Book The Perceived Sustainability of Sports and Social Legacy Goals of Beijing Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games

Download or read book The Perceived Sustainability of Sports and Social Legacy Goals of Beijing Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games written by Charlie Song and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) legacy strategic approach, Beijing 2022 issued the legacy plan of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as a continuing effort from the 2008 Beijing Olympics "to promote a positive legacy from the Olympic Games to the host cities, regions and countries" (IOC, 2020). Using a qualitative approach guided by Asper's (2009) empirical phenomenology and Alase's (2017) interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), the author interviewed the Olympic officials in legacy planning for the 2008 Summer Games and/or the 2022 Winter Games, the scholars in Olympic studies, and a journalist reporting the Olympic legacy related news in Beijing. The narratives presented the interviewees' positive experiences and perceptions in most of the sustainability inquiries of the "soft" legacy goals. The results revealed that the Olympic and Paralympic ideals had been well appreciated by the mass public since Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Games and the sports and social legacies from the Games had been carried forward to Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. At the same time, a gap existed between urban and rural, especially on the sustainability of the legacy goals concerning people with disabilities.

Download or read book Building a Sustainable Olympic Values themed Legacy from London to Tokyo and on to Paris written by Derek Peaple and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to describe how a UK state secondary school has used Olympism and the Olympic and Paralympic values - as specifically expressed in the London 2012 Get Set education programme - to shape its culture, develop thematic approaches to teaching and learning, enhance students' personal development and leadership skills and establish a range of themed international learning partnerships. And secondly, to explore the related intent to build a sustainable Olympic and Paralympic values-themed legacy programme stretching from London 2012 through to Tokyo 2020 and then on to Paris 2024. The latter is designed to link schools in an international network inspired by the vision of De Coubertin and Olympism, as now defined in the Olympic Charter. In doing so, it additionally hopes to share how this experience may help to shape preparations for schools engaging with the educational opportunities arising from hosting the Games.

Book Legacy and Sustainability in the Olympic Movement s New Norm Era

Download or read book Legacy and Sustainability in the Olympic Movement s New Norm Era written by Rob VanWynsberghe and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article examines the Olympic Agenda 2020 forty recommendations through the lens of critical policy analysis. Specifically, the authors use Strittmatter et al.'s framework of legitimation strategies in policy formulation and implementation to investigate the ways in which the use of sustainability and legacy terminology is employed in the process of legitimating the IOC today. Findings demonstrate two general legitimation strategies. One is the familiar framing of the Olympic Games in terms of sustainability and legacy with a new emphasis on the Games as an opportunity to integrate cities' long-term planning needs into bidding and hosting the event. The second focus asserts the Olympic Movement's global leadership role in sport in the context of sport itself being depicted as a leading social institution in making meaningful social change. In this paper, the authors detail these legitimation strategies and offer commentary related to the need for the IOC to use this policy reform process to move beyond rhetoric alone to embed meaningful and measurable accountability standards in the hosting process.
