Download or read book The legacy of the Romans for Britain written by Katja Buthut and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-09-14 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Applied Geography, grade: 2, University of Bath (Department of European Studies and Modern Languages), course: Britain’s International History, language: English, abstract: I have never been to Rome. It must be strange for you, reading this statement of the author of an essay about Roman influence in Britain. But it’s true. And I have to face that fact even more often and be ashamed of what consequences it implies since I have come to Britain, and especially since I have come to Bath. Bath, the Roman City. Bath, the Roman Baths. Bath and the Romans. I feel like I have come to little Rome since I come here, really. It is everywhere and overwhelming, the still palpable presence of Roman life and culture today. I am very aware of the fact that the Roman Empire influenced not only Britain, but entire Europe. But the Romans never got so far as to conquer Berlin, so I never really got in touch with such an astounding presence still today. But the Romans did not have to really set a foot in a territory to make people feel their influence, even hundreds of years after the breakdown of the Roman Empire. Their influence is noticeable in almost every branch of human life, still today.

As we face the challenges of climate change, global competitiveness, biodiversity loss, energy needs, and dwindling food supplies, we ?nd ourselves in a period where both scienti?c literacy and the pool of next-generation scientists are dwindling. To solve these complex issues and maintain our own national security, we have to rebuild a national ethos based on sound science education for all, from which a new generation of scientists will emerge. The challenge is how to create this transformation. Those shaping national policy today, in 2009, need look no further than what worked a half-century ago. In1957,SputnikcircledandsentaclarioncallforAmericatobecometheworld’s most technologically advanced nation. In 1958, Congress passed the National Defense Education Act, which focused the national will and called for scholars and teachers to successfully educate our youth in science, math, and engineering. It was during this time period that Paul F. Brandwein emerged as a national science e- cation leader to lay the foundation for the changes needed in American education to create the future scientists essential to the nation’s well-being.
Download or read book Fenollosa s Legacy in Late Nineteenth Century Japan written by Hiroshi Nara and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-07-08 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fenollosa’s Legacy in Late Nineteenth Century Japan: An American Scholar’s Role in Resurrecting the Art of Japan makes a critical assessment of American art theorist Ernest F. Fenollosa’s work in Meiji Japan. Ernest F. Fenollosa was first hired as a Tokyo University professor of political philosophy in 1878 but became an art theorist and policymaker for Japan’s Education Ministry. His illustrious career as an art administrator began with the 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that cemented the reputation of his work. Working closely with Okakura Kakuzō (Tenshin), Fenollosa became the lightning rod in defining the course of modern painting as well as in establishing the first national art school. He is widely credited with resurrecting moribund traditional Japanese painting to health. The author shows this assessment of Fenollosa as the savior of Japanese traditional painting work may not have been deserved by examining the historical context in which he made the 1882 speech. The book offers the first English translation of Fenollosa’s 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that had been previously unavailable to the non-Japanese reading audience.

Download or read book The Challenge of Change Dealing with the Legacy of the Modern Movement written by D. van den Heuvel and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation of architecture - and the conversation of Modern architecture in particular – has assumed new challenges. Rather than attempting to return a Modern building to its resumed original state, the challenge of these proceedings is to revalue the essence of the manifold manifestations of Modern architecture and redefine its meanings in a rapidly changing world of digital revolution, worldwide mobility and environmental awareness. This volume aims to provide a variety of platforms for the exchange of ideas and experience. A large, international group of architects, historians, scholars, preservationists and other parties involved in the processes of preserving, renovating and transforming Modern buildings has been invited to investigate the paradox of the Modern monument, and to reflect on the manifold dilemmas of change and continuity. The general theme is elaborated through five sub-themes. The sub-theme ‘Change and Continuity’ addresses the tensions between change and continuity from a historical-theoretical perspective. ‘Restructuring Cities and Landscapes’ focuses on the larger scale of city and landscape, while ‘Shifts in Programme and Flexibility’ draws attention to the scale of the building or building complex, and questions limits of re-use and flexibility. The fourth sub-theme deals with education and the fifth sub-theme ‘Progress, Technology and Sustainability’ considers specific issues of techniques and materials.
Download or read book Alexandrian Legacy written by Mario Baghos and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together contributions exploring a range of aspects of the Alexandrian patristic tradition from the second half of the second century to the first half of the fifth century, a tradition whose complex and significant legacy is at times misunderstood and, in some quarters, wholly neglected. With contributions by both Australian and international scholars, the fourteen chapters here highlight that, behind the complexity of this tradition, one finds a vibrant Christian spirit – granted, one that has successfully put on the flesh of Hellenistic culture – and a consistent striving towards the reformation and transformation of the human being according to the gospel. Furthermore, this volume contributes a nuanced voice to the scholarly choir which already hums a new song about Christian Alexandria and its representatives. Indeed, these contributions are interdisciplinary in approach, combining methods pertaining to the fields of historiography, theology and philosophy, pastoral care, hermeneutics, hagiography, and spirituality. By way of this complex approach, this book brings together areas which currently evolve in separate scholarly universes, which is wholly befitting to the complexities entailed by the ever-challenging Alexandrian legacy.

Download or read book The Legacy of Kurt Sch tte written by Reinhard Kahle and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on proof theory centers around the legacy of Kurt Schütte and its current impact on the subject. Schütte was the last doctoral student of David Hilbert who was the first to see that proofs can be viewed as structured mathematical objects amenable to investigation by mathematical methods (metamathematics). Schütte inaugurated the important paradigm shift from finite proofs to infinite proofs and developed the mathematical tools for their analysis. Infinitary proof theory flourished in his hands in the 1960s, culminating in the famous bound Γ0 for the limit of predicative mathematics (a fame shared with Feferman). Later his interests shifted to developing infinite proof calculi for impredicative theories. Schütte had a keen interest in advancing ordinal analysis to ever stronger theories and was still working on some of the strongest systems in his eighties. The articles in this volume from leading experts close to his research, show the enduring influence of his work in modern proof theory. They range from eye witness accounts of his scientific life to developments at the current research frontier, including papers by Schütte himself that have never been published before.
