Book The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Richard Newton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young, Vol. 3 We have an account of this lesson in St. John 13: 4 - 15. It is taught us in these words He riseth from supper, and laid aside his gar ments; and took a towel and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash his disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then occurs the incident about the objection which Peter made to letting Jesus wash his feet, and the way in which that objection was overcome. And then the story goes on thus So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, 'know ye what I have done unto you? Ye call me Master, and Lord; and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye ought also to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do, as I have done to you. This was a very surprising scene. How astonished the angels must have been when they looked upon it! They had known Jesus in heaven, before he took upon him our nature, and came into this fallen world. They had seen him in the glory which he had with the Father, before the world was. They had worshipped him in the midst of all that glory. And then, when they saw him, girded with a towel, and washing the feet of poor sinful men, whom he came from heaven to save, how surprising it must have seemed to them! And When Jesus told his disciples, that his object in doing this was to set them an example, that they should do as he had done to them, he did not mean that they should literally make a practice of washing each other's feet; but that they should show the same humility to others that he had shown to them, by being willing to do anything, however humble it might be, in order to promote their comfort and happiness. It is not the act itself, here spoken of, that Jesus teaches us to do; but the spirit of humility, in which the act was performed, that he teaches us to cultivate. We might go through the form of washing the feet of other persons, and yet feel proud and haughty all the time we were doing it. Then we should not be following the example of Jesus at all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ, Vol. 3 When, in spite of this, Jesus still required of them' to believe firmly in His Messianic destiny, they must have thought that surely now He would express Himself as to His calling in some unmistakeable way. That this was so undoubtedly follows from what is indicated as to the kind of sign which they demanded. If Jesus desired to be the second Deliverer of Israel, they required Him to show His legitimation in the same way as the first had done. Moses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young, Vol. 2 A covenant means a bargain, or agreement made between two or more persons. One of these persons promises to do certain things, provided that the other will do certain other things. For example, we read in Genesis, twenty-ninth chapter, about Jacob going to live for awhile with his uncle, Laban, in Padanaram, where Abraham had formerly lived. Laban and Jacob made an agreement or covenant with each other. Jacob wished to marry Rachel, one of Laban's daughters. Laban said, you shall have my daughter on these conditions: if you will serve me for seven years, as a shepherd, taking care of my flocks of sheep, then, as soon as the seven years are ended, you shall marry Rachel, and have her for your wife. Book That Sweet Story of Old

Book excerpt: Excerpt from That Sweet Story of Old: A Life of Christ for the Young Several years ago, a friend suggested that I should write for children and young people, a book that might lead them to study for themselves, lovingly and earnestly, the story of our Saviour's life among men, as it is given us by the four evangelists. At first I hesitated to attempt the task, but as the days and weeks slipped by the desire to undertake it, grew more and more insistent, until the thought floated before me, like a beautiful vision that might in time become a dream fulfilled. I began as I cherished the hope of helping others, to read and reread the sweet story of old, until with the disciples I walked on holy ground. Familiar as are the incidents of our Lord's ministry, part indeed of the warp and woof of memory, they have revealed Him to me with a vividness hitherto unfelt. To study this strangely beautiful, this unflawed life, has been to enter into a new abiding with the Master, to have a new sense of His personality as a force in the world. Download or read book The Life of Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Mgr; E. Le Camus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ, Vol. 1 This is the sixth edition of this book. It has undergone some changes in form and has received some important additions. To ask the author the reason for thus retouching a work which the public has readily received with favour, would be like asking the artist, who always sees his ideal better than he can realise it, why, when every one is praising his work, he feels himself irresistibly moved to begin again, striving each day to throw more light on certain details, to make others more precise, to harmonise better all the outlines, until he has put into his picture or his statue all that he feels, all that he sees, all that he can. The author, indeed, is aware that in putting pen to paper to write a life of Our Lord, one must from the first give up all thought of attaining even the most relative perfection. For how can one flatter himself that he has enclosed in a frame worthy of it, as if it were simply that of some great man, the astounding physiognomy of the Master, which, suddenly, when we think to grasp it and set it firmly on our earthly horizon, assumes superhuman proportions, and, in the midst of infinite light, mounts up toward heaven, where it is lost in God?
