Book British Banking

Download or read book British Banking written by R. C. Michie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Financial Crisis made its first appearance in Britain towards the end of 2007 with the failure of the Northern Rock Bank. It then reached an unparalleled intensity a year later when the government was forced to intervene to prevent the collapse of Lloyds/HBOS and RBS/Natwest. Before these events the British banking system possessed a long established reputation for resilience and competence that made it one of the most admired and trusted in the world. The financial crisis of 2007/8, and the subsequent revelations about the behaviour of bankers, destroyed that reputation and drove a desire for a complete reform of the British banking system. Forgotten in this headlong rush towards radical restructuring were the reasons why the British banking system had become so admired and trusted. The aim of this book is to explain why the British banking system gained its reputation for resilience and competence, maintained it for over 100 years, and then lost it in such a rapid and spectacular fashion. To achieve that aim requires a study of the entire banking system. Banks are key components of a complex financial system continually interacting with each other, and constantly changing over time, This makes the conventional distinctions drawn between different types of banks, including those specialising in international finance, savings and loans, corporate lending, and retail deposits and borrowing, inappropriate for any long-term analysis. The distinctions between different types of banks were neither absolute nor permanent but relative and temporary. Banks were also central to both the payments system and the money market without which no modern economy could function. What this book is about is the development of the British banking system as a whole over more than three centuries. Only with such an understanding is it possible to appreciate what the British banking system achieved and then maintained from the middle of the 19th century onwards, why it was lost in such a short space of time, and what needs to be done to return it to the position it once occupied. Without such an understanding the mistakes of the recent past are destined to be repeated time and gain.

Book The End of Insularity

Download or read book The End of Insularity written by Richard Peter Treadwell Davenport-Hines and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cossacks who wore German uniforms saw their service not as treason to the motherland, but as an episode in the revolution of 1917, part of an ongoing struggle against Moscow and against Communism. A Wehrmacht needing men and an SS hungry for power reinterpreted or ignored Hitler's racist ideology to form entire divisions of Cossack volunteers. German offices developed relationships to "their" Cossacks similar to those in the French and British colonial armies. The Cossacks responded by fighting effectively and reliably on the Russian Front and in the Balkans. Their reward was forced repatriation into Stalin's Gulag at the hands of the Western powers in 1945.

Financial practitioners and others will also find much of interest here, in terms of both fascinating history and of insights into an era when a global market was rapidly evolving largely free of the twentieth-century distortions and hindrances introduced by wars, interventionist governments and exchange controls.

Book Banking in Crisis

Download or read book Banking in Crisis written by John D. Turner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the lessons of the past help us to prevent another banking collapse in the future? This is the first book to tell the story of the rise and fall of British banking stability over the past two centuries, shedding new light on why banking systems crash and on the factors underpinning banking stability. John Turner shows that there have only been two major banking crises in Britain during this time - the crises of 1825–6 and 2007–8. Although there were episodic bouts of instability in the interim, the banking system was crisis free. Why was the British banking system stable for such a long time? And, why did the British banking system implode in 2008? In answering these questions, the book explores the long-run evolution of bank regulation, the role of the Bank of England, bank rescues and the need to hold shareholders to account.

Book Bank of Scotland 1695 1995

Download or read book Bank of Scotland 1695 1995 written by Alan Cameron and published by Mainstream Publishing Company. This book was released on 1995 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bank of Scotland celebrates its tercentenary in 1995. This book reveals its full story, beginning in 1695 with the Bank's foundation by an Act of the Scottish Parliament - a full 12 years before the Union with England - through the industrial revolution and two World Wars, right up to the present day. This illustrated study examines how the attitudes of the Bank were shaped by men of vision and periods of tremendous change and upheaval, and explores the rivalries and mergers, the recessions and investments that have made the Bank what it is today. Underlying every aspect of the Bank's history can be seen a determination to remain Scottish and independent - principles which have been challenged many times throughout the centuries but which in 1995 remain unchanged.
