Book The Life and Letters of William Sharp and Fiona Macleod Volume 1 1855 1894

Download or read book The Life and Letters of William Sharp and Fiona Macleod Volume 1 1855 1894 written by William F. Halloran and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Sharp (1855-1905) conducted one of the most audacious literary deceptions of his or any time. Sharp was a Scottish poet, novelist, biographer and editor who in 1893 began to write critically and commercially successful books under the name Fiona Macleod. This was far more than just a pseudonym: he corresponded as Macleod, enlisting his sister to provide the handwriting and address, and for more than a decade "Fiona Macleod" duped not only the general public but such literary luminaries as William Butler Yeats and, in America, E. C. Stedman. Sharp wrote "I feel another self within me now more than ever; it is as if I were possessed by a spirit who must speak out". This three-volume collection brings together Sharp’s own correspondence – a fascinating trove in its own right, by a Victorian man of letters who was on intimate terms with writers including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Walter Pater, and George Meredith – and the Fiona Macleod letters, which bring to life Sharp’s intriguing "second self". With an introduction and detailed notes by William F. Halloran, this richly rewarding collection offers a wonderful insight into the literary landscape of the time, while also investigating a strange and underappreciated phenomenon of late-nineteenth-century English literature. It is essential for scholars of the period, and it is an illuminating read for anyone interested in authorship and identity.

Book The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham Volume 1

Download or read book The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham Volume 1 written by Jeremy Bentham and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first five volumes of the Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham contain over 1,300 letters written both to and from Bentham over a 50-year period, beginning in 1752 (aged three) with his earliest surviving letter to his grandmother, and ending in 1797 with correspondence concerning his attempts to set up a national scheme for the provision of poor relief. Against the background of the debates on the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, to which he made significant contributions, Bentham worked first on producing a complete penal code, which involved him in detailed explorations of fundamental legal ideas, and then on his panopticon prison scheme. Despite developing a host of original and ground-breaking ideas, contained in a mass of manuscripts, he published little during these years, and remained, at the close of this period, a relatively obscure individual. Nevertheless, these volumes reveal how the foundations were laid for the remarkable rise of Benthamite utilitarianism in the early nineteenth century. Bentham’s early life is marked by his extraordinary precociousness, but also family tragedy: by the age of 10 he had lost five infant siblings and his mother. The letters in this volume document his difficult relationship with his father and his increasing attachment to his surviving younger brother Samuel, his education, his interest in chemistry and botany, and his committing himself to a life of philosophy and legal reform.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Correspondence of Theodore Parker, Vol. 1 of 2: Minister of the Twenty-Eighth Congregational Society, Boston Besides the collection which I have called. The Journal, there are several little pocket note-books out of which something has been gleaned, principally from those which he used during his last journeyings. But the few passages that are found in a con dition to print appear as from The Journal. Wherever a citation occurs from his printed works, it is made from the only uniform American edition that has appeared. Many of the foot-notes would be trivial or superfluous except for the English and foreign reader, for whose benefit they were inserted. It is difficult to anticipate where a foreign reader might need a note or explanation sometimes I may have exceeded, sometimes fallen short of, the natural requisition. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence of John Foster, Vol. 1 of 2 I'r will gratify the readers of these volumes to find that the Memoir is chiefly compiled from Mr. Foster's Letters; so numerous, happily, are the references to himself and the subjects in which he toolc the deepest interest, that little more than a proper selection and arrangement has been requisite, in order to form them into a continuous narrative. A biography drawn from such sources will be found, probably, to present a more vivid and truthful exhibition of character, than even a record, by a self-observer, however faithfully intended, if composed after the lapse of years, when the events, and the emotions they called forth, have begun to fade upon the memory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence, Vol. 1 of 2: Of Sir Bartle Frere, Bart I have always felt, that of those who wrote and spoke most strongly against the course I had taken in South Africa, some did so in blind reliance on party leaders, and all from very imperfect knowledge of facts, and I felt sure that in time, though not perhaps in my time, my country men here would do me the same justice as they who live in South Africa have done me from the first. Thus Sir Bartle Frere wrote to a friend about a year before his death. To do him this justice, nothing but a plain statement of facts is needed. That such a statement was not and could not be made in his lifetime is due to several causes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren

Download or read book Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren written by Cleanth Brooks and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James A. Grimshaw, Jr., brings together for the first time more than 350 letters exchanged by two scholars who altered the way literature is taught in this country. The selected letters focus on the development of their five major textbooks--the rationale for selections, the details involved in obtaining permissions and preparing indexes, and the demands of meeting deadlines. More important, these letters reveal their attitudes toward literature, teaching, and scholarship. Providing insight into two of the most influential literary minds of this century, these letters show two men who were deeply involved in research and writing, and who were committed to a life of travel, conversation, and learning. Their zest for life and their love of literature explain, in part, their uncanny ability to persevere and to succeed. Yet their human qualities are also present in the letters, which bring Brooks and Warren to life as rare individuals able to sustain a deep, lifelong friendship. Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren will help readers better understand the critical work of Brooks and the creative work of Warren. Students and teachers of American literature will find this book indispensable.
