Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Commercial Law: Containing a Clear, Concise and Logical Exposition, of the Rules Relating to Business, Transactions and the Management of Affairs This work was originally published in 1898. The aim of the author in this, as in former editions, is to state clearly, accurately and in language as free as possible from technicalities, the ele mentary rules and principles of American law with which it seems most important that business men should be familiar, his object being to make an instructive manual and reference work for general readers and men of affairs, and a practical text - book for use in schools and colleges where commercial branches are taught. Though the book has been recognized as standard and has formed the basis of the work of many of the leading com mercial schools and departments throughout the country for many years, the present revision has seemed a practical necessity owing, among other things, to the recent adoption in many states of uniform commercial codes, and to occasional important develop ments and applications of legal rules, or to statutory changes in the law. Download or read book Islands of Identity written by Samuel Edquist and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-31 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands of Identity: History-writing and identity formation in five island regions in the Baltic Sea Gotland, Aland, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Bornholm are five island regions in the Baltic Sea which constitute, or have until recently constituted, provinces or counties of their own. Combining perspectives from two disparate academic fields, uses of history and island studies, this book investigates how regional history writing has contributed to the formation of regional identity on these islands since the year 1800. The special geographic situation of the islands-somewhat secluded from the mainland but also connected to important waterways-has provided their inhabitants with shared historical experiences. Due to varying geographic and historical circumstances, the relationship between regional and national identity is however different on each island. While regional history writing has in most cases aimed at integrating the island into the nation state, it has on Aland in the second half of the 20th century been used to portray its inhabitants as a separate nation. Dramatic political upheavals as the World Wars has also caused shifts in how regional history writing has represented the relationship to the mainland nation state, and has sometimes also resulted in altered national loyalties.

Book Early Modern Debts

Download or read book Early Modern Debts written by Laura Kolb and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Modern Debts: 1550–1700 makes an important contribution to the history of debt and credit in Europe, creating new transnational and interdisciplinary perspectives on problems of debt, credit, trust, interest, and investment in early modern societies. The collection includes essays by leading international scholars and early career researchers in the fields of economic and social history, legal history, literary criticism, and philosophy on such subjects as trust and belief; risk; institutional history; colonialism; personhood; interiority; rhetorical invention; amicable language; ethnicity and credit; household economics; service; and the history of comedy. Across the collection, the book reveals debt’s ubiquity in life and literature. It considers debt’s function as a tie between the individual and the larger group and the ways in which debts structured the home, urban life, legal systems, and linguistic and literary forms.
