While they devote their genius and their energy to the elaboration of practical science, they give little attention to abstract truths. They rather leave these to the few whose peculiar profession it is to deal with them. Thus, religion and its necessary adjunct, Biblical research, are, for the most part, taken for granted as they are expounded by the representatives of the Church. In this way Judaism has come to be entirely misunderstood. It has been so universally described as a thing of obsolete forms and custom - as incompatible with progress as the associate of a low standard of morality - as the obstacle preventing the approach to heaven rather than the ladder reaching thither - that the world has grown to believe what few have taken the trouble to contradict, and still fewer to deem inconsistent with a dispensation acknowledged as divine. The Bible, which might serve as a guide, has been so spiritualized, that even they who read it scarcely allow their judgment to interfere with interpretations which they have been accustomed to regard as authoritative. It has been so mistranslated, that even they who desire to judge are prevented by want of proper materials. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Sinai: Being Devotional and Addresses on the Ten Commandments These Addresses are published in deference to the wishes, expressed from time to time, of some who heard them, and whose opinion the writer feels it a duty to respect. Were it not for this, the publication of another volume on the Ten Commandments would need an apology. The Addresses were delivered to those who were preparing for Ordination at Ely; and it is this circumstance which accounts for the form which they take, and for the special point of view adopted throughout. Book Three Questions of Formative Judaism

Download or read book Three Questions of Formative Judaism written by Jacob Neusner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The academic study of Judaism requires a systematic inquiry into the history, literature, and religion—and eventually the theology—as revealed in the historical documents themselves. Under this premise, Three Questions of Formative Judaism encounters the canonical writings of Judaism in the context of their creation at a certain time and place. How something is said thus becomes as important as what is said. Bringing nearly fifty years of research to bear on these fundamental questions, Jacob Neusner challenges his readers to face the difficult, often unasked or neglected questions about the nature, background, and purposes of Rabbinic Judaism and rewards them with an enriched understanding and a stronger foundation for tackling the even more elusive questions concerning the theology of formative Judaism. Book The Law of Love in the Old and New Testaments Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Law of Love in the Old and New Testaments Classic Reprint written by Gerald Friedlander and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Love in the Old and New Testaments For similar views see Hastings' Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels, ' Vol. Il., pp. 77 and 81, 'encyclopaedia Biblica, ' Vol. III., 3389, Hastings' 'dictionary of the Bible, ' Vol. III., p. 156, and the Bampton Lectures, pp. 194-5. These are but a few of the recognised authorities, and represent the general Christian view as to the assumed limitation attached to the law of loving one's neighbour. Is it a fact that Judaism in pre-christian times taught that love to man was strictly limited to the Hebrew people? Is it true that before the ministry of Jesus the Jew hated his enemy? If the writers quoted had only given chapter and verse for their statements it would be possible to test the validity of their conclusions. They all agree in making similar assertions, but all signally fail to give the slightest justification for their opinions. To assert that Jewish ethics are narrow, or to deny that Judaism teaches universal morality, is tantamount to saying that its religious system ls' merely in a state of development. It reached, so we are told, its consummation in the new revelation contained in the Gospels. We are all agreed that a religion must be finally judged by the value it sets on God and man. If a religion is found to be narrow, it will be justly rejected as lacking perfection. Duties to God and to man must be free from all limitations. The question which now confronts us is what did Judaism teach as to man's duty to God, and also as to his duty to his neighbour, prior to the New Testament period. Book The Law of Moses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Law of Moses Classic Reprint written by Édouard Naville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Moses In the Article which follows, a powerful argu ment is presented in support of the traditional belief of Jews and Christians, and, indeed, of all generations from the time of our Lord till about a hundred years ago, that the Five Books of our Bible, called the Pentateuch, are the Law of Moses. For these last hundred years, a school of criticism has prevailed in' the Universities of Germany and England, which denies this tra dition, and alleges that these five books are, in their present form, a compilation by Jewish scribes, after the Babylonian captivity, from writers so unknown that they can only be designated by letters, J., H., P., H., and so on, who wrote centuries after Moses. Nor is this the most important part of the critical theory. Such writers might tell the truth. But these writers and compilers together are said to have presented in the Pentateuch, 'to the Jewish people and the world, a radically false account of early Jewish history, and to have attributed to Moses legisla tion which came at a much later date. Voltaire once asked whether, if a sacred Book was found to state what was not true, it could be considered sacred. Strange to say, a large body of English. Download or read book Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament Vol 2 written by C. F. Keil and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament, Vol. 2: The Pentateuch Hap. X11. 1 - 28. Institution OF the passover. The deliverance of Israel from the bondage of Egypt was at hand; also their adoption as the nation Of Jehovah (chap. Vi. 6, But for this a divine consecration was necessary, that their outward severance from the land of Egypt might be accompanied by an inward sever ance from everything of an Egyptian or heathen nature. This consecration was to be imparted by the Passover - a festival which was to lay the foundation for Israel's birth (hos. Ii. 5) into the new life of grace and fellowship with God, and to renew it perpetually in time to come. This festival was there fore instituted and commemorated before the exodus from Egypt. Vers. 1 - 28 contain the directions for the Passover: viz. Vers. 1 - 14 for the keeping of the feast of the Passover before the departure from Egypt, and vers. 15 - 20 for the seven days' feast of unleavened bread. In vers. 21 - 27 Moses com municates to the elders of the nation the leading instructions as to the former feast, and the carrying out of those instructions is mentioned in ver. 28. Vers. 1 and 2. By the words, in the land of Egypt, the law of the Passover which follows is brought into connection with the giving of the law at Sinai and in the fields of Moab, Israel as the people of Jehovah (isa. Xliii. 15) commenced with the institution of the Passover. As a proof of this, it was pre ceded by the appointment of a new era, fixing the commence ment of the congregation of Jehovah. This month (i.e. The present in which ye stand) be to you the head (i.e. The be ginning) of the months, the first let it be to you for the months of the year, i.e. Let the numbering of the months, and therefore the year also, begin with it. Consequently the Israelites had hitherto had a different beginning to their year, probably only a civil yehr, commencing with the sowing, and ending with the termination of the harvest (cf. Xxiii. 16) whereas the Egyptians most likely commenced their year with the overflowing of the Nile at the summer solstice (cf. Lepsius, Chron. 1, pp. 148 The month which was henceforth to be the first of the year, and is frequently so designated (chap. X1. 2, I7; Lev. Xxiii. 5, is called Abib (the ear-month) in chap. Xiii. 4, xxiii. 15, xxxiv. 18, Deut. Xvi. 1, because the corn was then in ear; after the captivity it was called Nisan (neh. Ii. 1 Esth. Iii. It cor responds very nearly to our April.
