Book excerpt: “It’s not what you get in life, it’s what you give back that truly defines you.” Set in Iran during the 1960s and 1970s, and later in Los Angeles, California, Zhila Shirazi tells her story firsthand. She reveals the real-life struggle of being a deaf woman who refuses to allow adversity to stop her from reaching her dreams of living a normal and fulfilling life. In 1985, disgusted with the treatment of Jews by the new Islamic government, Zhila immigrates to the United States in pursuit of better circumstances and a chance to receive a cochlear implant to improve her hearing. However, it isn’t until she is forty-nine, when she meets her soulmate, Mickey Daniels, that she begins to feel her life truly complete. A decade later, after they have fallen deeply in love, Zhila learns that she is suffering from an aggressive form of cancer. In the months that follow, Mickey becomes Zhila’s primary caretaker, and the two grow ever closer as they fight the disease together. Right up to the end, Zhila shows her caring nature, innate intelligence, and will power to overcome almost any challenge. Her courage and the beauty of her memory is certain to inspire all who venture to follow her on their quest for a truly meaningful life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry. George. Elaine. Kramer. We've followed their misadventures for nearly ten years on Thursday nights. Here, finally, are the scripts of the first two seasons that will take you back to the beginning of Seinfeld. Featuring the first 17 episodes ever aired, The Seinfeld Scripts contains all the great lines that have kept us laughing for years: the pilot episode, "The Seinfeld Chronicles," where it all began; George introduces his importer/exporter altar ego Art Vanderlay in "The Stakeout"; Kramer becomes obsessed with cantaloupe in "The Ex-Girlfriend"; Jerry and George meet Elaine's dad in "The Jacket"; is Jerry responsible for a poor Polish woman's death when he makes "The Pony Remark"?; Jerry and Elaine decide to become intimate again in "The Deal"; what will George do when he is banned from the executive bathroom in "The Revenge"?; and Jerry, George, and Elaine wait for a table in "The Chinese Restaurant." It's all here: the award-winning writing of Seinfeld, "the defining sitcom of our age". Created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld. Elaine: My roommate has Lyme disease. Jerry: Lyme disease? I thought she had Epstein-Barr syndrome? Elaine: She has this in addition to Epstein-Barr. It's like Epstein-Barr with a twist of Lyme disease. George: She calls me up at my office she says, "We have to talk." Jerry: The four worst words in the English language. Kramer: What a body. Yeeaaah...that's for me. Jerry: Yeah and you're just what she's looking for, too--a stranger, leering through a pair of binoculars ten floors up.

Book excerpt: "Education was established to create employees for 19th and 20th century manufacturing models. The 21st century requires a rethink. Change is happening fast, with jobs not guaranteed as robots are taking over routines. We must prepare students for uncertainty & higher-level employment - helping them think and communicate instead of retain and recall facts for passing exams. Some curricula is either irrelevant for today or gained at the press of a button. Listening and literate talk (narratives) for collaboratively solving real problems should be the focus, not facts forgotten after tests. The book explores this important debate. Contributors are: Daryle Abrahams, Nigel Adams, Peter Chatterton, Stefano Cobello, Joanna Ebner, Pierre Frath, Irene Glendinning, Susan James, Riccarda Matteucci, Gloria McGregor, Elena Milli, Elizabeth Negus, Juan Eduardo Romero, Rosemary Sage and Emma Webster"--

Book The Silent Cry

    Book Details:

  • ISBN : 141078102X
  • Pages : 349 pages

Download or read book The Silent Cry written by Margaret A. Pitts and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret gives searing and compelling insights into the isolated world of one deaf child who grew up in an era uneducated about deafness. The results were the very tragic consequences that shaped her life. The Silent Cry is a shocking story of molestation and abandonment, neglect and a multitude of falsely diagnosed mental illnesses. As a child, Margaret could not hear and her speech was unintelligible. These problems made it impossible for her to communicate with those around her. She then attended a school for the deaf and learned her primary language-American Sign Language, thus enabling her to communicate with peers and teachers. Her family was not willing to learn American Sign Language and this further compounded her awareness of isolation in a hearing world. She much later learned English, however, it is not her primary language as many like to believe. Because of her Deaf boyfriend?s suicide attempt, she was suddenly compelled to leave Delavan, Wisconsin School for the Deaf. The school has served deaf and hard of hearing students in the state of Wisconsin since 1852. WSD has an average annual enrollment of 180 students in grades pre-K through 12th. WSD stresses quality of service to students and parents. We focus on meeting the needs of students with disabilities in the areas of academic, adaptive education, vocational and social skills development. When she was pushed into a hearing world without verbal or writing communication skills at the age of eighteen, she was not able to blend in. Finally, she determined that she was abandoned on the streets where she was preyed upon by pimps who force her into prostitution. This is a chilling account of the exploitation of a person with a disability, but it is also a story of remarkable courage and triumph of the human spirit. A Truly amazing transformation! The work ends with the author's nervous and joyful reunion with self-awareness and self-confidence. It is also a beautiful love story involving many cultures. The main cultures consist of two different languages, two difference races, and the bridges built between them making this story unique.
