Book Women Religion and the Gift

Download or read book Women Religion and the Gift written by Morny Joy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the special dynamics of women and their close relationships with the gift in both past and contemporary religious settings. Written from a cross-cultural perspective, it challenges depictions of women’s roles in religion where they have been relegated to compliance with specifically designated gendered attributes. The different chapters contest the resultant stereotypes that deny women agency. Each chapter describes women as engaged in an aspect of religion, from that of ritual specialists, to benefactors and patrons, or even innovators. The volume examines topics such as sainthood and sacrifice so as to refine these ideas in constructive ways that do not devalue women. It also examines the meaning of the term “gift” today, embracing the term in both figurative and literal ways. Such a collection of diverse women’s writings and activities provides a significant contribution to their quest for recognition, and also suggests ways this can be understood and realized today.

Book excerpt: In 2001, I was confronted with the most frightening challenge of my life, the diagnosis of a disease called scleroderma. I gradually learnt that this was no ordinary condition, as both my immune and vascular systems are compromised. The body is overproducing collagen throughout the bodys cells, tissues, organs, and systems, causing scarring or fibrosis. I felt strongly compelled to stay positive and explored many areas of help by seeking medical, holistic, and spiritual ways of healing. My book reveals the challenging and yet empowering journey I am living. Through a natural desire to express myself, I began writing my thoughts down daily and led to much insight and inspiration. My journal of poems, affirmations, and dedications brings to light a culmination of years of fear, bravery, pain, faith, desperation, and enlightenment. I sincerely hope this reaches the many thousands of people who are struggling just like me, dealing with their day-to-day tribulations of managing an autoimmune disease. I endeavour to deliver comfort and recognition by openly sharing my story and I wish with all my heart and soul that it helps people in some reassuring way or hopefully in a most miraculous way. This is my dream.

Book The Story of Mary MacKillop

Download or read book The Story of Mary MacKillop written by Bernadette Doyle and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's First Saint. Many words have already been written about Mary Mackillop and many more will follow. This text provides insight into the life and work of a woman whom so many Australians now recognize one of their own - an ‘Aussie Battler' in the richest sense of the term. In the face of poverty, hardship, misunderstanding and powerful opposition, she remained faithful to her vision and to her calling to serve people. The Story of Mary MacKillop will appeal to young people, providing them with sufficient background for appreciating the life and contribution of one woman to her family, her church and her nation. Mary can be viewed as a pioneer woman, an educationalist, a feminist, a political realist, a champion of the underprivileged. The list of her attributes, like her contribution to the rights of marginalized Australians is a lengthy one. Each one of us has a genuine need for authentic role models to encourage us and inspire us. In Mary MacKillop, we are presented with a very ordinary Australian woman whose story is a touchstone for so many of this country and therein lies both her accessibility and her appeal, Immigrant parents, difficult family circumstances, financial hardships, hopes put on hold --- these are some of the aspects of her life that we recognize - if not in ourselves then in the lives of others we know.

Book excerpt: Never See a Need is an account of the lives and works of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in South Australia from the time of their foundation in 1866 until Mary MacKillop's canonisation in 2010. Much happened during those 144 years. There were dark times and bright times, times of growth and expansion interspersed with times of decline, times of stability and times of change, and through it all, the members of the Congregation never forgot their call to do what they could to remedy the evils and ills of their society. They were educators, but they also looked out for the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged in different ways as they moved across the landscape to wherever they were needed, always a "people on the move" but always stable in their devotion to their ministry.

Book excerpt: In July 1872 three Sisters of St Joseph and one lay woman arrived at The Vale, a village near Bathurst, New South Wales. They had come from Adelaide in response to an invitation from the Catholic bishop of Bathurst to establish a foundation of the newly founded Congregation in his diocese--the first Josephite foundation in New South Wales. Sister Teresa McDonald was the leader or Superior of the founding community. Born in Scotland in 1838, she had come to Australia with her parents finally settling in Adelaide. A friend of both Father Julian Tenison Woods and Mother Mary MacKillop, she joined the Sisters of St Joseph in 1867. This book explores her early life and her time as a Sister of St Joseph in Adelaide where she served as the first Provincial of the Congregation in South Australia. It also gives particular attention to Teresa's short years at The Vale, her struggle with ill health and her death in January 1876.
