Book The Life of Isle Royale Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Isle Royale Classic Reprint written by Napier Shelton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Isle Royale This book is a natural history of Isle Royale for the layman. It emphasizes the ecology of the island - that is, the relationships among its plants, animals, and physical environment - rather than the characteristics of individual species. The human history has been viewed. Largely from the standpoint of its impact on the land. The book has been written in a way that we hope will benefit armchair travelers as well as those fortunate persons who actually visit the island. Scientists have been studying Isle Royale since the mid-1800's, and I have read and learned much from their reports. Current students of the island have been particularly helpful. I would like to thank Dr. Robert J anke and Rolf Peterson, both of Michigan Technological University, for valuable informa tion in the field and for reviewing the text; Dr. Durward Allen, Purdue Uni versity, for reviewing; Dr. D. B. Botkin and his research assistants, Yale University, for information in the field; Dr. Peter A. Jordan, co-leader of the Yale group, for a very helpful criticism of the manuscript; and Dr. N. King Huber, U. S. Geological Survey, and Dr. H. E. Wright, University of Minne sota, for reviewing chapters 2 and 3. His skin felt dry and shrivelled. His throat was parched, and irritated by countless cigarettes. He began to cough, weakly, yet with sufficient force to make his head feel as if it were going to explode. Repressing a groan, he rolled over on his back, gazed at the ceiling, and tried to remember where he was. Book excerpt: An expanded edition of the original classic, long out-of-print, The Mystic Symbol describes thousands of Christian, inscribed tablets, unearthed across Michigan. The Michigan Mound Builders left behind 10,000 to 30,000 artifacts as a testament to their presence in North America. Mound burials have yielded evidence of a culture with Eastern Hemisphere influence in their spiritual and everyday life. Controversy has engulfed this find of artifacts mainly because they were here before Columbus of 1492 which is unacceptable to our academics today. Nevertheless, the Michigan artifacts continue to surface even today in the state of Michigan. This is fascinating look into North America's diverse history.

Book excerpt: Napier Shelton takes us on a journey as he spends a year at his family's cottage on the lake. Having visited Lake Huron for over thirty years, Shelton weaves family memories into his evocative and informed account of the seasons on this great lake. In 1995, Shelton spent a year at the cottage more fully exploring Lake Huron and its varied shores. He writes about Native American fishing rights, small towns, the fearsome ice, and the migration of birds. He follows the seasonal changes of life in the water. We accompany him on commercial fishing boats, a research vessel studying lake trout, and a Coast Guard icebreaker. We experience the travels and tragedies of venturers on Lake Huron over the past four centuries. Huron is pleasurable reading for any student of natural history or the Great Lakes region, or for anyone who has ever spent time at a summer cottage or wished to do so.
