Book The Irish Whales

Download or read book The Irish Whales written by Kevin Martin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1900s, the Olympic Games track and field throwing events were dominated by a group of Irish-born weight throwers representing the United States. Of immense size and with a larger-than-life presence, these athletes came to be known as the “Irish Whales.” In The Irish Whales: Olympians of Old New York, Kevin Martin shares the untold story of these Irish American athletes who competed with unparalleled distinction for the United States. James Mitchell, John Flanagan, Martin Sheridan, Pat McDonald, Paddy Ryan, and Con Walsh won a total of eighteen medals in the Olympic Games between 1900 and 1924 and completely dominated the world stage in their chosen athletic disciplines. They were lionized in the American and Irish press and became folk heroes among Irish-American immigrant communities. Almost all of these men were further distinguished by their membership in the fabled Irish American Athletic Club of New York and careers with the New York Police Department. The story of the Irish Whales is the very embodiment of the American Dream and exemplifies the triumph of many Irish emigrants in the New World. Featuring a wonderful collection of original photographs, The Irish Whales tells the dramatic stories of these international athletes and their extraordinary sporting successes.

Download or read book The Logic of Charity written by Marco H.D. Van Leeuwen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-04-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyses poor relief in preindustrial Europe from 1800 to 1850, as a survival strategy of the poor and as a control strategy of the elites. It deals with poverty and the problems of the poor, but also with wealth and the concerns of the elites and of the middle classes. A simple model of poor relief is presented, based on insights derived from history, sociology and welfare economics. It is tested against the historical records of Amsterdam from 1800 to 1850. The study brings out some of the perennial problems of social policy, past and present, as well as some aspects of Old Regime charity, now vanished.

Book Insider Baseball

Download or read book Insider Baseball written by Joan Didion and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Vintage Shorts Selection • Almost three decades ago, iconic and incomparable American essayist Joan Didion’s now-classic report from the Dukakis campaign trail exposed, in no uncertain terms, the complete sham that is the modern American presidential run. Writing with bite and some humor too, Didion betrays “the process”—the way in which power is exchanged and the status quo is maintained. All insiders—politicians, journalists, spin doctors—participate in a political narrative that is “designed as it is to maintain the illusion of consensus by obscuring rather than addressing actual issues.” The optics of presidential campaigns have grown ever more farcical and remote from the needs and issues most relevant to Americans’ lives, and Didion’s elegant, shrewd, and prescient commentary has never been more urgent than it is right now. An ebook short.

Book The Game Is Not Won Until It Is Lost

Download or read book The Game Is Not Won Until It Is Lost written by Quote Banana and published by . This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a well-established fact that if a footballer opens his mouth, the chances of him saying something stupid are remarkably high, and yet, when these overpaid morons hang up their boots, the least articulate among them are often recruited as pundits by TV and radio broadcasters, presumably because they believe that listening to the inane ramblings of a barely literate clown for 90 minutes will enhance our enjoyment of the game. This little book brings together quotes from all your least favourite modern-day commentators, players and pundits, including tedious cretins such as Mark Lawrenson, Garth Crooks, Michael Owen, Alan Smith, Mark Bright, Jamie Redknapp, Rio Ferdinand, Andy Townsend and Alan Shearer, not to mention old-school buffoons like Ron Atkinson, David Pleat and Glenn Hoddle.

Book Masculinity and Power in Irish Nationalism 1884 1938

Download or read book Masculinity and Power in Irish Nationalism 1884 1938 written by Aidan Beatty and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comparative study of masculinity and white racial identity in Irish nationalism and Zionism. It analyses how both national movements sought to refute widespread anti-Irish or anti-Jewish stereotypes and create more prideful (and highly gendered) images of their respective nations. Drawing on English-, Irish-, and Hebrew-language archival sources, Aidan Beatty traces how male Irish nationalists sought to remake themselves as a proudly Gaelic-speaking race, rooted both in their national past as well as in the spaces and agricultural soil of Ireland. On the one hand, this was an attempt to refute contemporary British colonial notions that they were somehow a racially inferior or uncomfortably hybridised people. But this is also presented in the light of the general history of European nationalism; nationalist movements across Europe often crafted romanticised images of the nation’s past and Irish nationalism was thus simultaneously European and postcolonial. It is this that makes Irish nationalism similar to Zionism, a movement that sought to create a more idealized image of the Jewish past that would disprove contemporary anti-Semitic stereotypes.
