Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Oliver Cromwell This book attempts a true and unprejudiced picture of a great and good man - a man who, with some marked faults, was distinguished by eminent virtues - who was great in arms and in statesmanship; and, in his views of religious and civil liberty, stood a century in advance of his times; and who, from early manhood to his death, feared and served his God with an earnestness of purpose and a depth and constancy of devotion rarely surpassed. It will be seen that the author has made free use of available resources. The various English histories have not, of course, been neglected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Oliver Cromwell Some may think that Carlyle's "Letters and Speeches of Cromwell" render a life of him unnecessary, while, in fact, that work was the only cause of my writing this. A multitude of biographies have been written on Cromwell, but not one based on the general view taken by Carlyle. The letters and speeches of a man can never constitute his biography, though they may give us a correct and complete idea of his character. The letters and speeches of Washington, and his life, are two very different works. In the first place, the narrative is broken up by the introduction of letters and documents on various subjects, that must he placed in chronological order. In the second place, events are mere links, by which these are connected; while in biography, they are the writer's chief concern. In one case, the writings of a man form the burden of a book; in the other, his actions. The compiler of the former cannot condense, while it is the chief business of the historian of the latter to do so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Oliver Cromwell, Vol. 1 of 2 But in this, as in all other instances where the triumph of faction is carried too far, or where the cause of truth is sacrificed to the interests of a party, a strong reaction took place, as soon as the bias was removed which had perverted at once the judgment and the feelings of the maple. The men of the Com monwealth were restored once more to pub lic favour; the virtues of Hampden, and the patriotism of Pym, became again sub jects of popular veneration; and the ablest writers were not ashamed to acknowledge, that even the Protector himself possessed many high qualities, both as 3 states man and a soldier; that he increased or maintained the glory of his country; and that he Wanted nothing to secure for him a place among the most illustrious of princes, but a just title to exercise the power which he had seized with an armed hand. In this case, as in the former, there was manifested a decided tendency to excess. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Oliver Cromwell Classic Reprint

Download or read book Oliver Cromwell Classic Reprint written by John Morley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oliver Cromwell Everybody who now writes about Cromwell must, apart from old authorities, begin by grateful acknowledgment of his inevitable debt to the heroic labours of Mr. Gardiner, our great historian of the seventeenth century; and hardly less to the toil and discernment of Mr. Firth, whose contributions to the "Dictionary of National Biography" show him, besides much else, to know the actors and the incidents of the civil wars with a minute intimacy commonly reserved for the things of the time in which a man actually lives. If I am asked why, then, I need add a new study of Oliver to the lives of him now existing from those two most eminent hands, my apology must be that I was committed to the enterprise (and I rather think that some chapters had already appeared) before I had any idea that these giants of research were to be in the biographic field. Finding myself more than half way across the stream, I had nothing for it but to persevere, with as stout a stroke as I could, to the other shore. Then there is the brilliant volume of my friend of a lifetime, Mr. Frederic Harrison. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Follow the Gleam: A Tale of the Time of Oliver Cromwell This story is the third of the series of Historical Romances which I have planned to write, and is in many respects a natural sequence to the two which have preceded it. The first, Lest We Forget, was a story of the time when Queen Mary, Cardinal Pole, and Stephen Gardiner cast such dark shadows over our land; the second, A Flame of Fire, dealt with the period of the Spanish Armada; while Follow the Gleam deals with the stirring times of the great Civil War. In this last story my reading of history has led me to adopt an attitude which I believe is not generally taken by novelists who have sought to depict the great. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical and Critical Account of the Life of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland Mr. Waller frequently waited on him, being his kinf man; and as he often declared, obferved him to be very well read in the Greek and Roman Rory The following pafiage I give at length, not doubting the reader Will be pleafed with it. When Cromwell took on him the protefiorfhip, in the year 1653, the very morning the ceremony was to be perform'd, a mcf fenger came to Dr. Manton, to acquaint him that he muft immediately come to Wln'teball: the Doetor afked him the occafion he told him he {hould know that when he came there. The Proteetor himfelf, without any previous notice, told him what he was to do, i. E. To pray upon that occafion the Doetor la boured all he could to be excufed, and told him it was a work of that nature which required fome time to confider and prepare for it. The Proteeior replied, That he knew he was not at a lofs to perform the fervice he expected from him; and Opening his Rudy door, he put him in with his hand, and bid him con fiderthere; which was not above half an hour: the Doetor employed that time in looking over his books, which he faid was a noble colledtion Manton was a judge. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture on the Life and Character of Oliver Cromwell: Delivered Before the Young Men's Literary Association of Cleveland; On Thursday Evening, Jan, 28, 1847 Gentlemen, -the lecture of which you request a copy for the press, was prepared amid pressing engagements and with no expecta tion or thought oi' its publication. Had I wished to publish my views of the life and character of Oliver Cromwell, at all, I should have preferred to exhibit them more fully than the limits of a single lecture would permit, and With a larger space for the presentation of the facts and arguments on which those views are based. The lecture was prepared and delivered in thet hope rather of exciting inquiry than of gaining the immediate assent to my views of all who might happen to hear me. It was not to be expected that all minds would be pre pared at once to admit the correctness of a picture of Cromwell, so unlike the horrid caricature - drawn by political and ecclesiastical pm'tisans - from which alone not a few Americans as well as English men have received their impressions of that extraordinary man. But it seemed proper, in a lecture intended solely for the audience to which this was delivered, to ask in behalf of the man who was inti mately associated, in the cause of' civil and religious liberty, with Hampden and who, by his liberal and magnanimous policy, as well as by his pre-eminent abilities, won the confidence, the friendship, and the admiration of Milton, a rehearing - a re-examination of his history in the light of all the facts which have now been made acces sible, and with a proper scrutiny of the statements of prejudiced writers.
