Book excerpt: The current study followed the methodology used by Erchul and colleagues (eg., Erchul, Raven, & Ray, 2001, Getty & Erchul, 2008) to assess and compare the likelihood of use of social power bases reported by school psychologists and school counselors. Furthermore, because the Interpersonal Power Inventory (consultant usage form; IPI-Form CT-U) was used for the first time with the school counselors, the factor structure of the instrument was also examined using Principal Component Analysis. 2 components, harsh and soft power, were identified which were similar to the harsh and soft power sources identified in the previous studies using IPI. Similar to previous research with school psychologists, the results of the current study also demonstrated that IPI-Form CT-U is an internally consistent measure that can be used to assess the likelihood of use of soft and harsh power bases in school counselors. The current study emphasized the similarities and underscored the differences between the likelihood of use of social power bases among school counselors and school psychologists. Overall, both school psychologists and school counselors rated soft power bases higher than harsh power bases. Informational power, expert power, and legitimate power of dependence were the three highest rated power bases by school psychologists and school counselors. In comparison to school psychologists, school counselors reported a higher likelihood of using soft power when consulting with a teacher. A comparison between the individual social power ratings by school psychologists and counselors revealed that school counselors rated expert power, legitimate power of dependence, and impersonal coercion higher in terms of their likelihood of use, as compared to the school psychologists. The differences in the ratings by school counselors and school psychologists may be explained in the light of the differences in their training, the nature of their role and their placement in school settings.

Book excerpt: In the two studies comprising this dissertation research, the French and Raven (1959) and Raven (1965, 1992, 1993) social power rubric was applied to study school psychological consultation. The first study addressed how likely consultants would be to use the social power bases, while the second study addressed the acceptability of a subset of these social power bases. In each study, 1,000 Nationally Certified School Psychologists (NCSPs) were mailed corresponding forms of a modified Interpersonal Power Inventory (IPI) In Study 1, the IPI was modified to measure the likelihood of use in a psychological consultant/teacher dyad, and in Study 2, the IPI was modified to measure the acceptability of the power bases in a psychological consultant/teacher dyad. Results from Study 1 indicated that Raven's (1992) social power bases can be divided into soft and harsh categories. Results further indicated that psychologists are more likely to use soft power bases than harsh power bases. In Study 2, the acceptability of the following six social power bases was addressed: direct informational, positive expert, positive referent, personal reward, legitimate position, and legitimate dependence power. Results indicated that psychological consultants view these power bases as differentially acceptable. Psychologists rated positive referent power as more acceptable than legitimate dependence, legitimate position, positive expert, and direct informational power. Psychologists also rated direct information as more acceptable than legitimate dependence, legitimate position, and positive expert power. Finally, psychologists rated legitimate dependence power as more acceptable than positive expert and personal reward power. Taken in their entirety, these dissertation studies reinforce the relevance and applicability of social power to the study of psychological consultation. Consultants are not only more likely to use soft power bases, but also report they find positive referent and direct.

Book excerpt: The social power typology originally identified by French and Raven (1959) and later modified by Raven (1965, 1992) was used to examine factors related to school psychological consultation. Specifically, this dissertation investigated whether the gender and amount of relevant professional experience of psychologists (i.e., consultants) and teachers (i.e., consultees) influenced how likely psychologists were to use soft power bases when consulting with teachers. In addition, this study examined whether consultants' use of soft power bases was related to their self-evaluations of effectiveness during consultation. Two instruments were employed: the Interpersonal Power Inventory (IPI), which was modified to examine school consultants' likelihood of use of social power bases when consulting with teachers; and the Consultant Evaluation Form (CEF), which was modified to assess psychologists' self-evaluations of effectiveness during teacher consultation. The IPI and CEF were mailed together to 1,000 Nationally Certified School Psychologists, and a total of 352 usable protocols were returned. Results indicated that when consulting with female teachers, female consultants were not more likely to use positive referent power than the other four soft power bases combined; however, male psychologists were more likely to use positive expert power than the other four soft power bases combined. Additional results indicated that consultants' likelihood of use of soft power bases was not related to their years of professional experience, although results of a secondary set of analyses using a slightly different constellation of soft power bases did yield a significant relationship between the two variables. Findings also revealed a significant relationship between consultees' years of experience and consultants' use of soft power bases, in that school consultants were less likely to use soft power with more experienced teachers.
