Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Persia Now it is, I think, always desirable in the first instance to get a clear idea of the ground covered by a subject of which one proposes to treat. Modern, post-muhammadan, Persian literature - a literature covering a period Of about a thousand years - is what I propose to discuss this afternoon but I must Observe in passing that a comprehensive survey of the literature or literatures of Persia would include more than this. There are three older pre-muhammadan literatures well worthy of. Study which belong to Persia; and, though I shall not have time to discuss them to - day, I must at least mention them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious Poetry of Persia The fascinating field of Avestan literature has been strangely neglected in our country. I have tried in a modest way to open it up for students of poetry and students of religion, who will I trust at least recognise from these pages that the subject is worth pursuing further. The little book ventures on ground which is full of pitfalls for investigators who are not able to give undivided attention. I have therefore appreciated very specially the help of two old friends who have looked over my proofs - the Editor, with whom I read the Gathas under Cowell long ago, and (for the first half of the book) Prof. Williams Jackson, whose paramount authority in Iranian subjects every expert knows. To them and to other scholars named in the book itself I offer very warm thanks, only asking the reader not to hold them responsible when I have dared to be original - and very likely wrong. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sacred Books and Early Literature of the East, Vol. 7: Ancient Persia IN this volume we turn from the great books of the Semitic races to trace the earliest literature and the expanding thought of the Aryan peoples, the ancestors of the Europeans of to-day. The Aryans first stepped forth as political leaders of the world in the year 539 when, as noted in our earliest volume, Cyrus, the great Persian conqueror, seized posses sion of Babylon. Ancient Babylon had been for thousands of years the center of Semitic thought and culture and power. Since then, for other thousands of years, the Aryan peoples, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and modern Europeans, have held control of the earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rose Garden of Persia To the Orientalist is known the extreme dith culty of conveying in any European tongue the exact meaning of the poet: the Germans have perhaps succeeded best in consequence of the con struction of their language; but mere words alone in Persian sometimes express so much that the translator finds all his efforts unavailing to render them of the same force. For instance, the Per sians have words and names which at one view exhibit many qualities without more explanation, and which throw a charm over their songs, impos sible to reach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King and Cobbler: A Romance of Ancient Persia Among all the cities of old, the ruins of which are now left to tell of the mighty age that has long since passed away, none exceeded in extent, in wealth, or in grandeur, Persepolis, the chief capital of ancient Persia. At the foot of a steep, rugged mountain, was extended a wide plain, watered by a goodly river. Upon all hands this plain was shut in by high cliffs of rock, looming darkly in the distance, leaving the level space some five-and-twenty miles in length, and upon this was the city built, occupying the whole vast area. The wealth of the royal palace almost exceeds belief. It was a vast structure, serving not only for the royal residence, but also for a citadel and bulwark. Its colonnade of massive pillars still stands, and is a fit object of wonder. These pillars are of gray marble and seventy feet high, and their capitals, which are of an order of architecture differing from any other then in use, are beautiful in the extreme. The interior of this kingly abode was literally cased with gold and precious stones, and to count or estimate the wealth there displayed, were a task beyond the ability of one man. And then other evidences of grandeur were built in the city, and upon all hands were to be seen sculptures and towers, and courts and monuments. And as though the vast plain gave not room enough for the ingenuity of the sculptors, the faces of the very rocks that formed the cliff wall of the city were cut and carved in a most elaborate and finished manner. Into the facts of the larger rocks were cut tombs and sepulchral chambers, with beautiful porticos richly sculptured from the solid cliff. Truly the king of Persia had wealth, for his capital contained within itself the wealth of a nation. And he had power, for thousands on thousands bowed down to do him homage, and princes and potentates acknowledged his authority. Next in importance among the palaces of Persepolis to that of the king was the palace of Rustem, one of the most powerful satraps, or governors, of the realm. Rustem was now past the meridian of life, but still strong and vigorous, and fond of all those manly sports which were the delight of the warrior race of that period. He was a favorite of the king, a friend to those who bowed to him, and sometimes generous and benevolent to the poor. He could be warm and ardent in his attachments, and he could love with his whole heart; but there was no principle, no moral obligation, felt by him. He was the slave of impulse, and the owner of a will that would not bend. Very slight causes would attract his friendship, and causes just as slight would arouse his anger and hate. Above all things else did he love to be honored and obeyed and flattered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persian Literature After a nine months' voyage he arrived at Pondicherry, whence he proceeded to Surat, the chief seat of the fire-worshippers, or Parsees. On arriving there, he proceeded with the greatest diligence to inquire after the ancient Zend works. By his connection with the French factory, then established at Surat, he was able, after much diffi culty and a liberal expenditure of money, to prevail upon two learned Parsee priests, acquainted with Zend and Pehlevi, to teach him those languages, which no European had ever learnt before him. He returned to Europe in 1761, with a hundred and eighty manuscripts, and in 1771 published his work called zend-avesta in three volumes.
