"He stood alone, --beneath the deep dark shade Of the Australian forest, where the trees, A century old the youngest of them, made HoUow and mournful music in the breeze." Onr day when I was indulging in these meditations, and gazing round from my Robinson Crusoe hut upon the surface of the waters, I thought I heard the sound of human voices; and, on looking up, was somewhat startled at seeing three natives standing on the high land immediately above me. They were armed with spears, and had opossum skins thrown over their shoulders, partially covering their bodies. Standing as they did, (c)n au elevated position, armed too, and being myself C totally defenceless, I confess I felt alarmed; so that hoping I had not been seen, I crept into a crevice in a rock near at hand, where I endeavoured to conceal myself. They were however soon upon my track, and shouting what I considered to be a call for me to come out, I resolved to do so; indeed I could not have remained there long on account of the water. With but faint hopes of meeting with good treatment at their hands, I crawled out from my shelter, and surrendered at discretion. They gazed on me with wonder: my size probably attracting their attention. After seizing both my hands, they struck their breasts, and mine also, making at the same time a noise between singing and crying: a sort of.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced by Tim Flannery At 2.00 PM on Sunday, 6 July 1835, a giant of a man shambled into the camp left by John Batman at Indented Head near Geelong . he was six foot five and seven-eighths inches tall (198cm) in his bare feet. Though clearly a European, and "well proportioned with an erect military gait" the visitor spoke not a word of English. Instead, he pointed to a tattoo on his arm, which bore the initials WB alongside crudely executed figures of the sun, moon and a possum-like creature. Then, when he was given a slice from a loaf, the word "bread" broke suddenly-almost involuntarily-from his lips. 'Over the following weeks fragments of this stranger's history were revealed. His name, he said, was William Buckley, and he had been living with the Aborigines for so long he had lost track of time. What he told of his life in the wilds of Victoria so amazed those who heard him that he soon became celebrated as "the wild white man" From Tim Flannery's introduction

Book Frontiers of Taste

Download or read book Frontiers of Taste written by Zane Ma Rhea and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical, multiperspective, sociohistorical analysis of the role of food in postcolonial Indigenous, British and French settler relations. Drawing on archival resources from Australian explorers, settlers and nation builders, the book argues that contemporary issues of food security, sovereignty and sustainability have been significantly shaped by the colonial impact on human foodways. The author goes on to enhance readers’ understanding of how contact between inhabitants and newcomers was shaped and informed by food, and how these engagements established a modus vivendi that carries through to the present day. Based on the assessment of archival records, it uses a comparative, socio-historical lens to investigate contact between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people where the exchange of food or knowledge about food took place. It finds that the transfer of food and food knowledge was multifaceted, and the flow of food knowledge occurred in both directions, although these exchanges were neither symmetrical nor balanced. It also analyzes and discusses food as a focal point of activity. The final chapter offers an assessment of the potential for the development of a sustainable, nutritious, tasty Australian cuisine that moves beyond the tropes and stereotypical narratives embedded into colonial Indigenous-settler relations in the context of food. If this was accepted by all Australians, it would allow opportunities to be created for Indigenous Australians to develop food products for the market that are sustainable, economically viable and developed in ways that are culturally appropriate.
