Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Charles James Fox, Vol. 3 Seven years have elapsed since the appearance of the second volume of the "Life of Fox;" but the interest of the subject has by no means decreased, and while I regret that I have not been able to treat it as it deserves, the importance of the period, from 1793 to 1806, appears to me to be such, that, among the materials for a future historian, a Whig view of Mr. Fox's career during that time ought to find a place. Lord Stanhope has given to the world a very interesting "Life of Pitt," and has placed before us all that can be said in favour of the policy of that statesman, in no unfair or uncandid spirit towards his opponents. Among other materials for history and biography, the following works may be mentioned: - "Memoires tires des Papiers d'un Homme d'Etat," 13 volumes. This work is chiefly by Armand Francois d'Allonville, Count d'Allonville. He was, however, greatly assisted by M. Beauchamp and M. Schubert, who are said to have compiled, jointly or separately, volumes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10, of the series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Charles James Fox, Vol. 2 Although Lord Shelburne resigned on the 24th of February, it was not till the 2nd of April that the Coalition Ministry was admitted to office. The delay was almost entirely occasioned by the repugnance evinced by the King to submit to the rule of the Whig party. Meeting Lord North's father, Lord Guildford, who was Chamberlain to the Queen, the King said to him: "Did I ever think, my Lord Guildford, that Lord North would have delivered me up in this manner to Mr. Fox?" Lord Guildford replied, that he was sure it was not Lord North's intention to do what was disagreeable to his Majesty, but he understood his Majesty had got over any difficulty on that head by his sanction of the interview between Mr. Fox and Mr. Pitt. It is said that the Lord Advocate advised that Mr. Pitt should be made Prime Minister; and that, on the morning of the 27th of February, Mr. Pitt had consented for a short time to stand on that perilous eminence. If this account was true, bis boldness was but for a moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Edmund Burke Volume I written by F. P Lock and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Burke (1730-1797) was one of the most profound, versatile, and accomplished thinkers of the eighteenth century. Born and educated in Dublin, he moved to London to study law, but remained to make a career in English politics, completing A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757) before entering the political arena. A Member of Parliament for nearly thirty years, his speeches are still read and studied as classics of political thought, and through his best-known work, Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790) he has continued to exercise a posthumous influence as `the father of conservatism'. This is the first full, scholarly biography of Burke for over a generation, to be completed in two volumes. The first volume covers the years between 1730-1784, and describes his Irish upbringing and education, early writing, and his parliamentary career throughout the momentous years of the American War of Independence. Lavishly illustrated, it provides an authoritative account of the complexity and breadth of Burke's philosophical and political writing and examines its origins in his personal experiences and the political world of his day. This outstanding book will be be required reading for anybody seeking a fuller understanding of eighteenth-century history, philosophy, and political thought.
