Book The Lichen Genus Cladonia in North America

Download or read book The Lichen Genus Cladonia in North America written by John W. Thomson and published by Heritage. This book was released on 1967-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lichen genus Cladonia includes some of the very common ground cover plants in the United States and Canada. Before the compiling of this volume, the published results of research carried out with respect to this lichen genus were widely scattered, in many different languages, and often very difficult to locate or translate. This manual is an extensive compilation of the available information necessary for the identification of the members of Cladonia in North America. The compendium includes a section on the recently developed microchemical approach to the taxonomy of the group, and in order to illustrate the microchemistry of the genus a new series of photographs was taken especially for the book. One of the most important components of the volume is the key. Until now, no such key embodying the recent concepts of the taxonomy of the genus and incorporating all the North American species has been available, although there have been excellent regional keys. As a working key and manual to the lichen genus Cladonia on the American continent north of Mexico, this study will be a valuable aid to professional lichenologists, botanists, mycologists, plant ecologists, plant ecologists and naturalists.

Book Images from Lichenes Australasici Exsiccati and of other characteristic Australasian Lichens Volume Two

Download or read book Images from Lichenes Australasici Exsiccati and of other characteristic Australasian Lichens Volume Two written by Felix, Elix, John A. Schumm and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes photographs of a selection of typical Australasianlichens, many of which have been distributed in the LICHENES AUS-TRALASICI EXSICCATI (issued by J.A. Elix 1982-1994) as well as someadditional species. In addition to the overall images, photographs ofselected stained and unstained sections, spores and HPTLC-plates areincluded. The goal was to make images of these lichenological treas-ures available to a wider circle of interested people. We hope that theimages will complement the literature and aid in the determination ofAustralasian lichen species.

Book Lichens of Antarctica and South Georgia

Download or read book Lichens of Antarctica and South Georgia written by D. O. Øvstedal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antarctica's severe climate and restricted area of ice-free habitats limit the biodiversity and biota of its terrestrial ecosystems. Throughout much of this wilderness, lichens are the predominant visible life form, yet relatively few descriptive accounts of Antarctic lichens have been published. Research on these enigmatic organisms is increasing rapidly and there is a growing need for a comprehensive guide to the identification of Antarctic lichen-forming fungi. This volume provides the first modern detailed compilation of their taxonomy, ecology, distribution and relevant published literature. As such, it represents a major contribution to global lichen taxonomy and biogeography. The systematic accounts provide sufficient descriptive information to allow specialists to identify taxa to species level, and are structured so that even non-specialists can use them to identify specimens to at least the generic level.

Book Key to the Genera of Australian Macrolichens

Download or read book Key to the Genera of Australian Macrolichens written by Patrick M. McCarthy and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macrolichens are not necessarily large lichens. Instead, the term has been used traditionally for lichens other than crustose types, i.e. scaly, leafy or shrubby lichens, usually with discrete organs of attachment to the substratum; in other words, distinctly three-dimensional, in contrast to their closely appressed or immersed, two-dimensional relatives. This key to the genera of Australian macrolichens follows recently published guides to apothecial crusts and pyrenocarps. It covers all 135 genera of macrolichens known to occur in Australia, and illustrates two-thirds of them in full color. To ease identification, it uses mostly traits that are visible with the naked eye or a 10× hand lens, and for all genera it adds information on habitat, distribution within Australia, and literature references.
