This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Therapeutics, or the Science and Art of Medicine We must be content to stand before Nature and ask questions. Nature is only to be subdued by submission. - Bacon. In the following pages I desire to make a fresh and unbiassed inquiry into the fundamental principles of the Science and Art of Healing, to ascertain if medicine can be brought into the position of an exact Science, or if it is to remain merely an Art. I have endeavoured to forget men and their systems, and to search for truth - for all truth. The true student of nature ever delights to lay self aside, to present his offering to the growth of knowledge and withdraw. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homopathy; The Science of Therapeutics: A Collection of Papers Elucidating and Illustrating the Principles of Homopathy Since the death. Of Dr. Carroll Dunham, a desire has been expressed by many of his colleagues that his writings should be collected in book form. The present volume contains such as most directly express his views on the cure Of disease by drugs. In their arrangement no attention has been paid to the order of time in which they were written, but those on the principles of cure have been placed together, while clinical cases illustrating these principles have been put side by side; and so great is the unity Of thought running through all, that it has not been deemed inappropriate to give to the collection the title of the main Essay. Book Disease an Unit Or Medicine a Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Disease an Unit Or Medicine a Science Classic Reprint written by H. Backus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disease an Unit, or Medicine a Science That there is nothing in the present Empirical State of Medicine - nothing in the doctrine that pathological phenomena are produced by distinct, specific causes, and therefore not capable of connection - which forbids the conclusion that all may be produced by a common cause, is seen in the fact that Astronomy was once in a state of Empiricism that Astronomical phenomena were once thought to be produced by distinct, specific causes, and therefore not capable of connection. That there is nothing in the Diversity of pathological phenomena which forbids the conclusion that disease is a unit, is seen in the fact that quite as great Diversity in what are called physical phenomena, have been reduced to a common Law. Complex and obscure as the laws of the material universe may appear to the superficial observer, surrounded by difficulties and lost in the maze of phenomena around him, he might be tempted, like the philosophers of old, to refer every effect to its own peculiar cause; a cause innate to theosub stance, essential to it, and animating like a soul. Far otherwise are the con elusions arrived at by him who, patiently investigating the appearances of the material world, is guided by the inductive reasoning of the Baconian school; he traces effects to their proximate causes, and generalizing these, is led to the discovery of a few simple laws, obeying which, atom unites to atom, and mass to mass, to form a World, rolling in its appointed sphere around the centre of our system, the great source of light and heat; he soon discovers that, in the beautiful simplicity of Nature's laws, the apparently' most insignificant, and the most gigantic effects are frequently produced by one and the same cause; he discovers that the very law which presides over the motions of the luminous orbs which roll in space around him, causes the' scattering of flour from the edge of the mill-stones, and of drops of water from the wet revolving carriage-wheel. That the law regulating the falling of an apple towards the earth, is identical with that which retains the moun tains on their broad basis, and the planets in their spheres. Nay, more, he learns that with such consummate wisdom have cause and effect been related. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Principles of Therapeutics

Download or read book Principles of Therapeutics written by A. Manquat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Therapeutics I dedicate this book to young physicians: they will work for a renaissance in Therapeutics which will be the great achievement of twentieth-century medicine. There is a general impression that Therapeutics is a very imperfect science. It would be more exact to say that it is an encumbered science, which is not studied with the attention it deserves, nor is it practised with sufficient precision. Hence, it often is tainted with fanciful and erroneous views. I shall be happy if I succeed in laying down principles to guide the young physician in the right direction. This book represents a far more considerable amount of labor than its size would suggest. The principles expounded herein are very numerous. I shall here refer only to the most important. I have endeavored to demonstrate that Therapeutics may be, and should always be, scientific, viz., an enemy to fanciful theories, hypothetical and hazardous deductions, and incomplete and superficial observations. I have also shown what therapeutic actions are, distinguished from so-called physiological actions, which are often toxic. I have, therefore, repeatedly combated the principle of physiological therapeutics, which has been a grave error. The latter often leads to the accumulation of medicinal and morbid poisons in the same organism or the same organ. A chapter is devoted to the differentiation of the various objects which a therapeutist may desire to attain. Book Doctor and Patience Classic Reprint

Download or read book Doctor and Patience Classic Reprint written by Harold Melvin Hays and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctor and Patience It is a timely and human document that Dr. Hays has put together in "Doctor and Patience." Most medical schools turn out the medical student of to-day having taught him much of diagnosis, little of therapeutics, and still less of medical ethics. The science of medicine is taught to-day as thoroughly as our scientific knowledge permits, but the rules and laws of conduct governing the profession in their relation to each other and the peculiar professional relations between the doctor and his patient, are left for each individual student to acquire by experience as he goes along. Formerly, when the preceptor system was in vogue and every young student attached himself to some older physician, each one acquired the traditions of the profession and absorbed the result of the elders experience in life and was thus saved many mistakes that he otherwise might have made. Download or read book A Syllabus of New Remedies and Therapeutic Measures written by John William Wainwright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of New Remedies and Therapeutic Measures: With Chemistry, Physical Appearance and Therapeutic Application I will admit the science of chemistry to be an exact science, mathematically determined; that a chemical, if pure, is identical with every similar product without regard to its source. I will grant that operative surgery is susceptible of predetermined results; that the study of obstetrics has in the main become a science; that a knowledge of optics entails an acquaint ance with laws upon which all agree and which do not vary; that all specialties in medicine are governed by a routine procedure which has but little variation. I will with equal boldness maintain that the part of the practice of medicine which brings to the physician success; that enables him to meet his obligations; that extends the boundaries of his domain and holds fast his clientele, is the least understood of all branches of medicine. I refer to Pharmacology, or the science of medicines, their nature, administration and effects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Law of Mental Medicine

Download or read book The Law of Mental Medicine written by Thomson Jay Hudson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Mental Medicine: The Correlation of the Facts of Psychology and Histology in Their Relation to Mental Therapeutics The object of this book, is primarily, to assist in placing mental therapeutics on a firmly scientific basis, and incidentally to place within the reach of the humblest intellect the most effective methods of healing the sick by metal processes. Part I. contains nothing new to the scientific world, except, perhaps, the method of treatment. It pertains solely to the psychological principles of mental medicine. These were outlined in my first work, entitled "The Law of Psychic Phenomena," ten years ago, and they are now taught in every reputable school of suggestive therapeutics. The reader will find, however, that the subject is by no means exhausted, and that the law of suggestion is the most important factor in man's mental make-up. In Part II. the fact is for the first time recognized that no hypothesis can possible embrace a complete science of mental therapeutics that fails to take cognizance of those facts of physiology and histology which pertain to the subject-matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Therapeutics: Its Principles and Practice There are a number Of excellent treatises upon materia medica and therapeutics yet in various attempts at original research, as well as in the ward and the lecture-room of the hospital, I have keenly felt the want Of something more. There are many points of view from which a subject can be looked at there are many paths by which it may be approached and to me, other points of view, other modes Of approach, have been far more enticing than those adopted in our standard treatises. The old and tried method in therapeutics is that of empiricism, or, if the term sounds harsh, Of clinical experience. As stated by one Of its most ardent supporters, the best possible development of this plan of investigation is to be found in a close and careful analysis Of cases before and after the administration Of a remedy, and, if the results be favorable, the continued use of the drug in similar cases. It is evident that this is not a new path, but a highway already worn with the eager but weary feet of the profession for two thousand years. That very much has been thus accomplished it were folly to deny. Leaving out of sight the growth Of the last two decades, almost all of the current therapeutic knowledge has been gained in this way.
