Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Living Inca Town presents a rich case study of tourism in Ollantaytambo, a rapidly developing destination in the southern Peruvian Andes and the starting point for many popular treks to Machu Picchu. Tourism is generally welcomed in Ollantaytambo, as it provides a steady stream of work for local businesses, particularly those run by women. However, the obvious material inequalities between locals and tourists affect many interactions and have contributed to conflict and aggression throughout the tourist zones. Based on a number of research visits over the course of fifteen years, The Living Inca Town examines the experiences and interactions of locals, visitors, and tourism brokers. The book makes room for unique perspectives and uses innovative visual methods, including photovoice images and pen and ink drawings, to represent different viewpoints of day-to-day tourist encounters. The Living Inca Town vividly illustrates how tourism can perpetuate gendered and global inequalities, while also exploring new avenues to challenge and renegotiate these roles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traits that signal belonging dictate our daily routines, including how we eat, move, and connect to others. In recent years, "fat" has emerged as a shared anchor in defining who belongs and is valued versus who does not and is not. The stigma surrounding weight transcends many social, cultural, political, and economic divides. The concern over body image shapes not only how we see ourselves, but also how we talk, interact, and fit into our social networks, communities, and broader society. Fat in Four Cultures is a co-authored comparative ethnography that reveals the shared struggles and local distinctions of how people across the globe are coping with a bombardment of anti-fat messages. Highlighting important differences in how people experience "being fat," the cases in this book are based on fieldwork by five anthropologists working together simultaneously in four different sites across the globe: Japan, the United States, Paraguay, and Samoa. Through these cases, Fat in Four Cultures considers what insights can be gained through systematic, cross-cultural comparison. Written in an eye-opening and narrative-driven style, with clearly defined and consistently used key terms, this book effectively explores a series of fundamental questions about the present and future of fat and obesity.

Download or read book Under Pressure written by Lindsay A, Bell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2023-04-27 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, Canada became the third largest producer of diamonds in the world. Primarily mined on the edge of the Arctic, these diamonds are said to bring economic development and opportunity to nearby Indigenous communities. In Under Pressure, anthropologist Lindsay A. Bell examines the effects of diamond mining on an increasingly diverse northern population. Through an ethnographic focus on everyday life in Hay River, a multi-ethnic town in the Northwest Territories, this book illustrates the different ways Indigenous, settler, and immigrant northerners navigate the opportunities and obstacles created by large-scale resource development. By situating contemporary diamond mines within the long history of extraction in the region, Bell describes the social, cultural, and economic pressures that shape the people in this Northern community. In contrast to many polarizing accounts that deem mining as either good or bad, Under Pressure uses diamonds as an anthropological prism to consider larger issues related to Arctic extraction, globalization, Indigenous rights, and ethical consumption.

Book excerpt: The reconstruction of pre-Columbian cultures has been a persistent quest in the Americas. North Americans look to the western native Americans, while South Americans look to the Inca, as a symbol of cultural perseverance. The 2,000-year old Inca civilization is living vibrantly among us in villages in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina and is seen in colorful photographs and interpreted by distinguished South America ethnologists. Here are details of Incan rituals and traditions of everyday life practiced in communities that have maintained the creative energy of their ancestors in their craftsmanship, music, dance, festivities, and carnivals -- the assertion of an ancient cosmology in the 21st century.

Book Lost City of the Incas

Download or read book Lost City of the Incas written by Hiram Bingham and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in the 1950s, this is a classic account of the discovery in 1911 of the lost city of Machu Picchu. In 1911 Hiram Bingham, a pre-historian with a love of exotic destinations, set out to Peru in search of the legendary city of Vilcabamba, capital city of the last Inca ruler, Manco Inca. With a combination of doggedness and good fortune he stumbled on the perfectly preserved ruins of Machu Picchu perched on a cloud-capped ledge 2000 feet above the torrent of the Urubamba River. The buildings were of white granite, exquisitely carved blocks each higher than a man. Bingham had not, as it turned out, found Vilcabamba, but he had nevertheless made an astonishing and memorable discovery, which he describes in his bestselling book LOST CITY OF THE INCAS.

Book Re Centering Women in Tourism

Download or read book Re Centering Women in Tourism written by Frances Julia Riemer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-Centering Women in Tourism: Anti-Colonial Feminist Studies addresses tourism as simultaneously empowering women and reproducing colonial hierarchies. This volume contributes to conversations on the engagement of women in tourism by centering women’s multivalent lived experiences—as hosts, liaisons, vendors, performers, producers, and consumers—in tourism projects. Examining eco-tourism, craft production, and food tourism initiatives, the contributors embrace the building of new knowledge and advocate for change. By centering women and their experiences through epistemological lenses that encompass colonial histories and economics, this collection reframes the very presuppositions on which tourism initiatives are based and helps imagine sustainable and regenerative alternatives.
