Book excerpt: The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman' is a unique and celebrated novel written by Laurence Sterne. Volume 2 continues the satirical journey of Tristram Shandy, a fictional character whose life and musings form the core of the narrative. In this volume, Sterne continues his unconventional approach to storytelling, using digressions, humorous anecdotes, and playful narrative techniques to explore various themes and ideas. Tristram reflects on his own conception and birth, delves into his family history, and shares his opinions on various topics, ranging from philosophy to politics. The book's fragmented structure, with its numerous diversions and interruptions, mirrors the chaotic nature of life itself. Book The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy Gentleman

Download or read book The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy Gentleman written by Laurence Sterne and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Johnson and Samuel Richardson condemned it. James Boswell and Goethe proclaimed it a masterpiece. And from the beginning Sterne realized he had written a book that would not suit everyone's taste. For more than two centuries. Tristram Shandy (1759-67) has astounded - and by turns confounded, captivated, angered, and amused but ever entertained - readers worldwide. While on the surface a comic, disjointed account of the title character's life and times, the work is in fact a brilliant commentary on life's inherent chaos, the pointed challenge of British clergy-man-turned-author Laurence Sterne to the twin concepts of rationalism and sentimentalism. Delineating his views through skillfully drawn representations - among them Tristram, Yorick, and Uncle Toby - Sterne pinpointed issues central to not only his era but our own. Filled with thought-provoking ideas and marked by an open, conversational writing style, Tristram Shandy: A Book for Free Spirits is an adroit guide to understanding the aims and achievements of Sterne's masterpiece and to fully appreciating its lessons for contemporary times.

Book Historicizing the Enlightenment Volume 2

Download or read book Historicizing the Enlightenment Volume 2 written by Michael McKeon and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlightenment critics from Dryden through Johnson and Wordsworth conceived the modern view that art and especially literature entails a double reflection: a reflection of the world, and a reflection on the process by which that reflection is accomplished. Instead “neoclassicism” and “Augustanism” have been falsely construed as involving a one-dimensional imitation of classical texts and an unselfconscious representation of the world. In fact these Enlightenment movements adopted an oblique perspective that registers the distance between past tradition and its present reenactment, between representation and presence. Two modern movements, Romanticism and modernism, have appropriated as their own these innovations, which derive from Enlightenment thought. Both of these movements ground their error in a misreading of “imitation” as understood by Aristotle and his Enlightenment proponents. Rightly understood, neoclassical imitation, constitutively aware of the difference between what it knows and how it knows it, is an experimental inquiry that generates a range of prefixes—“counter-,” “mock-,” “anti-,” “neo-”—that mark formal degrees of its epistemological detachment. Romantic ideology has denied the role of the imagination in Enlightenment imitation, imposing on the eighteenth century a dichotomous periodization: duplication versus imagination, the mirror versus the lamp. Structuralist ideology has dichotomized narration and description, form and content, structure and history. Poststructuralist ideology has propounded for the novel a contradictory “novel tradition”—realism, modernism, postmodernism, postcolonialism—whose stages both constitute a sequence and collapse it, each stage claiming the innovation of the stage that precedes it. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.
