This double life of Turner, as observer and artist, compels us to distinguish between art and mere observation from the very beginning, under peril of falling into snares which the subject itself has laid for us. We must understand that art and nature are not the same world, but two worlds which only resemble each other and have many things in common. Turner, with the instinct of genius, understood this from the first. Turner is a most instructive subject for the student of art, because he is always and above all things the artist.
