This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Legal Rights, Liabilities and Duties of Women; With an Introductory History of Their Legal Condition in the Hebrew, Roman and Feudal Civil Systems The idea of the following work was suggested to me by ladies of distinguished intelligence and worth. So far as regards the plan, then, I may fairly claim to hold the sex responsible for its success. Not so, however, in respect to its very imperfect execution. The plan embraced more than could be brought within the limits of this volume; and it embraced a more suggestive and even a more practical form. It was intended to do, not only what has been done, but to have, also, some reflections on proposed amendments to existing laws, and some of the practical forms of business. The former, I have been obliged to limit to brief observations, scattered throughout the treatise, and the latter to omit altogether. There is room, however, on this subject, for another volume, and should this find favor with my intelligent countrywomen, it is intended to produce another, which shall be a sort of guide for them, in the every day business of life. The work as now published, consists of four parts. The first may be called, a History of the Civil Condition of Women. The second, is an Account of her Civil Eights, as a Citizen of the Republic. The third, gives the general principles of the Laws of Property, common to all citizens. The fourth contains the Eights, Liabilities and Duties of Women in the Domestic Relations. Of course, these subjects are briefly treated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Cloth. $150.* Published three years before the Seneca Falls Convention, this lay guide for women is probably the first ever published in the United States. It is infused with the spirit of early feminism. As Mansfield [1801-1880] states in the preface: "Rights, and the knowledge of rights are no longer hidden from the masses of men; and why should they be from women?" (6). The book has four parts. The first is a general history of woman's legal status from biblical times to the 1840s. The second is an account of the American woman's civil rights. The third reviews the laws of property common to both genders. The final section reviews the rights, liabilities and duties of women in domestic relations. Mansfield was a Connecticut lawyer who later moved to Cincinnati, where he became professor of constitutional law and history at Cincinnati College.

Book excerpt: A riveting narrative of the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment, an act which revolutionized the U.S. constitution and shaped the nation's destiny in the wake of the Civil War Though the end of the Civil War and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation inspired optimism for a new, happier reality for blacks, in truth the battle for equal rights was just beginning. Andrew Johnson, Lincoln's successor, argued that the federal government could not abolish slavery. In Johnson's America, there would be no black voting, no civil rights for blacks. When a handful of men and women rose to challenge Johnson, the stage was set for a bruising constitutional battle. Garrett Epps, a novelist and constitutional scholar, takes the reader inside the halls of the Thirty-ninth Congress to witness the dramatic story of the Fourteenth Amendment's creation. At the book's center are a cast of characters every bit as fascinating as the Founding Fathers. Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, among others, understood that only with the votes of freed blacks could the American Republic be saved. Democracy Reborn offers an engrossing account of a definitive turning point in our nation's history and the significant legislation that reclaimed the democratic ideal of equal rights for all U.S. citizens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an innovative, comparative approach to the study of women’s legal rights during a formative period of Anglo–American history. It traces how colonists transplanted English legal institutions to America, examines the remarkable depth of women’s legal knowledge and shows how the law increasingly undermined patriarchal relationships between parents and children, masters and servants, husbands and wives. The book will be of interest to scholars of Britain and colonial America, and to laypeople interested in how women in the past navigated and negotiated the structures of authority that governed them. It is packed with fascinating stories that women related to the courts in cases ranging from murder and abuse to debt and estate litigation. Ultimately, it makes a remarkable contribution to our understandings of law, power and gender in the early modern world.

Book Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa

Download or read book Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa written by Ruth A. Gallaher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa: An Historical Account of the Rights of Women IN the preparation of this monograph the writer has attempted to present a general survey of the status of women in Iowa by pointing out the distinctions between men and women which have been established by law or sanctioned by judicial rulings. The status of women with reference to activities which are not regulated either directly or indirectly by the government is outside the scope of this monograph and is not discussed in these pages. Thus the position of women in religious and other similar organizations has not been considered since this does not concern their status as citizens. Furthermore, all laws of a general nature applying equally to men and women have received only incidental mention, although such laws are Often of vital importance to women. In this class belong the laws concerning public utilities, protection of life and property, public health, and municipal administration. Unless otherwise specified or plainly inapplicable to both sexes, Iowa statute laws governing civil rights and obligations may be assumed to apply equally to men and women. Laws concerning political matters, on the contrary, refer to male citizens only unless women are specifically included. In some cases it has seemed advisable to include a brief discussion of certain aspects of the status of women which show little or no legal discrimination against women. Thus the admission of women to the public schools, to institutions of higher education, and to the professions has been discussed, although the Iowa laws show but little difference between men and women in such matters. There are two reasons for including these subjects: first, because such privileges are largely furnished at the expense of the State; and secondly, be cause the equality which has prevailed in Iowa is by no means general throughout the United States and ought not to be taken for granted. Teaching has been included for the same reasons, and also because the teacher in State supported schools is in one sense a public official. Book The Constitutional and Legal Rights of Women

Download or read book The Constitutional and Legal Rights of Women written by Judith A. Baer and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Constitutional and Legal Rights of Women: Cases in Law and Social Change is designed to provide undergraduate students with a comprehensive, sophisticated treatment of the legal status of all American women. Authors Baer and Goldstein skillfully blend doctrinal and political developments to document and explain the evolution of women's rights and the law - as well as the dynamics and dissension within the feminist movement. Building on Goldstein's previous editions, this book combines updated material on constitutional law, gender discrimination, and women's rights with new cases and readings on family law, gay rights, and criminal law. This edition takes a more socio-political and institutional approach than other books on women and the law. The authors consider issues such as institutional questions of constitutional interpretation, the scope of judicial power, the balance of federal-state power, the interaction between law and other social and political institutions, and the capacity of law to effect societal change. The inclusion of state and lower federal court decisions greatly strengthens the book's focus on the law's relationship to gendered inequality. equality, advances in reproductive technology law, divorce, child custody, education, same-sex marriage, pornography, and domestic violence. Special features include: a timetable of national women's rights cases and legal changes; readings that present opposing views on issues such as pornography, rape, and the battered woman syndrome; historical coverage; discussion questions following most cases; and a supplemental website.
