Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Rev. William James Hall, M. D: Medical Missionary to the Slums of New York, Pioneer Missionary to Pyong Yang, Korea Korea is one of the ends of the earth. Until very recently it has been unknown to the Christian world. It has been overlooked, neglected, and despised. It was a thoroughly heathen country. Its people were as blind and bigoted in their idolatry as any on the face of the earth. The laws of the land provided death as the penalty for any of its people who might embrace Christianity. Those laws are not yet repealed, though they are dead for all the future. Book The Cross and the Rising Sun

Download or read book The Cross and the Rising Sun written by A. Hamish Ion and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on both Canadian and Japanese sources, this book investigates the life, work, and attitudes of Canadian Protestant missionaries in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan (the three main constituent parts of the pre-1945 Japanese empire) from the arrival of the first Canadian missionary in East Asia in 1872 until 1931. Canadian missionaries made a significant contribution to the development of the Protestant movement in the Japanese Empire. Yet their influence also extended far beyond the Christian sphere. Through their educational, social, and medical work; their role in introducing new Western ideas and social pursuits; and their outspoken criticism of the brutalities of Japanese rule in colonial Korea and Taiwan, the activities of Canadian missionaries had an impact on many different facets of society and culture in the Japanese Empire. Missionaries residing in the Japanese Empire served as a link between citizens of Japan and Canada and acted as trusted interpreters of things Japanese to their home constituents.

Book excerpt: Servant Church is about the Values of the Church of Philippi, which is located in one of the cities of greater Baltimore and Washington metropolitan area. This book is primarily about the church’s Ten Values, which are not to be compromised, along with its mission, vision, strategies, structures, and programs related to the values. The Ten Values are only (through redemption of) Jesus, servanthood, precious one, shepherding first, process centered, lay ministry oriented, harmonizing of message and system, small-group accented, walking the talks, and all encompassing grace. Started as a Korean diaspora faith community, Church of Philippi held its inaugural service in a leased warehouse building on October 31, 1993, in Columbia, Maryland, USA. Back then, not many of the Korean immigrant population took residences there. Yet the Lord made the church grow both in lives transformed and in size enlarged for last twenty-two years. Reflection on church expansion histories (early Jerusalem church, Antioch’s Jewish diaspora churches, Moravians church in the eighteenth century, American and English churches during the great awakening movements in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and churches of Latin America, Africa, and Asia in recent decades) teaches reflectioners valuable lessons in that they see the wisdom and power of well-thought-out values of the message, the church, and the culture that they were in. Of course what has been done was by the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit. Yet the Bible teaches us that the wisdom that the Holy Spirit demonstrated is written in it so that we, who came later, may be able to learn from the teachings and then follow after the Holy Spirit. If they were not followed, the church was not able to accomplish the great commission of the Lord as was desired. If followed, the church always prevailed against the power of the gate of Hades. For thirty some years, the author has been a reflectioner and an agonizer over the present plight of the powerless church in the postmodern world and its values. With the invaluable learnings from the Bible and histories of the churches, along with their surrounding cultures, he was able to establish the Ten Values that can unleash the power of a prevailing church. May all the readers of the book find a road map that leads an unprepared church planter, like the author once was, to build a church that prevails against the power of the gate of the Hades (Matt. 16:18). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18, Holy Bible, English Standard Version (2001), Wheaton: Standard Bible Society).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in 1884 with the arrival of the first resident Protestant missionary in Korea and ending with the expulsion of missionaries from the peninsula by the Japanese colonial government in 1942, Balancing Communities examines how the competing demands of communal identities and memberships shaped the early history of Protestantism in Korea. In so doing, the author challenges the conventional history of Korean Protestantism in terms of its relationship to the (South) Korean nation-state. Conversion to Christianity granted Koreans membership in a faith-based organization that, at least in theory, transcended national and political boundaries. As a result, Korean Christians possessed dual membership in a transnational religious community and an earthly political state. Some strove to harmonize these two associations. Others privileged one membership over the other. Regardless, the potential for conflict was always present. Balancing competing demands was not simply a Korean issue. Missionaries also struggled to reconcile their national allegiances, political identities, and religious partnerships with both Korean Christian leaders and government officials. Improperly calibrated communal demands produced conflict and instability among missionaries, Korean Christians, and the state. These demands led to struggles for control over social institutions such as hospitals and schools, incited schisms and debates over church membership, and challenged state power and social patterns. When they were balanced differently, these demands could lead to surprisingly stable and long-lasting relations. The price of this stability, however, was often the perpetuation of inequality, for the language of community masked the hierarchy of power embedded in these associations. Scholars of both Korea and World Christianity have identified South Korea as a prime example of the “successful” spread of Christianity outside Euro-America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Paul S. Cha interrogates the construction of Korean Protestantism and successfully argues that frameworks anchored to nationalism or the nation-state fail to capture the complexities of this religion’s history in Korea and the relationships that formed among Korean Christians, missionaries, and government officials, especially during the colonial period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Korea, public health priorities in maternal and infant welfare privileged the new nation’s reproductive health and women’s responsibility for care work to produce novel organization of services in hospitals and practices in the home. The first monograph on this topic, Imperatives of Care places women and gender at the center of modern medical transformations in Korea. It outlines the professionalization of medicine, nursing, and midwifery, tracing their evolution from new legal and institutional infrastructures in public health and education, and investigates women’s experiences as health practitioners and patients, medical activities directed at women’s bodies, and the related knowledge and goods produced for and consumed by women. Sonja M. Kim draws on archival sources, some not previously explored, to foreground the ways individual women met challenges posed by uneven developments in medicine, intervened in practices aimed at them, andseized the evolving options that became available to promote their personal, familial, and professional interests. She demonstrates how medicine produced, and in turn was produced by, gendered expectations caught between the Korean reformist agenda, the American Protestant missionary enterprise, and Japanese imperialism.

Book Christianity and the Modern Woman in East Asia

Download or read book Christianity and the Modern Woman in East Asia written by Garrett L. Washington and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores the complex roles that Christian ideas and institutions played in the construction of modern womanhood in East Asia. While contributing to gender dynamics that disprivileged women in China, Japan, and Korea, Christianity was also instrumental in women’s efforts to empower themselves and participate in the public sphere. Many literate East Asian women mobilized Christian beliefs, knowledge, institutions, and networks to raise the profile of “The Woman Question,” frame the contours of the related debate, and craft original responses. These chapters examine East Asian women who were markedly influenced by Christianity as students, trainees, educators, professionals, and activists. Using their increased visibility and resources, they addressed the dilemmas and promises of modernity for women in their countries.
