Volk's Century Magazine Article When Mr. Lincoln was sitting at his Office table writing and had paused, seeming to be meditating Of what he should write, he usually placed his left elbow on the table, his chin on his thumb, with the index finger as described above, and the three other fingers closed on the palm of the hand, thus with his thumb partly supporting the chin that rested in his large hand. I have seen him, in the privacy of the Office, maintain this position as immovable as a statue for more than half an hour, though generally less time, if not writing, but while hewas listening to some one addressing him on a subject he was, deeply interested in. Mr. Volk was correct in saying there was a foot's difference in the height of Senator Douglas and Mr. Lincoln. The latter's height was, however, more than six feet one inch, as Volk says. Mr. Lincoln was six feet four inches, and Douglas', height was certainly not less than five feet four inches, instead of five feet one inch, as Volk gives it. The Little Giant was always [sensitive about any reflections regarding his height and Volk's taking three inches from his crown must not remain uncorrected.
