Download or read book The House of Goldsborough written by Paul Feist and published by Paul Feist. This book was released on 2011-11-23 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Goldsborough Family, it’s contributing family lines, and it’s descendants, from Anglo-Saxon England through the 17th century, are a fascinating study of the history of Eng- land and the associated family lines. This one family has its roots in families who signed the Magna Charta (de Clare, d’Albini), Sir William Marshal, Lord Protector of England and the “Greatest Knight that ever lived”, the Plantagenet Kings of England, the Earls of Warwick, and Rollo the Dane (Hrolf Ganger), First Duke of the Normans. This first volume of the massive six volume work was originally written by Eleanora Goldsborough in the 1920’s and 30’s, and remained un-published until now. The original has been verified and expanded where possible beyond the works of Eleanora Goldsborough. Modern references have been added to supplement the original research. One hundred percent of the original text has been retained, with all notes and expansions clearly noted.

Book Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer

Download or read book Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer written by Geoffrey Chaucer and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to overstate the importance of English poet GEOFFREY CHAUCER (c. 1343 c. 1400) to the development of literature in the English language. His writings which were popular during his own lifetime with the nobility as well as with the increasingly literate merchant class marked the first celebration of the English vernacular as a tongue worthy of literary endeavor, most notably in his unfinished narrative poem The Canterbury Tales, the format and structure of which continues to be imitated by writers today. But the impact of Chaucer s work was felt even into the 16th and 17th centuries, when the first major collections of his writings set a high standard for how authors should be presented to the reading public. This widely esteemed seven-volume set first published in the 1890s by British academic WALTER WILLIAM SKEAT (1835 1912), Erlington and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge University is based solely on Chaucer s original manuscripts and the earliest available published works (with any significant variations or deviations between versions highlighted in the extensive notes), and comes complete with Skeat s informative commentary on many passages. Volume III features: The Hous of Fame, one of Chaucer s earliest works, a poem some scholars consider a parody of Dante s Divine Comedy The Legend of Good Women, a dream-vision poem that represents an early major example of iambic pentameter in the English language A Treatise on the Astrolabe, the oldest work in English about a scientific instrument

Book English Without Boundaries

Download or read book English Without Boundaries written by Trudi Darby and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a compendium of world-class research on English, from the Anglo-Saxons to Big Data. Selected from papers presented at the 2016 conference of the International Association of University Professors of English, the essays demonstrate the strength of English studies across the world, with contributions from scholars in China, Finland, Israel, Italy, Japan and Portugal, as well as from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The essays not only cross geographical boundaries, but also disciplinary ones. Contributors write about English through the prism of gender studies, history, linguistics, the digital humanities, theatre history and the history of the book; topics covered include mainstream writers such as Shakespeare and Milton, and shine light on less well-known topics such as Welsh poetry of the Wars of the Roses and captivity narratives in seventeenth-century North America. Bringing together perspectives on English from around the world, English Without Boundaries is a unique collection showing the energy and breadth of English studies today.

Book The Texts and Contexts of Oxford Bodleian Library MS Laud Misc 108

Download or read book The Texts and Contexts of Oxford Bodleian Library MS Laud Misc 108 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-12-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late thirteenth-century, monolingual Oxford manuscript, Bodleian Library, MS Laud Misc. 108, bears singular importance to medieval studies, for it preserves and anthologizes unique versions of several seminal Middle English texts, including South English Legendary, Havelok the Dane, and King Horn and Somer Soneday. While critics have traditionally classified these poems by genre, this book returns them to their manuscript context in a comprehensive examination of this vernacular codex. Considering the manuscript as a “whole book” rather than a miscellany of romances, saints' lives, and religious poems, these inter-connected essays focus on the physical, contextual, and critical intersections of Bodleian Library, MS Laud Misc. 108. Codicological evidence foregrounds the manuscript’s investment in a particular vision of an English Christian identity. Contributors are A.S.G. Edwards, Thomas R. Liszka, Murray J. Evans, Andrew Taylor, Diane Speed, Susanna Fein, Robert Mills, Andrew Lynch, Daniel Kline, Christina M. Fitzgerald, and J. Justin Brent.
