Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massive blackhole (MBH) growth is now recognized as a critical ingredient of galaxy formation and evolution. To investigate the interplay between MBH growth and galaxy evolution, we have used the capabilities of the Spitzer Space Telescope to study active galactic nuclei (AGN) and luminous infrared galaxies. We have tested the unification model for radio-loud AGN by finding that radio quasars and some FRII radio galaxies follow a correlation between low-frequency radio and the 70 um emission, two presumably isotropic indicators of nuclear radiation. We have found that mid-IR obscuration (characterized by the strength of the silicate feature) correlates with the X-ray obscuration (characterized by the HI column density), such that low HI columns correspond to silicate emission while high columns correspond to silicate absorption, for various types of AGN. We have demonstrated that in situ electron acceleration is required for both jet and lobe emission in M87. We have measured aromatic features in local AGN, demonstrated the diverse nature (star formation vs. AGN) of the far-IR emission mechanism, and constructed the star formation luminosity functions of the AGN hosts. These luminosity functions are flatter than that of field galaxies, implying that the interplay between star formation and nuclear activity enhances both processes. For luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), we have characterized galaxy morphologies of a complete sample of LIRGs at z1̃ and found that LIRGs at z1̃ are as asymmetric as local ones, implying similar conditions within galaxies lead to a LIRG level of star formation.

Book excerpt: In my PHD work I explored the links between the physical properties of interstellar dust and other components of nearby spiral galaxies especially their stellar content. I worked on 46 disk galaxies from KINGFISH with IRAC/MIPS/PACS/SPIRE maps (3.6 - 500 microns). A bias is usually introduced in estimating disk orientations by using only a single surface brightness isophote. Thus I devised different surface brightness levels separated by constant steps in surface brightness and extracted isophotes at these levels in all FIR maps as well as in all IRAC 4.5 microns maps. To further assess the coherence of the shapes of isophotes across galactic disks, I built a quantitative indicator of the difference in shape between two ellipses with same center and same semi-major axis.I defined an acceptable level of difference between isophote shapes, by comparing disk orientations found in litterature. Using this level, I found regions inside the galactic disks where the isophotal shapes are similar. From these, I extracted one disk orientation per wavelength band. I found in the vast majority of the disk galaxy maps, be it dominated by stellar or dust emission, that a large fraction of the isophotes I extracted are coherent with the idea of an underlying disk. Comparing, for each galaxy, disk orientations extracted at all wavelengths, I found evidence in 20 galaxies out of 46, that on radial ranges as large as 1/3 of the visible disk (as measured by R25), the shapes of isophotes are morphologically similar. Thus for these 20 galaxies I devised consistent disk orientations both for the stellar and dust content. These 20 galaxies are less luminous, less emitting in the IR w.r.t. the optical, less barred, and characterized by later stage types than average. I also found that the disk orientations devised by my photometric method yield results more similar to H-alpha kinematic orientations than other photometric studies based on a single isophote level.Using the orientations I found and H-alpha dynamics disk orientations, I averaged azimuthally surface brightnesses to produce radial spectral energy distributions (SED) profiles. Once fitted with a cosmic dust emission model, they resulted in radial profiles of dust and stellar content properties. I found the dust intercepted power to be proportionnal to the product of the total dust mass and the average ISRF shining on dust. This former quantity is better correlated with the bolometric stellar luminosity than any of the dust mass or the dust heating ISRF separately. Thus the old stellar populations may be an important heating source for dust. The power intercepted by dust is also very well correlated with the total infrared power. The dust intercepts a larger quantity of power coming from stars in more actively star forming galaxies.Dust exhibit radial mass surface density profiles less well described by Sersic functions than stellar ones. When both profiles are well fitted by Sersic functions, stellar density profiles have smaller half mass radii than the isophotal optical radius (R25) separately in later type galaxies, but also in more quiescent galaxies. Sersic index and half mass radius distributions have larger widths for dust than for stellar surface density profiles.I also found that the ratio of dust over stellar surface density is an important factor to explain the variations with galactic morphological type of the ratio of dust intercepted power over the power emitted by old stellar populations. This later link could be intertwined with spiral structure strength in stage types later than 2.

Infrared (IR) luminous galaxies, which are massive and heavily dust obscured (LIR > 1011 Lsun), dominate the stellar growth during this era, and many are harboring a hidden active galactic nucleus (AGN). We have quantified the contribution of AGN heating to the infrared emission of a large sample of dusty, luminous galaxies from z=0.5-4 using Spitzer mid-IR spectroscopy, available for every source. We classify sources as star forming galaxies, AGN, or composites based on the presence of mid-IR continuum emission due to a dusty torus. 60% of our sample shows signs of some dust heating emanating from an AGN, and that an AGN is clearly linked with increasing dust temperatures. We quantify the far-IR emission using deep Herschel imaging and find that the strength of mid-IR AGN emission is tightly correlated with the total contribution of an AGN to LIR, which has important consequences for calculating star formation rates in dusty high redshift galaxies. We calibrate techniques to remove the contribution of AGN to LIR. Because of dust obscuration, much of this AGN activity is undetected at other wavelengths, but we present new color diagnostics to effectively identify heavily obscured AGN. We discuss the role that mergers might play in fueling AGN growth and find our galaxies to be generally consistent with the picture that a major merger triggers an AGN. Book excerpt: Hierarchical models and observations show that galaxy mergers and interactions play a key role in galaxy assembly and star formation, but to what extent is still unclear. This thesis attempts to quantify their contribution to galaxy evolution by probing the number of interactions and mergers, along with their star forming properties as a function of redshift. The presence of long tidal tails and bridges are robust signatures of recent merger activity. This completely dynamical phenomenon was used to develop a new classification scheme to identify interacting galaxies and probe the interaction fraction and merger rate. We applied this new technique to large area, multi-band imaging obtained via the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS-Deep), yielding the first statistically secure, lower limit of the galaxy interaction fraction between 0.1 z 1.0. Optically, the fraction of galaxies undergoing an interaction evolves moderately with redshift as (1 + z)2.24+/-0.24The Spitzer 24mum coverage of both the Extragalactic First Look Survey (XFLS) and CFHTLSDeep Survey were used to carry out one of the first and largest merger studies of IR bright galaxies. Within the ACS component of the XFLS, interactions were identified over the full merger sequence using traditional techniques, finding a merger rate increase for 24microm galaxies of (1 + z) & sim;2. This result implies that merging is an increasingly important process in the evolution of luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs), contributing 40--60% of the IR luminosity density and at least 30--40% of the star formation rate density at z & sim; 1. Galaxy interactions at all stages are found to have elevated star formation rates greater than a factor of two-four (on average) and a higher incidence of AGN activity compared to non-interacting field galaxies. This result supports a causal connection between galaxy merging, induced star formation, and AGN activity. Ultimately, major mergers provide a moderate contribution to the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate density and IR luminosity density to z & sim; 1, with an increasing trend suggesting that merging plays a larger role at higher redshifts (z 1). It is also clear that merging plays a significant role in triggering the processes that power the IR emission of LIRG galaxies at z 0.5.
