Their writings, along with the other sources included in this volume, provide a wealth of insight and information into Dante's unique character and life, from his susceptibility to the torments of passionate love, his involvement in politics, scholastic enthusiasms and military experience, to the stories behind the greatest heights of his poetic achievements. Not only are these accounts invaluable for their subject matter, they are also seminal examples of early biographical writing. Also included in this volume is a biography of Boccaccio, perhaps as great an influence on world literature as Dante himself.

Book The Earliest Lives of Dante Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Earliest Lives of Dante Classic Reprint written by Giovanni Boccaccio and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earliest Lives of Dante These lives of Dante were written, one within fifty, the other within a hundred and twenty-five years, after the poet's death. Boccaccio was acquainted with at least four persons who, as we have reason to believe, knew Dante in the flesh, and he could draw his information from them as well as from popular tradition. Bruni, on the other hand, who, as he himself says, supplements the work of his predecessor, derives the bulk of his matter from public documents and let ters of Dante, which are not now extant. The value, then, Of their works lies in their nearness to authoritative sources. No other documents Of anything like equal importance as regards the life of Dante have come down to us. Our knowledge of the poet as he moved among men is almost wholly derived from these two lives and from his own works. The facts here presented are not all Of equal significance or trustworthiness. The dream of the poet's mother, the presumed unhappiness Of his marriage, the charge made against him of great licentiousness in youth and manhood, the dates here given of his works, the loss and recovery Of the last thirteen cantos of the C ommedia, have no evidence in their favor other than that which is here presented. But the main features Of his life: the time and place of his birth, his liberal education, his life-long love of Beatrice on earth and in the spirit, his marriage to Gemma Donati, his rise to the highest places in the government of Florence, his banishment and twenty years of exile, and the date and manner of his death, these things, I repeat, we know to be true. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Dante IN the fourteen years which have elapsed since the appearance of Dean Plumptre's Life of Dante a good deal of labour has been bestowed upon the investigation of points connected with the history of the poet and his times; and it may be doubted whether the accomplished author himself would still be prepared to main tain all the positions which his enthusiasm for his subject then led him to take up. At all events it was thought that, another edition being walled for, something might be done in the way of pruning down a little of the some what exuberant conjecture in which the Dean, after the fashion of an earlier school of bio graphers, was apt to indulge. This has been done very sparingly; and a good deal has been left which the present editor is by no means prepared to endorse; but it is hoped that in. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biography of Dante Alighieri: Set Forth as His Life Journey First, then, it behooves us to select from this fragment one short phrase for immediate use the Journey of our Life - the two nouns being capitalized for a little added stress (el Cammin di nostra Vita). Such is Dante's title of his own biography, as he writes it down in the opening line of his most distinctive book; and so we shall follow closely his example, in naming this record of his career Dante's Life Journey. Let it also be here noted that this title appears to have been given by the poet to his work after its completion during his last years (1320 Herein he would seem with the prime stroke of his pen to hit not only the exact designation but also the germinal conception of his masterpiece. Thus we may like wise deem the foregoing seven Italian words as his own suggestive introduction, since they echo to us' at the start the first musical line of his far singing spiritual autobiography. Book excerpt: A Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year A Marginal Revolution Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year A Seminary Co-op Notable Book of the Year A Times Higher Education Book of the Week A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year Marco Santagata’s Dante: The Story of His Life illuminates one of the world’s supreme poets from many angles—writer, philosopher, father, courtier, political partisan. Santagata brings together a vast body of Italian scholarship on Dante’s medieval world, untangles a complex web of family and political relationships for English readers, and shows how the composition of the Commedia was influenced by local and regional politics. “Reading Marco Santagata’s fascinating new biography, the reader is soon forced to acknowledge that one of the cornerstones of Western literature [The Divine Comedy], a poem considered sublime and universal, is the product of vicious factionalism and packed with local scandal.” —Tim Parks, London Review of Books “This is a wonderful book. Even if you have not read Dante you will be gripped by its account of one of the most extraordinary figures in the history of literature, and one of the most dramatic periods of European history. If you are a Dantean, it will be your invaluable companion forever.” —A. N. Wilson, The Spectator

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante, His Times and His Work In connection with some of the remarks in the opening chapter, Professor Butcher's Essay on The Dawn of Romanticism in Greek Poetry should be noticed. I do not think that the aecom plished author's view is incompatible with mine; though I admit that I had not taken much account of the Greek writers whom we call post-classical. But it is to be noted, as bearing on the question raised in the second footnote on p. 9, that most or all of the writers whom he cites were either Asiatics or nearly touched by Asiatic influences.
