Book The Life and Letters of St Teresa Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life and Letters of St Teresa Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry James Coleridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 2 The long delay which has ensued between the publication of this volume and that of its predecessor, has not been owing to any abandonment of the design of the complete work, but mainly to an attempt to make the translation of the Letters of St. Teresa as perfect as possible, and to arrange them in such a manner as not to interfere too much with the onward progress of the narrative of her Life. But, after all, they cannot be used for this purpose as much as could be wished, and it has been found impossible to persevere with the original design of publishing all the letters in English. Such a plan would have involved the extension of the work to four or five volumes. It is with much regret that the design has been given up, and the plan followed in the present volume adopted in its place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 3 Few words are needed to introduce the present volume, the last of a work which has cost more labour than appears on the surface, carried on through a number of years during which the writer has always had other matters of importance to occupy his time. The work, however, is now complete, as far as it is within his power to make it so, and if it reveals the character of St. Teresa to others as it has revealed it to her biographer, it will abundantly repay the labour that it has cost In a work begun several years ago, and carried on in the manner in which alone it has been possible to accomplish this, there will of necessity be found many small inaccuracies and mistakes which, it may be hoped, will be thought venial. Download or read book The Life and Letters of St Teresa Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Henry James Coleridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 1 The design of the biography of St. Teresa which is now submitted to the reader, is the same as that of the Life and Letters of St. Francis Xavier, which has now been for several years before the public. There are certain of the saints of God of whom that is pre-eminently true, which is true in a certain measure of all those whose lives and characters are such as to present interesting subjects to the student - that is, that they are but imperfectly understood unless their own letters, as well as their more formal works, are largely used by their biographers. The great typical instance of such a Saint is St. Paul himself. Nothing but a deep and familiar acquaintance with his Epistles can qualify any writer to give a fair and full account of his mind and character. It is the same with a number of other saints, of whose letters we happily possess large numbers. But the kind of biography which may thus be produced is as yet wanting in the case of most of these saints, and its composition involves great labour and requires singular judgment. Book Life and Letters of Rev Mother Teresa Dease

Download or read book Life and Letters of Rev Mother Teresa Dease written by Mary Teresa Dease and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Rev. Mother Teresa Dease: Foundress and Superior General of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in America On the fifth of November, 1686, Sir Thomas Gascoigne, an English gentleman, purchased a house and garden at a place called Micklegate-Bar, in Yorkshire, and deeded it to a select religious community of English ladies established in the City of Munich, Bavaria. Some of the members were voluntary exiles who had left England during the turbulent reign of James I and entered the Community that they might in peace and security, answer the call of their Divine Master to a life of prayer and contemplation. The foundress of this Community was the illustrious Mary Ward, an English lady, intimately associated by birth with many of the great Catholic families of Yorkshire, England. She was born on the twenty-fifth of January, 1583, in Yorkshire, and, during the dark days following the apostasy of Henry VIII, lived with her parents in Paris, France. Here, in the twenty-fourth year of her age, she founded her Community and opened at St. Omer, 1609, a select school for young ladies. The Community increased in numbers, and in time was able to answer appeals to open schools in Bavaria, Flanders, Austria and Italy. In 1642, the saintly Mary Ward visited Heworth, England, where she died on the twenty-third of January, 1645. Book The Collected Letters of St Teresa of Avila vol 2 1578 1582

Download or read book The Collected Letters of St Teresa of Avila vol 2 1578 1582 written by Teresa of Avila and published by ICS Publications. This book was released on 2011-09-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains Letters from 1578 to 1582 Includes Biographical Sketches and Sources for the Biographical Sketches. This second and final volume of St. Teresa's correspondence begins with the year 1578, a most troubling time for Teresa. A keen observer of the reality around her as well as within, Teresa in these letters focuses light on many of the struggles in both the Carmelite order and the church of sixteenth-century Spain. She introduces us to major personalities who have left their mark on history. Through her letters historians gain a better knowledge of the chronology of events in Teresa's life and how she related to the diverse people she had dealings with. A number of everyday particulars that compilers and editors of those times considered unimportant are today prized. Her worries, her troubles and triumphs, her expressions of sadness and joy, are all present here. With a compelling spontaneity, these letters disclose a Teresa in a complex variety of circumstances. The extraordinary gifts of grace bestowed by God on this Spanish Madre fortified her for a demanding ministry of service which entailed heavy responsibilities and that drew her contemplative soul into a whirl of activities. Because of the limited means of travel and communication in the sixteenth century, the organization of a reform like hers, with its unavoidable business matters, had to be dealt with chiefly through correspondence, a chafing duty that became one of Teresa's greatest trials. She often repeated that letter-writing was her biggest burden, a wearisome task that cost her more than all the miserable roads and bad weather experienced on her journeys through Spain. With its endnotes, biographical sketches, and above all, fresh translation, this second volume of Teresa's Collected Letters opens again another door into the fascinating world of this saint, one of the greatest women history has known.
