Book The Lead and Zinc Pigments Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lead and Zinc Pigments Classic Reprint written by Clifford Dyer Holley and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lead and Zinc Pigments Possibly in no other country has the art of pigment and paint making reached as high a level as in the United States. Certainly in no other country has the paint industry developed as rapidly during the last forty years as it has in America. The making of one hundred and fifty thousand tons of lead pigments and over seventy thousand tons of zinc pigments, resulting in the manufacture of over one hundred million gallons of paint besides the enormous sales of lead in oil, constitutes an industry that is to be counted among the important industries of the country. And yet until the passage of the first efficient and vigorous paint law in 1905, enacted by the state of North Dakota, and the court proceedings attendant thereto for the determining of the constitutionality of that law, those interested in the subject of pigments and paints were compelled to turn to English books for information, as our own literature was noticeable only for its meagerness. New pigments have come into use during the last ten years, new processes have been developed for the manufacture of the older pigments, new combinations of pigments have been worked out that have secured results hitherto unattainable. Yet up to the time mentioned above, except for short articles in some of the trade papers, these improvements and innovations remained practically unnoticed. Book Lead and Its Compounds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lead and Its Compounds Classic Reprint written by Thomas Lambert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead and Its Compounds IN the present volume the author has endeavoured to.show the great strides made in the metallurgy of lead and zinc, and to incorporate in it the latest applications of electrical science, not only in cleansing the ores, but also in their after treatment. The work also contains a description of the pigments of both metals, their manufacture and properties; and to make this portion as comprehensive as possible, the drying oils and siccatives, and their relation to pigments, are dealt with. In addition to other information of importance to the colourist, the value of the work is enhanced by a chapter devoted to the assaying and analysis of lead and zinc ores, and the quantitative testing of paints and oils. The book is divided into seventeen chapters, and is illustrated with forty drawings, specially made by Mr. Levi Lambert, to whom great credit is due. In conclusion, the author hopes the work will be studied with advantage by those engaged in the above branches of industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxide of Zinc: Its Nature, Properties and Uses, With Special Reference to the Making and Application of Paint It is probably not too much to assert that no pigment has increased more rapidly in use during recent years than has zinc oxide or as it is frequently called zinc white. Several reasons have con tributed to this result, the two most important being, first, the great hygienic value of the material, the fact that it is quite non-poisonous, and secondly, its great durability in situations which are very destructive to other pigments, notably white lead. The last of these points is ably dealt with in this little volume by the author, Mr J. Cruickshank Smith, and he, as an expert paint technologist of wide experience, clearly shows, in an impartial manner, that zinc oxide possesses other excellent qualities when used in a paint either by itself or in combination with other pigments. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preparation and Uses of White Zinc Paints The object of this examination of white zinc is not to revive polemical discussions now extinct in France owing to the passing of the Act interdicting, in France, the use of white lead in all paintwork in buildings. This treatise must not be taken for anything but what it really is, namely (1) a practical and scientific guide to the judicious use of white zinc (2) a Sketch of its fluctuating history and more especially (3) as complete an exposition as possible of the indispensable technical knowledge required by practical men to understand this white pig ment well, SO as to be able to demand of it all it is capable of doing, and not to require of it what it cannot do. There is no need to fear double dealing in the Author's developments; his explanations are always sincere and. Clearly expressed. Likewise, no one will find under his pen any form of advertisement, for it is as a practical and not as a commercial man that he writes. Book The Chemistry and Technology of Paints Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chemistry and Technology of Paints Classic Reprint written by Maximilian Toch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry and Technology of Paints The manufacture of mixed paints is essentially American, having been accredited to some enterprising New Englanders who observed that when a linseed oil paint was mixed with a solution of silicate of soda (water glass) an emulsion was formed, and the paint SO made Showed very little tendency to settle or harden in the package. Several lay claim to this discovery. The first mixed paint was marketed in small packages for home consumption and appeared about 1865. The addition of silicate of soda is still practised by a few manufacturers, but the tendency is to eliminate 'it as far as possible and to minimize as much as possible the use of an alkaline watery solution to keep the paint in suspension. The general use of zinc oxid has had much to do with the progress of mixed paint, for it is well known that corroded white lead and linseed Oil settle quickly in the package, while zinc oxid keeps the heavier lead longer in suspension. Where only heavy materials are used, manufacturers are inclined to add up to 4 per cent Of water. Under another chapter on Water in the Composition of Mixed Paints, page 254, this subject will be fully discussed. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of Zinc and Cadmium Although the zinc industry of the world ranks in importance with the copper and lead industries, there has never been printed heretofore a special treatise on the metallurgy of zinc. Such essays on this subject as have been published in generally available form are embodied in the handbooks on general metallurgy and industrial chemistry, which being necessarily brief fail to describe adequately the modern practice in this branch of metallurgy. Besides these there is no literature on the subject save in the files of technical periodicals and the transactions of scientific societies, chie y French and German, inasmuch as the Belgian and German engineers have led the way in this branch of metallurgy, until recently at least. XXIII COMMERCIAL CONDITIONS The commercial history of the zinc industry in the United Stat? is concisely reflected in the statistics, which are available with completeness, in so far as production, imports and exports, and consumption ar concerned, back to 1873. These statistics are summarized in the folio* 1 Up to 1900, inclusive, the statistics in this table are from Ingalls, Production and Properties of Zinc; 1901-1904, from Mineral Resources of the United States; 1905 In the above table, consumption has been computed without taking into account the difference in stocks of metal on hand at the beginning 1907, from The Mineral Industry. The statistics in the fourth column are the production of Indiana up to 1899; of Colorado from 1903 onward, (a) Including Indiana. (b) Including 2716 tons of dross spelter, (c) Including 2675 tons of dross spelter, (d) Including 3302 tons of dross spelter, (e) Including West Virginia, whose spelter is produced from Joplin ore. (J) Including 3300 tons of dross spelter. and end of each year, statistics for which are unavailable over the wb period covered by the table. The statistics of production and price in the above table from 1880 to 1892, both years inclusive, are from the reports of the U. S. Geological Survey. Apparently tiw figures for 1881-1888 are approximate estimates rather than totals based on reportfrom the producers. The statistics from 1893 to 1906, both years inclusive, are as reported by The Mineral Industry. The figures marked with an asterisk are estimated. The production for 1906 and 1907 includes zinc-lead pigments, and consequently is not strictly comparable with the figures for the previous years. The production of zinc oxide in the United States, with the exception of an...
