Book excerpt: A classic work of American theatre, based on the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which pitted Clarence Darrow against William Jennings Bryan in defense of a schoolteacher accused of teaching the theory of evolution The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake was the freedom of every American. One of the most moving and meaningful plays of our generation. Praise for Inherit the Wind "A tidal wave of a drama."—New York World-Telegram And Sun “Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee were classic Broadway scribes who knew how to crank out serious plays for thinking Americans. . . . Inherit the Wind is a perpetually prescient courtroom battle over the legality of teaching evolution. . . . We’re still arguing this case–all the way to the White House.”—Chicago Tribune “Powerful . . . a crackling good courtroom play . . . [that] provides two of the juiciest roles in American theater.”—Copley News Service “[This] historical drama . . . deserves respect.”—The Columbus Dispatch

Book excerpt: Though its stand-point is Evolution and its subject Man, this book is far from being designed to prove that Man has relations, compromising or otherwise, with lower animals. Its theme is Ascent, not Descent. It is a History, not an Argument. And Evolution, in the narrow sense in which it is often used when applied to Man, plays little part in the drama outlined here. So far as the general scheme of Evolution is introduced--and in the Introduction and elsewhere this is done at length --the object is the important one of pointing out how its nature has been misconceived, indeed how its greatest factor has been overlooked in almost all contemporary scientific thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Henry Drummond '... By a fine gentleman I mean a man completely qualified as well for the service and goody as for the ornament and delight of society. When I consider the frame of mind peculiar to a gentleman I suppose it graced with all the dignity and elevation of spirit that human nature is capable of To this I would have joined a clear understandings a reason free from prejudice a steady judgment and an extensive knowledge. When I think of the heart of a gentleman I imagine it firm and intrepid void of all inordinate passions, and full of tenderness, compassion, and benevolence. When I view the fine gentleman with regard to his manners, me thinks I see him modest without bashfulness, frank and affable without impertinence, obliging and complaisant without servility, cheerful and in good humour without noise. These amiable qualities are not easily obtained, neither are there many men that have a genius to excel this way, A finished gentleman is perhaps the most uncommon of all the great characters in life. Besides the natural endowments with which this distinguished man is to be born, he must run through a long series of education. Before he makes his appearance and shines in the world he must be principled in religion, instructed in all the moral virtues, and led through the whole course of the polite arts and sciences. He should be no stranger to courts and to camps: he must travel to open his mind, to enlarge his views, to learn the policies and interests of foreign states, as well as to fashion and polish himself, and to get clear of national prejudices, of which every country has its share. To all these more essential improvements he must not forget to add the fashionable ornaments of life, such as are the languages and the bodily exercises most in vogue; neither would I have him think even dress itself beneath his notice.' Book excerpt: In his visionary work on the natural and sacred spheres, New Thought pioneer Henry Drummond started to bridge the gap between science and spirituality. He explained how modern laws of physics, biology, cybernetics, and ecology are the same laws that govern the spiritual realm. He showed how various scientific findings may be applied to seemingly divine human experiences. For Drummond, this realization meant we could live freely, not bound by a limited view of the universe in which only matter could be manipulated. The sixth addition to Ruth Miller's Library of Hidden Knowledge series, One Lawupdates Drummond's amazing work into accessible, modern English alongside the original text. This format provides a clear interpretation that cuts through Drummond's difficult, outdated terminology, helping us understand the often opposing-but overlapping-scientific and spiritual realms. Miller, an ordained New Thought minister, integrates up-to-date scientific, spiritual, and cultural information to clarify important metaphysical principles and bring Drummond's philosophy to all who seek its truth.

Book excerpt: Shortly after the death of Scottish evangelist and scholar Henry Drummond, his family celebrated his life by publishing this collection of his sermons, prefaced with memorials by evangelist W. Robertson Nicoll and theologian Ian Maclaren. Drummond addresses such topics as the nature of Christ, human sin and guilt, and salvation, and he suggests ways in which Christians can lead lives that are pleasing to God. Although determining the will of God for one’s life can often seem difficult, Drummond stresses the importance of prayer in listening for God’s voice and discerning His leading. Especially admired by young people during his life, Drummond’s warm character shines through in these heartfelt messages.
