Beckford left his property to his surviving daughter, Susan Euphemia, wife of Alexander, tenth Duke of Hamilton; and, though his books and pictures have been dispersed, his correspondence and papers have been preserved in the Charter Room of Hamilton Palace. The late William Beckford of Fonthill Giffard, Wilts, and afterwards of Bath, was born at the former place, September 29th, 1759. His mother was the second wife of the member in parliament for the city for fourteen years preceding, and twice Lord Mayor. She was daughter and coheir of the Hon. George Hamilton, M.P. for Wells. Young Beckford was christened early, the year following his birth, as appears by the following letter from his father to Mr. Pitt, afterwards Earl of Chatham. "Fonthill, January 7th, 1760. "my Dear Sir, "Your very obliging and much-esteemed favour was duly received. I consider it the greatest honor to have such a sponsor to my child. He was made a Christian last night, and Lord Effingham was your proxy. No endeavours of mine shall be wanting (if it please God to spare his life), to instil into his mind principles of religion, honor, and love of country. It is true those are old-fashioned principles; but they are such as you approve and practise. "Nothing could give me more pleasure than to take your opinion on my present works, and to regulate my future operations by your advice and judgment. But I cannot flatter myself so much as to think it possible to enjoy that comfort, until you have first procured for your country a safe, honorable, and lasting peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Episodes of Vathek When I was collecting documents for "The Life and Letters of William Beckford, of Fonthill," I was so fortunate as to obtain permission from the Duke of Hamilton, a collateral descendant of the author of "Vathek," to examine the Beckford papers preserved at Hamilton Palace. In the two large chests containing these papers (never before examined by any literary man) I found, besides much important material for the biography, some large bundles of manuscripts. These manuscripts, written in French, were the unpublished Episodes of Beckford's famous Oriental tale, "Vathek," which were supposed to have been lost. Whatever value may be set upon the Episodes, there can be no doubt that the discovery, or rather recovery, of them was peculiarly interesting; and I regarded myself as fortunate when the Duke of Hamilton generously acceded to my request to be allowed to introduce them to the public. The two shorter stories have been printed in the original French in The English Review (December 1909; August, September 1910); and now for the first time the three Episodes appear in an English translation by Sir Frank T. Marzials, C.B. To the Duke of Hamilton I am deeply indebted for permission to publish the tales; and I am not less the debtor of Sir Frank T.
