Book excerpt: "Because Black students continue to face significant academic and financial challenges in their attempt to receive higher education in America, their home country, Dr. John Fleming felt that there was a pressing need to re-publish the 1976 edition of his book, The Lengthening Shadow of Slavery: A Historical Justification for Affirmative Action for Blacks in Higher Education with a new 2023 edition entitled The Lengthening Shadow of Slavery: Fifty-Year Reprise of the Historical Justification for Affirmative Action for African Americans in U.S. Higher Education. Dr. Fleming strongly felt that it was necessary to explore, yet again, why the U.S.'s own African-American students receive the worst educational outcomes at all levels of the American education pipeline while foreign students who major in STEM fields at U.S. colleges and universities get the best education money can buy. On the face of it this is not an easy question to answer; but it is certainly a question that deserves an answer, e.g., an answer that looks across the landscape of the many issues that have confronted Black families in the U.S. since their Emancipation from slavery as they have persevered in their struggles to educate themselves and their children; but have often failed to do so through no fault of their own. Based on the issues explored in the original 1976 edition of the Lengthening Shadow of Slavery, it is clear that despite the extraordinary and often dangerous efforts of Black freedmen to secure quality education for themselves and their children after their emancipation from chattel slavery in 1865, African Americans still confront an appalling lack of quality in the education their children receive at the elementary and secondary levels in high poverty urban schools which all too frequently fail to meet the quality standards which are common in suburban schools in America in 2023— over one hundred and fifty years after emancipation. The in-depth analysis examining U.S. elementary and secondary education undertaken by Dr. Barbara Fleming in Volume I of Desperately Searching for Higher Education among the Ruins of the Great Society ©2022 examined standardized test scores by race/ethnic group on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), i.e., the nation's report card; and two other international standardized test measures (the PISA and the TIMSS) used to assess American elementary and secondary school students. Dr. Fleming's results revealed that despite the landmark 1954 Supreme Court Decision in Brown v. Board of Education which outlawed segregation in public education in America, it is clear that in 2023 the U.S. is still operating two national school systems— One for wealthy suburban students who are predominantly White and one for poor students who are predominantly Black and minority; and that to use the Supreme Court's language in the 1954 Brown v. Board decision, these schools systems are 'inherently unequal' in both their educational procedures and outcomes." --

My concern is on a break among the generations that runs deeper than the normal trends of the younger generations being technologically savvy and the more mature generations talking about the aEURoeold days.aEUR We look at the greatest generation that faced the Great Depression as children then World War II as young adults. We look at the baby boomers as they ushered in an era of a strong work ethic and resourcefulness. The Gen X expanded technology. The millennials show their street smarts and are avid consumers. Then we see how the Gen Z develops their social media consumption habits and how they are always wired. This writing is to construct a new generation for looking forward to a change in our present-day generations. I hope my perspective will bring about some insight as to why we, as a generation, have been disconnected and why it is important to reconnect with all generations. The discussions here are the causes of the generational divide and some methods on how to bridge the gap among the generations. In the early stage of any writing, I examine how Martin Luther King Jr. sought to bridge the gap between the races to bring about a more perfect union. My goal is to bridge the generational gap to bring about a more harmonious people. Now is the time for us to evaluate and reevaluate our focus toward the goal of recovering our connection with all generations.
