Book The Legend of Sir Perceval Vol 2

Download or read book The Legend of Sir Perceval Vol 2 written by Jessie L. Weston and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Legend of Sir Perceval, Vol. 2: Studies Upon Its Origin, Development, and Position, in the Arthurian Cycle In presenting this second volume of my Perceval Studies to my readers I feel that a few words of explanation as to the quite unexpected development of the subject are necessary. When I formed the project of editing the Modena Perceval it was with the underlying impression that, though the publication of the text was necessary in the interests of the criticism of the Perceval literature, yet that it was unlikely to furnish material for either a long or particularly interesting study. It is always the unexpected that happens: before I had been long at work I recognised that we had here most important evidence as to the nature of the sources utilised, evidence which threw an entirely new light on the question of the Borron authorship. Download or read book The Legend of Sir Perceval Studies Upon Its Origin Development and Position in the Arthurian Cycle Volume 1 written by Jessie Laidlay Weston and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... coutel ne vit hon tel que Dieu le fist non pas nature au manche avoit ceste escripture " In honore Sancte et individue Trinitatis."' He then ascended into heaven, leaving the impression of his foot on the stone. From that day onward, under the fostering care of the Dukes of Normandy, the abbey increased in wealth and prosperity. The poet concludes the legend with these words: 'je ay rudement dicte 1'ystoire mes fermement la devon croire que saintes gens 1'ont approuvee et miracles 1'ont confermee devant le sanc donc merchi crie tu qui ceu lis, et pour moy prie.' In the foregoing account there is one omission: the writer did not know what was the second relic enclosed in the fig-tree. From the Latin versions we learn that the blood which had dried on the wounds of Our Lord was removed by means of a knife: ' In ipsa tamen depositione Nichodemus ille qui, teste Evangelic, venerat ad Jhesum nocte, non minima accensus dilectione, sanguinem veri prophete Jhesu circa vulnera pedum et manuum et lateris refrigeratum suo abrasit cultello et in sua reposuit ciro-teca.'1 It was this knife which was concealed in the second tube placed in the fig-tree. The raison d'etre of the second knife, that brought by the angel, is not very clear. I am inclined to think it may have arisen from the details concerning the preservation of the first having dropped out of the story, while the writer was well aware of the fact that it existed side by side with the Saint Sang at Fescamp. Now to what date should this tradition be assigned? If we set on one side as legendary the miraculous introduction to the story recounting the various foundations of the present Abbey, there is solid historical evidence for the tradition of its foundation in its present form under...

Book Women Medievalists and the Academy Volume 2

Download or read book Women Medievalists and the Academy Volume 2 written by Jane Chance and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long overlooked in standard reference works, pioneering women medievalists finally receive their due in Women Medievalists and the Academy. This comprehensive edited volume brings to life a diverse collection of inspiring figures through memoirs, biographical essays, and interviews. Covering many different nationalities and academic disciplines—including literature, philology, history, archaeology, art history, theology or religious studies, and philosophy—each essay delves into one woman’s life, intellectual contributions, and efforts to succeed in a male-dominated field. Together, these extraordinary personal histories constitute a new standard reference that speaks to a growing interest in women’s roles in the development of scholarship and the academy. The collection begins in the eighteenth century with Elizabeth Elstob and continues to the present, and includes—among more than seventy profiles—such important figures as Anna Jameson, Lina Eckenstein, Georgiana Goddard King, Eileen Power, Dorothy L. Sayers, Dorothy Whitelock, Susan Mosher Stuard, Marcia Colish, and Caroline Walker Bynum, among others.

Book Goddess and Grail

Download or read book Goddess and Grail written by Jeffrey John Dixon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early chroniclers of Britain presented the island as the promised land of the Roman goddess Diana. Later, when the story of Arthur was transformed by Christian mythology, a new literary concept of the island was promoted: the promised land of the Holy Grail. As the feminine enchantment of the Goddess gave way to the masculine crusade of the Grail Quest, the otherworld realms of the fays or fairy women were denigrated in favor of the heavenly afterlife. The dualism of the medieval authors was challenged by modern writers such as Blake and Tolkien, as well as by the scholars of the Eranos conferences. This book explores the conflict between Goddess and Grail--a rift less about paganism versus Christianity than about religious literalism versus spiritual imagination--which is resolved in the figure of Sophia (Divine Wisdom).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named to Kirkus Reviews' Best Books of 2016 A Tale of the Last Knight of the Round Table Seven years after the death of Arthur Pendragon, Sir Percival, the last surviving knight of the Round Table, returns to Albion after a long and futile quest for the Holy Grail. The peaceful and prosperous home that he left a decade earlier is no more. Camelot has fallen, and much of the Pendragon’s kingdom has been subjugated by the evil Morgana and the Norse invaders who once served under her banner. Although the knight desires only to return to his ancestral lands and to live in peace, he vows to pursue one last quest before he rests—to find Guinevere, the Queen of the Britons. This journey will force the knight to travel the length and breadth of Albion, to overcome the most fearsome and cunning of enemies, and to embrace a past that is both painful and magnificent. The Return of Sir Percival is the tale of a knight who seeks peace, but finds only war, of a Queen who has borne sorrow and defeat, but who will not yield, and of a valiant people determined to cast of the yoke of their oppressors. It is also a tale of tragedy and triumph, and of romance lost and then found. The unique vision of the Arthurian world brought to life in S. Alexander O’Keefe’s The Return of Sir Percival takes readers on a journey that is as enthralling as it is memorable.

Book The Arthurian Legend

Download or read book The Arthurian Legend written by Margaret J. C. Reid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1938, this study explores the reception of the mythology of King Arthur by modern poets and playwrights. More specifically, the author explores the lineage of the legendary material since the first edition of Malory in 1485, exploring a vast range of artists who have made use of it: Spenser, Milton and Dryden, Wordsworth, Tennyson, Hardy, Matthew Arnold, and even Wagner. The conclusion is that although the myths have never occupied as central a place as the Classical or Biblical heritage, nonetheless the tales of King Arthur will continue to encapsulate romantic ideals and aspirations.

Book Sir Perceval of Galles and Ywain and Gawain

Download or read book Sir Perceval of Galles and Ywain and Gawain written by Mary Flowers Braswell and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 1995-10-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the only known English version of Chretien de Troyes's romance of the naive knight Perceval, Sir Perceval of Galles. The work uses Perceval's ridiculous behavior as a late medieval satire of courtliness. Accompanying this tale is Ywain and Gawain, a translation of a second Chretien poem, Le Chevalier au Lion. Unlike Sir Perceval, this poem extols the virtues of chivalry and honor. These complementary works form an excellent introduction to Middle English Arthurian romance, as they include editing, glosses, introductions, and a very helpful glossary for beginning students.
