Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Writings of William Law Symonds The design of publishing a book of the selected writings of William Law Symonds was formed some time after his death, in 1862; but the Civil War in our country was then raging and the time was unpropitious for the execution of any literary purpose involving public attention. An intimate friend of the deceased author, - Mr. Robert Carter, prominent among the writers who were at that time working for the newspaper press and the booksellers of New York, - undertook to collect his writings and to prepare a memoir of the writer; but obstacles intervened to impede him in the prosecution of the work and, ultimately, he felt constrained to abandon it. As years passed, circumstances became less and less auspicious for the publication as at first proposed. Friends of Mr. Symonds were dispersed by fortune or removed by death. The literary reputation that he had acquired, - not at any time extensive, though, within a limited circle, unquestionably brilliant, - was, practically, forgotten. The project slept. Now, at the distance of forty-six years since his death, the work he performed and the publicity it obtained are unknown, and, to the general public, the mention of his name would be mention of the name of a stranger. Book Beauty and the Beast

Download or read book Beauty and the Beast written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1994 marked the centenary of the deaths of Walter Pater, Christina Rossetti and Robert Louis Stevenson, and Beauty and the Beast is largely devoted to an exploration of aspects of their lives and their writings, and the role they played in the development of British literature. Both individually and as a group, these writers offer interesting opportunities to investigate a distinctive ambivalence in the literature of the last three decades of the nineteenth century. Thus we may observe how Pater as the founder of Aestheticism in British literature addressed the Victorian dilemma how to live in Marius the Epicurean; how Rossetti's poetry expresses both spiritual and erotic tendencies, while Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is perhaps the epitome of the fin-de-siècle tension between good and evil, beauty and beast. Yet the scope of this book also includes an examination of the relationships between these three authors and their contemporaries, and of their setting, on the British Isles as well as on the Continent. Thus George Moore makes his appearance, next to Anton Chekhov, Arthur Schnitzler, Oscar Wilde, Alain Fournier and Louis Couperus. The various discussions of these French, German, Russian, Italian, Irish and Dutch connections in this book reflect the international setting of the European fin-de-siècle as a background against which the theme of Beauty and the Beast is discussed. Mack, Tim Youngs, Neil Cornwell, Sjef Houppermans, Jacques B.H. Alblas, John Stokes, Susan de Sola Rodstein.

Book Shakespeare s Apprenticeship

Download or read book Shakespeare s Apprenticeship written by Ramon Jiménez and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of the Shakespeare canon have come into question in recent years as scholars add plays or declare others only partially his work. Now, new literary and historical evidence demonstrates that five heretofore anonymous plays published or performed during his lifetime are actually his first versions of later canonical works. Three histories, The Famous Victories of Henry the Fifth, The True Tragedy of Richard the Third, and The Troublesome Reign of John; a comedy, The Taming of a Shrew; and a romance, King Leir, are products of Shakespeare's juvenile years. Later in his career, he transformed them into the plays that bear nearly identical titles. Each is strikingly similar to its canonical counterpart in terms of structure, plot and cast, though the texts were entirely rewritten. Virtually all scholars, critics and editors of Shakespeare have overlooked or disputed the idea that he had anything to do with them. This addition of five plays to the Shakespeare canon introduces a new facet to the authorship debate, and supplies further evidence that the real Shakespeare was Edward de Vere, seventeenth Earl of Oxford.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglo-Italian cultural connections in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries have been the subject of numerous studies in recent decades. Within that wider body of literature, there has been a growing emphasis on appreciation of the history and culture of Renaissance Italy, especially in nineteenth-century Britain. In 1954 J.R. Hale's England and the Italian Renaissance was a pioneering account of the subject, followed in 1992 by Hilary Fraser's monograph The Victorians and Renaissance Italy and in 2005 by Victorian and Edwardian Responses to the Italian Renaissance, edited by John E. Law and Lene Østermark-Johansen. There is, however, an obvious gap in the literature concerning the pivotal figure of William Roscoe (1753–1831), the first English-language biographer of Lorenzo de' Medici and of Pope Leo X. The Life of Lorenzo de' Medici called the Magnificent proved to be so popular as to prompt the claim that Roscoe effectively invented the Italian Renaissance as it has become understood by subsequent generations of readers in the English-speaking world. This collection of ten essays redresses the balance by examining Roscoe as biographer, as a connoisseur of Italian literature and as a collector of Italian works of art.
