Download or read book The Life and Labours of George Washington Walker of Hobart Town Tasmania Classic Reprint written by James Backhouse and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Labours of George Washington Walker, of Hobart Town, Tasmania This volume if offered to the Reader under the conviction that there is in the Life and Labours of the late George Washington Walker much to interest and instruct the young, as well as to animate the Christian disciple in every period of life. Believing that his character and example would be better brought out by his own records than by any other means, the Editors have done little more than make selections from his papers, which consist chiefly of letters, and a journal kept during his travels with James Backhouse in the Southern Hemisphere. In perusing the volume it will be well to keep in remembrance, that as Or. W. Walker was born in 1800, his age runs parallel with the year. It must also be observed that great changes have taken place both in the Australian Colonies and in South Africa since he travelled there. At that time Tasmania was usually called Van Diemens Land, and was a dependency of New South Wales, with a Lieutenant Governor. Book New Perspectives on the History of Gender and Empire

Download or read book New Perspectives on the History of Gender and Empire written by Ulrike Lindner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Perspectives on the History of Gender and Empire, an open access book, extends our understanding of the gendered workings of empires, colonialism and imperialism, taking up recent impulses from gender history, new imperial history and global history. The authors apply new theoretical and methodological approaches to historical case studies around the globe in order to redefine the complex relationship between gender and empire. The chapters deal not only with 'typical' colonial empires like the British Empire, but also with those less well-studied, such as the German, Russian, Italian and U.S. empires. They focus on various imperial formations, from colonies in Africa or Asia to settler colonial settings like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, to imperial peripheries like the Dodecanese or the Black Sea Steppe. The book deals with key themes such as intimacy, sexuality and female education, as well as exploring new aspects like the complex marriage regimes some empires developed or the so-called 'servant debates'. It also presents several ways in which imperial formations were structured by gender and other categories like race, class, caste, sexuality, religion, and citizenship. Offering new reflections on the intimate and personal aspects of gender in imperial activities and relationships, this is an important volume for students and scholars of gender studies and imperial and colonial history. Book Ballycurragh to Tasmania 1649 1868 Grey Family and Innes Clan Volume Two

Download or read book Ballycurragh to Tasmania 1649 1868 Grey Family and Innes Clan Volume Two written by Ian Broinowski and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a narrative about three Gray families and their new lives in their chosen home of Van Diemen's Land in the late 1830s and the reasons which propelled each one into such a momentous change. However, their family journey originated centuries before in Ireland during the tumultuous English Civil War when their ancestor Lt Colonel John Grey stepped ashore at Ringsend, Dublin as part of Cromwell's Army on the 15th August 1649. Their story embraces just about all of our human emotions, through the quest for a better life, not only for themselves but for their children and future generations. In essence, like most emigrants, this was their primary motivation although compelling events such as war, economic and social challenges beyond the individual were also at play. The Greys were no different from thousands of other families who chose to travel to Australia and by exploring their lives, experiences and destinies we can learn just a little more about life in early colonial Tasmania.

Book excerpt: Long popular with a general readership, travel writing has, in the past three decades or so, become firmly established as an object of serious and multi-disciplinary academic inquiry. Few of the scholarly and popular publications that have focused on the nineteenth century have regarded the century as a whole. This broad volume examines the cultural and social aspects of travel writing on Africa, Asia, America, the Balkans and Australasia.
