Book The Lens Within the Heart

Download or read book The Lens Within the Heart written by Timon Screech and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a revised edition with a new preface of this important work, previously available only in hardback. It has long been assumed that Japan's closed country policy meant that Japan was isolated from the influence of the outside, and in particular the Western, world. However, this study of 18th century Japan, using sources wholly unstudied since their writing, reveals the profound influence that the introduction of Western technology and scientific instruments including glass, lenses and mirrors had on Japanese notions of sight, and how this change in perception was reflected most clearly in popular culture. Screech goes to the core of later eighteenth century thought through popular objects and the propositions which many considered groundbreaking on the book's first publication in 1996 have yet to be substantially challenged.

Book The Western Scientific Gaze and Popular Imagery in Later Edo Japan

Download or read book The Western Scientific Gaze and Popular Imagery in Later Edo Japan written by Timon Screech and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study to consider the introduction of Western technology in the eighteenth century, when, it has been assumed, Japan continued to isolate itself from external influence. Timon Screech demonstrates that the introduction of such Western equipment as lenses, mirrors, and glass had a profound impact on Japanese notions regarding the faculty of sight. The enormity of this paradigm shift was, moreover, felt less in Japanese scientific inquiry than in art and popular culture, where the devices were often depicted and used metaphorically, as commentary on the prevailing social norms. Based on archival sources, here published for the first time, this study also sheds new light on Japanese art and its relation to the West; the relationship of science to art and popular culture; and the autonomy and internationalisation of Japanese culture.

Book The Geology of the Modern Cancer Epidemic

Download or read book The Geology of the Modern Cancer Epidemic written by Tai Lahans and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancers are on the rise across the world. Except for viral-based cancers, overall cancers are diseases that may be preventable. This book looks at the many levels of determined, probable, and possible causation for several common cancers. These causes include realities found in culture, anthropology, sociology, politics, the environment, agriculture and food, beliefs, and the modern lifestyle. These realities are filtered through the perennial science of Chinese medicine — an ecological system of knowing and understanding the human body as it relates to the world around us. The book covers lung, colorectal, breast, prostate, and virally-caused cancers. It interweaves conventional medical knowledge of these cancers with modern realities of everyday life we all live, and with Chinese medicine interpretations and strategies for treating probable pre-cancerous conditions. This makes it a book that is useful for the practitioner of Chinese medicine. It is also useful for the patient suffering a cancer diagnosis in terms of survivorship and for other medical practitioners who wish to understand how integrated care for cancerous diseases and conditions may relate to Chinese medicine and prevention. The final chapters of the book are dedicated to finding answers for a cure for cancer through making connections between how we live, what we believe, the environment we are creating based on those beliefs, and the social and political mechanisms we now have in place that keep us from change and, therefore, from the cure for cancer. Book The Heart of the Photograph

Download or read book The Heart of the Photograph written by David Duchemin and published by Rocky Nook, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:

Learn to ask better, more helpful questions of your work so that you can create stronger and more powerful photographs.

Photographers often look at an image—one they’ve either already created or are in the process of making—and ask themselves a simple question: “Is this a good photograph?” It’s an understandable question, but it’s really not very helpful. How are you supposed to answer that? What does “good” even mean? Is it the same for everyone?

What if you were equipped to ask better, more constructive questions of your work so that you could think more intentionally and creatively, and in doing so, bring more specific action and vision to the act of creating photographs? What if asking stronger questions allowed you to establish a more effective approach to your image-making? In The Heart of the Photograph: 100 Questions for Making Stronger, More Expressive Photographs, photographer and author David duChemin helps you learn to ask better questions of your work in order to craft more successful photographs—photographs that express and connect, photographs that are strong and, above all, photographs that are truly yours.

From the big-picture questions—What do I want this image to accomplish?—to the more detail-oriented questions that help you get there—What is the light doing? Where do the lines lead? What can I do about it?—David walks you through his thought process so that you can establish your own. Along the way, he discusses the building blocks from which compelling photographs are made, such as gesture, balance, scale, contrast, perspective, story, memory, symbolism, and much more. The Heart of the Photograph is not a theoretical book. It is a practical and useful book that equips you to think more intentionally as a photographer and empowers you to ask more helpful questions of you and your work, so that you can produce images that are not only better than “good,” but as powerful and authentic as you hope them to be.

