Book Growing Up with a Single Parent

Download or read book Growing Up with a Single Parent written by Sara McLanahan and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonwhite and white, rich and poor, born to an unwed mother or weathering divorce, over half of all children in the current generation will live in a single-parent family--and these children simply will not fare as well as their peers who live with both parents. This is the clear and urgent message of this powerful book. Based on four national surveys and drawing on more than a decade of research, Growing Up with a Single Parent sharply demonstrates the connection between family structure and a child's prospects for success. What are the chances that the child of a single parent will graduate from high school, go on to college, find and keep a job? Will she become a teenage mother? Will he be out of school and out of work? These are the questions the authors pursue across the spectrum of race, gender, and class. Children whose parents live apart, the authors find, are twice as likely to drop out of high school as those in two-parent families, one and a half times as likely to be idle in young adulthood, twice as likely to become single parents themselves. This study shows how divorce--particularly an attendant drop in income, parental involvement, and access to community resources--diminishes children's chances for well-being. The authors provide answers to other practical questions that many single parents may ask: Does the gender of the child or the custodial parent affect these outcomes? Does having a stepparent, a grandmother, or a nonmarital partner in the household help or hurt? Do children who stay in the same community after divorce fare better? Their data reveal that some of the advantages often associated with being white are really a function of family structure, and that some of the advantages associated with having educated parents evaporate when those parents separate. In a concluding chapter, McLanahan and Sandefur offer clear recommendations for rethinking our current policies. Single parents are here to stay, and their worsening situation is tearing at the fabric of our society. It is imperative, the authors show, that we shift more of the costs of raising children from mothers to fathers and from parents to society at large. Likewise, we must develop universal assistance programs that benefit low-income two-parent families as well as single mothers. Startling in its findings and trenchant in its analysis, Growing Up with a Single Parent will serve to inform both the personal decisions and governmental policies that affect our children's--and our nation's--future.

Excerpt from "The Intentional Father" In the initial visit with my son, I witnessed a child who was bright, smiled, yelled, stomped his feet and screamed. It was not that he could not talk, he would not talk. He had his own language, created in his mind to get his needs satisfied as a result of them not being met prior. I was told that he could only say 7 words, all in Spanish. I went to a corner on this initial visit and sat there with a book and a stuffed bear and waited. Ever so slowly, he approached me, would touch me and run away and giggle. Eventually, he sat in my lap and looked at me for a while, with his social worker, the foster mother and my adoption worker looking on he put his hand on my face and said "daddy". This was not one of the words that he knew and it was not in Spanish......so it began.

Book excerpt: Wingspan features heart-warming stories of inspiration and hope from 45 single parents and is a must-read for everyone who ever has been or will be involved in the raising of children. You don't have to be single or a parent to be inspired by the depth and width of these parents' love for their sons and daughters. Praise from Donald Miller, Governor Mary Fallin and Brian McLaren: "What single parents really need, beyond formulas, are stories of hope, challenge and triumph. Single parents will find a thousand tips in this book, but more importantly, they'll find friends who have walked the road before them and made it through with a story to share. Single parents don't have to feel alone, and this book is proof." -- Donald Miller, NYT best-selling author of Blue Like Jazz and other titles, creator of Storyline conferences, and founder of The Mentoring Project "Wingspan tells the true stories of single parents who are rising above the challenges that life has thrown at them. It offers much-needed encouragement, inspiration, and reminds all those who struggle that they can turn their tragedy into triumph." -- Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin "We're all attracted to inspiring stories in which people face huge hardships and come through triumphant. But we're also depressed by those stories, because real life is always way more complicated. Wingspan is such a gift because it tells inspiring stories but doesn't sand off the rough edges. I know it will become a companion to pull people through tough times - as single parents and as human beings." -- Brian D. McLaren, author/speaker/activist/blogger (brianmclaren.net)

Book excerpt: The second edition of Joe Newman's acclaimed book Raising Lions is an essential guide for parents and teachers raising strong-willed, precocious children. It offers clear insights into what motivates the most challenging behaviors, and what kinds of responses turn these behaviors around. "One of the best books on child-rearing I've ever read. Joe Newman describes a cultural shift that has reinforced anxiety and behavior disorders in children by negating parental authority. Even more important, he provides specific, non-punitive ways for parents to help their kids by taking back their authority. Filled with examples and experiences from the author's own life as a child with A.D.H.D., the book is a treasure-trove of useful information." Barry Michels, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of The Tools. "This book is packed with useful information. It is an insightful and practical guide for managing children. I would recommend it to any parent." L. Alan Sroufe, Professor Emeritus Ph.D. University of Minnesota Current childrearing techniques seek to develop children who are confident, self-assured, and unafraid to speak their minds-lions instead of lambs. Although largely positive, this shift has brought with it some very serious problems in our children's behavior. Without going back to an authoritarian model, Joe Newman has developed new ways of helping children develop the ability to self-regulate without undermining their confidence and individuality. Raising Lions challenges us to re-examine our interactions and relationships with children, re-think the root causes of behavior problems and find new ways to support healthy, happy development. For over 20 years Joe Newman has worked with children, parents, teachers, and administrators to help them understand and improve child behavior.

