Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes Methodist worship "Methodist" or "Wesleyan?" How do Methodists evaluate emerging forms of worship in light of their own liturgical heritage? This book considers these questions by bringing to light the work and significance of three Methodist liturgists who have until now received precious little scholarly focus: Thomas O. Summers (1812-1882), Nolan B. Harmon (1892-1993), and James F. White (1932-2004). Exploring each one’s contribution to the Methodist movement, it evaluates their continuing legacies as scholars and practitioners of Methodist worship. Importantly, the work of all these men occurred during times of cultural change, which gave rise to new ways of worship within the landscape of American Methodism. Addressing them in chronological order, this study shows how each figure enacted liturgical reform and renewal by drawing from the liturgical textual tradition inherited directly from John Wesley’s Sunday Service of the Methodist in North America as well as the hymnody of Charles Wesley. It also demonstrates how they sought to inculturate the Wesleyan liturgical tradition in the midst of these significant changes. Evaluating historic and emerging trends in Methodist liturgical praxis, this is a book that will be of great interest to scholars of Methodism, the History of Religion, Liturgical Studies and Theology.

What theological assumptions undergird the practice of Methodist worship in different cultural contexts? Is the liturgical heritage bequeathed by John Wesley and the early Methodists still honored in twentieth-century Methodist worship? How broadly has the twentieth-century liturgical movement influenced Methodist worship? Have Methodists made unique liturgical contributions in the establishment and evolution of "uniting" churches in Australia, Canada, or India? What are the implications of twentieth-century Methodist worship for evangelism and missions? These are some of the questions addressed in this volume, which examines the theological, historical, cultural, and practical implications of Sunday-morning worship as it is celebrated in churches around the world claiming Methodist/Wesleyan roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical course of Christianity in the twentieth century has been strongly marked by the Ecumenical Movement and the Liturgical Movement, and often these currents for the recovery of the Church's unity and the renewal of its worship have flowed together. In this new book, author Geoffrey Wainwright draws on his three decades of active participation in both movements to offer a theologically informed account of what has been at stake in them, what their achievements have been, and what tasks remain for them to accomplish. He shows how the two movements have engaged such issues as the authority and function of scripture and tradition as well as the nature of the Church and sacraments. In this last connection, Wainwright illuminates the convergence represented by the widely received Lima text on "Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry," in the writing of which he played a prominent part. The linguistic and anthropological turns that characterize twentieth-century thought are reflected in the attention given to the language and ritual of worship. The social location of the Church is addressed in chapters that look to liturgical practices for common Christian perspectives on ethics, politics, and culture, so that discords and conflicts may be resolved and reconciled. The book makes its own contribution to the symphony of praise to which the apostle Paul summons Christians and the churches when they will "with one mind and one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Book Unmasking Methodist Theology

Download or read book Unmasking Methodist Theology written by Clive Marsh and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. divBritish Methodism is reshaping itself. At a time of uncertainty about the future, owing to declining numbers and an ever-closer relationship with the Church of England, a collection of the liveliest theological minds in contemporary Methodism have written a book which shows how recent theology can be a resource for the future. Methodism has always had an active concern with both evangelism and social welfare and by means of its central organization it is able to coordinate efforts in these areas. The book asks challenging questions about how this may develop in the complex post-modern secular world.

Book The Organic Development of the Liturgy

Download or read book The Organic Development of the Liturgy written by Alcuin Reid and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has the Liturgy of the Roman rite developed and changed in history before and after the Council of Trent? What principles have determined the boundaries of legitimate liturgical reform over the centuries? What was the Liturgical Movement? Did Guéranger, Beauduin, Guardini, Parsch, Casel, Bugnini, Jungmann, Bouyer and the Movement's other leaders know and respect these principles? And what is to be said of the not insignificant liturgical reforms carried out by Saint Pius X, Popes Pius IX and Pius XII and Blessed John XXIII in the course of the twentieth century? In The Organic Development of the Liturgy, Dom Alcuin Reid examines these questions systematically, incisively and in depth, identifying both the content and context of the principle of "organic development"-a fundamental principle of liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium-making a significant contribution to the understanding of the nature of the Liturgical Movement and to the ongoing re-assessment of the reforms enacted following the Council.

Book The Liturgical Movement

Download or read book The Liturgical Movement written by Communauté de Saint-Séverin and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tells the story of the Liturgical Movement, tracing the reasons for its rise and growth, and providing a clear picture of the important figures and events behind this important revival. Stressing the monastic influence of the mid-nineteenth century, the study begins with a short but complete history of the movement. Attention is given to all the important figures of each nation who sparked revision of the liturgy. The writers then go on to show the development and fundamental ideas of the current revival. The liturgy, along with the Bible, is discussed in connection with the Christian ecumenical movement; and particular emphasis is placed on the "presentation of the Christian message" or catechesis. The main features of the liturgical movement and their application to daily Christian life are cogently discussed, using the liturgical teachings of Dom Odo Casel and the monastery of Maria Laach as a basis. The last part of this work is devoted to the principal advances made in this liturgical renewal in the twentieth century. Such aspects as the Divine Office, the liturgy and its relation to the Eucharist, the principal innovations and reforms in the Mass, and the sacramental requirements are described in detail. A full section is given to an up-to-date analysis of the liturgical constitution of the Second Vatican Council.

Book The Study of Liturgy

Download or read book The Study of Liturgy written by Cheslyn Jones and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Completely revised to incorporate new scholarship and many important developments in liturgical renewal, this standard text remains an essential tool for students of theology and liturgy. It treats the development of the liturgy historically, beginning with Jewish antecedents, then covering the New Testament, Patristic, Medieval, and Reformation periods, and concluding with the increasing interest in liturgy in all churches today. The text deals definitively with the five central rites of Christian worship: Initiation, the Eucharist, Ordination, the Daily Office, and the Calendar. A special section on liturgical settings examines in detail the historical importance of music and singing in the liturgy and the role of hymnody in Christian worship. Reflecting the continuing trend towards ecumenism, the editors represent the Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Protestant traditions, while the Orthodox tradition is represented by the team of contributors, which includes many of the best-known liturgical scholars."--