Book The Broken Heart of America

Download or read book The Broken Heart of America written by Walter Johnson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing portrait of the racial dynamics that lie inescapably at the heart of our nation, told through the turbulent history of the city of St. Louis. From Lewis and Clark's 1804 expedition to the 2014 uprising in Ferguson, American history has been made in St. Louis. And as Walter Johnson shows in this searing book, the city exemplifies how imperialism, racism, and capitalism have persistently entwined to corrupt the nation's past. St. Louis was a staging post for Indian removal and imperial expansion, and its wealth grew on the backs of its poor black residents, from slavery through redlining and urban renewal. But it was once also America's most radical city, home to anti-capitalist immigrants, the Civil War's first general emancipation, and the nation's first general strike—a legacy of resistance that endures. A blistering history of a city's rise and decline, The Broken Heart of America will forever change how we think about the United States.

His colleagues present the energy of the heart in the safety of a scientific context that invites us again and again to move beyond it." -- Gary Zukav, author The Seat of the Soul and The Dancing Wu Li Masters Heart Intelligence, Connecting with the Intuitive Guidance of the Heart provides readers with a new, high definition picture of the energetic heart as a unifying, creative, intuitive intelligence that we can learn to draw on for moment to moment guidance. Heart Intelligence links the physical heart to the spiritual (energetic) heart. Through its extensive communication with the brain and body, the heart is intimately involved in how we think, feel, and respond to the world. Expanding on their breakthrough book, The HeartMath Solution, the authors offer heart-based techniques and guidelines for living from the heart, which connects the puzzle pieces of our purpose and fulfillment. The book provides information and simple practices for accessing our heart's intuitive guidance to connect with our highest choices for better outcomes. Our choices are especially important through these changing times because they constantly create or disrupt our peace, happiness and self-security. Our thoughts and feelings influence the chemistry that regulates much of our health -- how we feel, for better or worse. Our thoughts, feelings, emotions and attitudes are just frequencies that we can learn to change -- once we put our heart into our intention. Heart Intelligence provides practices to replace fear with the attitude of intelligent concern (managed concern) which leaves us in charge and more attuned to intuitive direction. We learn the benefits of practicing simple coherence techniques a few times a day for boosting resilience and emotional balance; making appropriate choices; and clearing our mind from anxiety or overwhelm when needed. It is through deepening our heart intelligence, coherence and connection that humanity will be able to shift from separation to cooperation resulting in higher solutions to our personal and global problems

Book excerpt: "Taking its name from a line in the Wallace Stevens' poem "The Gray Room," Alec Soth's latest book is a lyrical exploration of the limitations of photographic representation. While these large-format color photographs are made all over the world, they aren't about any particular place or population. By a process of intimate and often extended engagement, Soth's portraits and images of his subject's surroundings involve an enquiry into the extent to which a photographic likeness can depict more than the outer surface of an individual, and perhaps even plumb the depths of something unknowable about both the sitter and the photographer"--The publisher.

Book Mystery of Relationships through the Lens of Scriptures

Download or read book Mystery of Relationships through the Lens of Scriptures written by Dr. Elizabeth Thambiraj and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Struggles in our relationships often point to an issue only God knows. The mountains and valleys we face regarding relationships are often tiny spots to God. We can trust God because He is faithful. By trusting in His promises and understanding His unconditional love for us, it is possible to scale the unscalable and repair our relationships. Over the years, marriage has changed. In her book Mystery of Relationship through the Lens of Scriptures: Marriage, Sex, and Intimacy, author Dr. Elizabeth Thambiraj explains those changes and the strains put on marital relationships. Despite difficulties, Elizabeth Thambiraj shows how the marriage covenant can be maintained through God. She points us to the happiness, security, self-worth, and confidence available from our Maker. You’ll be reminded that fear, lust, and jealousy are not part of true love. The author also reminds us that to love someone unconditionally means to love the other person in the past, present, and in the future, even when the person disagrees with your opinion. On marriage she has given one of the most biblically insightful explanations of the drastic change in the marriage relationship that resulted from the Fall at Eden, and provides excellent guidance on ways that the marriage covenant can be maintained through feeding our better angels with forgiveness, understanding, patience and forbearance. If we feed our lustful tendencies, we have committed adultery long before the physical act itself.—Dr. Jerry L. Ogles, Presiding Bishop, Anglican Orthodox Church, Anglican Orthodox Communion Worldwide