Book Deadbeat Dad but Not by Choice A Story of Warning From a Loving Father to Any Parent Willing to Listen

Download or read book Deadbeat Dad but Not by Choice A Story of Warning From a Loving Father to Any Parent Willing to Listen written by Brian Cohen and published by Mill City Press, Incorporated. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Cohen can't count the number of times he should have left an unhealthy relationship. So it should have been no surprise when he was in the crosshairs of his ex's vindictive nature. Although it was a surprise when his daughter Niyah was the weapon used against him. Many have called the bond between Brian and Niyah unbreakable, yet Brian's ex was able to break it; she was able to erase its existence. In Deadbeat Dad Brian describes his experience of having his daughter ripped from his grasp by his ex and a willing accomplice, the broken family court system. Brian describes situations that transpired during his custody battle, in hopes that it helps another father/mother prepare for the battle ahead or makes someone realize the battle is not worth it. Providing the best for your children is most important, not getting revenge on the other parent. You must read this book if you want to understand what fathers have to deal with and potential options to ensure you don't end up in the same situation as Brian. Brian Cohen is a Digital Marketing Executive in San Francisco, husband of Nicole and father of two, Niyah and Brian II. Equal parenting rights are very important to me and I hope my story will inspire others to give it all they have to be in their children's lives. My experience with the family court system and child support services is something that I wish no one else has to experience. www.deadbeatdadbook.com

Book Opportunity Knocks

Download or read book Opportunity Knocks written by Senator Tim Scott and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir about overcoming adversity in America, the U. S. Senator responsible for creating "opportunity zones" explains how hard work and community growth can drive businesses and end poverty. Senator Tim Scott knows adversity. As the son of a single mother from North Charleston, South Carolina, he struggled to get through school and had his dreams of a college football career shattered by a car wreck. But thanks to his mother and a few mentors along the way, he learned that "failure isn't failure unless you quit." He also learned that it's hard work and perseverance, not a government handout, that will get you ahead in life. Today, Senator Scott is the only black Republican in the Senate, and he believes that investment and commerce are the best ways to rebuild our most impoverished communities. This is the idea behind his signature piece of legislation, the "opportunity zones" program, which President Trump has strongly endorsed. The program provides tax incentives for businesses that invest in low-income urban areas, seeking to replace things like welfare and government assistance. In Opportunity Knocks, Senator Scott will tell his life story with a focus on adversity and opportunity. He will teach readers about the principles of hard work and hope while addressing the dangers of veering too far toward socialist policies. The book will also not shy away from discussions of racism and racial inequality in the United States and will recount some of Senator Scott's own brushes with racism as well as the many discussions he's had with people who want to help, including President Trump.

Book What Money Can t Buy

Download or read book What Money Can t Buy written by Susan E. Mayer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children from poor families generally do a lot worse than children from affluent families. They are more likely to develop behavior problems, to score lower on standardized tests, and to become adults in need of public assistance. Susan Mayer asks whether income directly affects children's life chances, as many experts believe, or if the factors that cause parents to have low incomes also impede their children's life chances. She explores the question of causation with remarkable ingenuity. First, she compares the value of income from different sources to determine, for instance, if a dollar from welfare is as valuable as a dollar from wages. She then investigates whether parents' income after an event, such as teenage childbearing, can predict that event. If it can, this suggests that income is a proxy for unmeasured characteristics that affect both income and the event. Next she compares children living in states that pay high welfare benefits with children living in states with low benefits. Finally, she examines whether national income trends have the expected impact on children. Regardless of the research technique, the author finds that the effect of income on children's outcomes is smaller than many experts have thought. Mayer then shows that the things families purchase as their income increases, such as cars and restaurant meals, seldom help children succeed. On the other hand, many of the things that do benefit children, such as books and educational outings, cost so little that their consumption depends on taste rather than income. Money alone, Mayer concludes, does not buy either the material or the psychological well-being that children require to succeed.
