Book Unconscious yet Awake to the Light

Download or read book Unconscious yet Awake to the Light written by N. Gamil Dawes and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people who heard of my story referred to it as near-death experience. However there was no out-of-body perception involved. I was just somewhere, but not in this world. Its like being all eyes and heart for I saw, and felt, but did not exist - bodily! For some who might have similar experiences, this might be a time of sharing a story. Mysterious. Mystical. Yet, very hopeful! While trying to understand what happened, I studied the supernatural experiences of Saints, and others. It was quite an eye-opener for a regular Catholic who is suddenly faced with a new, life-changing outlook. Life became more challenging, but also spiritually rewarding.

  • Author : Hans Lambers
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2006-03-30

Download or read book Plant Respiration written by Hans Lambers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respiration in plants, as in all living organisms, is essential to provide metabolic energy and carbon skeletons for growth and maintenance. As such, respiration is an essential component of a plant’s carbon budget. Depending on species and environmental conditions, it consumes 25-75% of all the carbohydrates produced in photosynthesis – even more at extremely slow growth rates. Respiration in plants can also proceed in a manner that produces neither metabolic energy nor carbon skeletons, but heat. This type of respiration involves the cyanide-resistant, alternative oxidase; it is unique to plants, and resides in the mitochondria. The activity of this alternative pathway can be measured based on a difference in fractionation of oxygen isotopes between the cytochrome and the alternative oxidase. Heat production is important in some flowers to attract pollinators; however, the alternative oxidase also plays a major role in leaves and roots of most plants. A common thread throughout this volume is to link respiration, including alternative oxidase activity, to plant functioning in different environments.

Book The Sacred Home in Renaissance Italy

Download or read book The Sacred Home in Renaissance Italy written by Abigail Brundin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacred Home in Renaissance Italy explores the rich devotional life of the Italian household between 1450 and 1600. Rejecting the enduring stereotype of the Renaissance as a secular age, this interdisciplinary study reveals the home to have been an important site of spiritual revitalization. Books, buildings, objects, spaces, images, and archival sources are scrutinized to cast new light on the many ways in which religion infused daily life within the household. Acts of devotion, from routine prayers to extraordinary religious experiences such as miracles and visions, frequently took place at home amid the joys and trials of domestic life — from childbirth and marriage to sickness and death. Breaking free from the usual focus on Venice, Florence, and Rome, The Sacred Home investigates practices of piety across the Italian peninsula, with particular attention paid to the city of Naples, the Marche, and the Venetian mainland. It also looks beyond the elite to consider artisanal and lower-status households, and reveals gender and age as factors that powerfully conditioned religious experience. Recovering a host of lost voices and compelling narratives at the intersection between the divine and the everyday, The Sacred Home offers unprecedented glimpses through the keyhole into the spiritual lives of Renaissance Italians.

Book The Miraculous Flying House of Loreto

Download or read book The Miraculous Flying House of Loreto written by Karin Vélez and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1295, a house fell from the evening sky onto an Italian coastal road by the Adriatic Sea. Inside, awestruck locals encountered the Virgin Mary, who explained that this humble mud-brick structure was her original residence newly arrived from Nazareth. To keep it from the hands of Muslim invaders, angels had flown it to Loreto, stopping three times along the way. This story of the house of Loreto has been read as an allegory of how Catholicism spread peacefully around the world by dropping miraculously from the heavens. In this book, Karin Vélez calls that interpretation into question by examining historical accounts of the movement of the Holy House across the Mediterranean in the thirteenth century and the Atlantic in the seventeenth century. These records indicate vast and voluntary involvement in the project of formulating a branch of Catholic devotion. Vélez surveys the efforts of European Jesuits, Slavic migrants, and indigenous peoples in Baja California, Canada, and Peru. These individuals contributed to the expansion of Catholicism by acting as unofficial authors, inadvertent pilgrims, unlicensed architects, unacknowledged artists, and unsolicited cataloguers of Loreto. Their participation in portaging Mary’s house challenges traditional views of Christianity as a prepackaged European export, and instead suggests that Christianity is the cumulative product of thousands of self-appointed editors. Vélez also demonstrates how miracle narratives can be treated seriously as historical sources that preserve traces of real events. Drawing on rich archival materials, The Miraculous Flying House of Loreto illustrates how global Catholicism proliferated through independent initiatives of untrained laymen.

Book Journey to the Aisle

Download or read book Journey to the Aisle written by Carmen Trevio Moreno and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to the Aisle shares a life experience growing up in the barrio in south Texas where Spanish and Mexican cultural influences and traditions, being the norm, presented obstacles and conflicts while experiencing immersion into educational environments. Practicing Catholicism was the core of daily existence in the lives of families. Growing up in a family with ten siblings, the author shares stories about learning how to survive daily in a male-dominant Spanish speaking home environment where gender roles were defined through unwritten rules. Attending an Irish Catholic School in the barrio and ultimately a public school system led to a journey of reflective questioning of cultural expectations. She relates personal struggles and conflicts encountered as she journeys through the process of deciding to make a commitment to marrying.
