Book The Linear Polarization of Radio Sources Between 11 and 20 Cm Wavelength Iii Influence of the Galaxy on Source Depolarization and Faraday Rotation

Download or read book The Linear Polarization of Radio Sources Between 11 and 20 Cm Wavelength Iii Influence of the Galaxy on Source Depolarization and Faraday Rotation written by F. F. Gardner and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dependence on galactic latitude of the 11 and 20 cm polarization of 355 extragalactic sources reveals no definite evidence of depolarization within the Galaxy. The distribution of Faraday rotation can be explained in terms of a field along the local spiral arm, deformed by magnetic 'loops' in the solar neighbourhood. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetism, when extended beyond normal frameworks into cosmic space is characterized by an enormous spatial scale. Because of their large sizes the nature of magnets such as the Earth and the Sun is entirely different from the nature of a horseshoe magnet. The source of cosmic magnetism is associated with the hydrodynamic motions of a highly conductive medium. In this aspect, cosmic magnets resemble a dynamo. However, currents in the dynamo flow along properly ordered wires, while chaotic, turbulent motions are dominant inside stars and liquid planetary cores. This makes more intriguing and surprising the fact that these motions maintain a regular magnetic field. Maintenance of magnetic fields is even more impressive in huge magnets, i.e. galaxies. In fact, we are living inside a giant dynamo machine, the Milky Way galaxy. Although the idea of the global magnetic field of our Galaxy was clearly proposed almost 40 years ago, firm observational evidence and definite theoretical concepts of galactic magnetism have been developed only in the last decade. This book is the first attempt at a full and consistent presentation of this problem. We discuss both theoretical views on the origin of galactic magnetism and the methods of observational study. Previous discussions were on the level of review articles or separate chapters in monographs devoted to cosmic magnetic fields (see, e.g., H. K. Moffatt, 1978, E. N. Parker, 1979 and Zeldovich et aI., 1983).

Download or read book Radio Galaxies written by A. G. Pacholczyk and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio Galaxies: Radiation Transfer, Dynamics, Stability and Evolution of a Synchrotron Plasmon deals with the physics of a region in space containing magnetic field and thermal and relativistic particles (a plasmon). The synchrotron emission and absorption of this region are discussed, along with the properties of its spectrum; its linear and circular polarization; transfer of radiation through such a region; its dynamics and expansion; and interaction with external medium. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume explores the stability, turbulence, and acceleration of particles in a synchrotron plasmon as well as its application to the physics of radio galaxies. The discussion begins with a description of extragalactic radio sources and their properties, followed by an analysis of the emission and absorption of synchrotron radiation. Subsequent chapters focus on the transfer of polarized radiation in a magnetoactive plasma; hydromagnetics and hydromagnetic stability; confinement and structure of extended radio sources; and radio-tail galaxies. The book also considers compact radio sources before concluding with an evaluation of radio source theories. This monograph is addressed primarily to radio astronomers and graduate students working on the interpretation of observational data.

Book Planets Stars and Nebulae Studied with Photopolarimetry

Download or read book Planets Stars and Nebulae Studied with Photopolarimetry written by Tom Gehrels and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 1152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The polarization study of celestial objects is a valuable part of optical astronomy, and the author has done exceptionally well in bringing together contributions treating all aspects of the polarimetry field. . . . The first section contains a fine introduction and an excellent and definitive history of the subject. . . . The volume is well illustrated. . . . Highly recommended.”—Choice “The high quality of this book is clearly due to strict editorial attention to each paper and the discussions. Gehrels’s book will surely stand for many years as the fundamental reference source for polarization studies in astronomy as well as in atmospheric physics.”—Journal of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers

Book Cosmic Magnetism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Percy Seymour
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 1986
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Cosmic Magnetism written by Percy Seymour and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of extraterrestrial magnetic fields is a relatively new one, confirmation of the existance of the first such field (that of our Sun) having come a s late as 1908. In the past 30 years a great ammount of knowledge has been accumulated on Cosmic Magnetism, which has turned out to be a truly fascinating topic for study. Percy Seymour's book is the first to deal with the topic in a non-mathematical way, and he offers a fine introduction to his subject. The first three chapters consolidate our knowledge on magnetism in general and the magnetic field of the Earth, as well as discussing the reasons for studying astronomy and cosmic magnetism in particular. The remainder of the book is devoted to the main areas of cosmic magnetism - solar, plantetary and interplanetary fields, fields in stars and pulsars, fields of the milky way and fields in other galaxies. Cosmic Magnetism in an ideal book for sixth-formers and undergraduates studying physics or astronomy and will also appeal to amateur astronomers. as previous work on this topic has been 'hidden' in specialised academic journals.
