Book excerpt: Excerpt from Luther by a Lutheran, or a Full Length Portrait of Doctor Martin Luther: Being a Comprehensive, Though Condensed and Correct History of the Life and Stupendous Achievements of the Great Reformer, From the Cradle to the Grave IN presenting the Life of Luther to the American public, it would seem to be proper to give a few reasons for such an um dertaking at this time. It may be asked and no doubt will be, have we not Lives of Luther in abundance? Why then add another to the list It is true we have d'aubigne, and Milner, and Scott, and Bowers, and Tischer, and a number of inferior works; but it is a remarkable fact, that we have not in the Eng lish language a single life of Luther, that pretends to give any thing like a correct and extensive account of the great Reform er, written by a Lutheran. And yet we humbly conceive that the gre atreformer ought to be fairly represented in English by a member of the church that bears his illustrious name. There are thousands and tens of thousands of as warm-hearted and whole-souled Lutherans in this country as ever lived, who are not able to read the rich and copious language of their fathers; and ought they not to be supplied with a correct and impartial life of the illustrious Reformer? Far be it from us to accuse those good and learned men of other churches who have writ ten the life of Luther, of doing him injustice, or intentionally misrepresenting him, but in most of such works we often see a parsimony of praise, which actually amounts to unintentional misrepresentation. This we have endeavored to correct in the following pages, and how well we may have succeeded, the ln telligent reader will be able to? Judge after a careful perusal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Luther: An Historical Portrait The reader must not expect to find here a com plete life of Luther. To follow him step by step, this may be left to his admirers, to whom of course even the most trifling incident in the Reformer's life is of the greatest importance. My Object was different; I wished to faithfully describe Luther's character and work or rather to let him describe it himself and to let him express his own views on the most important subjects. Book Martin Luther

Download or read book Martin Luther written by Scott H. Hendrix and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteenth-century German friar whose public conflict with the medieval Roman Church triggered the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther was neither an unblemished saint nor a single-minded religious zealot according to this provocative new biography by Scott Hendrix. The author presents Luther as a man of his time: a highly educated scholar and teacher and a gifted yet flawed human being driven by an optimistic yet ultimately unrealized vision of “true religion.” This bold, insightful account of the life of Martin Luther provides a new perspective on one of the most important religious figures in history, focusing on Luther’s entire life, his personal relationships and political motivations, rather than on his theology alone. Relying on the latest research and quoting extensively from Luther’s correspondence, Hendrix paints a richly detailed portrait of an extraordinary man who, while devout and courageous, had a dark side as well. No recent biography in English explores as fully the life and work of Martin Luther long before and far beyond the controversial posting of his 95 Theses in 1517, an event that will soon be celebrated as the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

Book Luther

Book excerpt: Martin Luther had one goal: peace with God. He didn't find it in the holy relics and indulgences of the church or in life as an obedient monk. Luther discovered God's treasure of truth buried under human laws and regulations. He discovered the Gospel in the Word of God. Luther took his stand on that Word, defying the highest authorities in the church and state. In so doing, he started the oldest continuing evangelical movement in history. This is Luther's dramatic story. Book jacket.
