Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 94: July 28, 1932 Though I seem to have been born with a testimony yet in my early adolescence I was led to question whether that testimony was really my own or derived from my parents. I set about investigating the claims of the Church and pursued that investigation by prayer, fasting and research with all the ardour of an investigator on the outside. While such a one investigates with a view of coming into the Church if its claims be verified, I was seeking a way out of the Church if its claims Should prove to me to be unsound. After months of such inquiry I found myself in possession of an assurance beyond all question that I was in solemn fact a member of the Church of Jesus Christ. I was convinced once for all, and this knowledge isso fully an integral part of my being that without it I would not be myself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 94: October, 13, 1932 Philosophy. Mormon philosophy teaches that man, who is the literal offspring of God, His spiritual child, lived in a pre existent state; that he was placed on the earth as an eternal spirit in a mortal body to undergo the experiences that belong to this earth. Man suffered death, a separation of body and spirit, through the fall of his first parents. A Redeemer, Jesus Christ, was provided, empowered to overcome death. This Redeemer made possible a reunion of the spirit and the body through the resurrection, from death to immortality. When man reaches the immortal state he will be rewarded according to his works in the mortal state. His progress continues and is eternal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 94: September 8, 1932 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege; let them worship how, where, or what they many. Had any progress been made? Do you perceive advancement there in the working out of the divine purpose? This latter declaration was made by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Thus solemn affirmation was made of the inherent right of every man to worship as he will, or, by implication, to abstain from worshiping at all if he will - and can. There are substantial grounds for questioning man's ability to become wholly devoid of the impelling spirit of worship, at least ac knowledging - in love or in fear - some supreme power or Deity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 94: November 24, 1932 Alexander the Great mourned because there were no other worlds to conquer, simply because he could not turn his mind to the conquest of unseen but nobler worlds. True, this mother brought little worldly wealth to this land, but the contribution which her sons have made to this Church and to the world, would be hard to estimate. The Church at that time was only twelve years old, and this early recognition of women was in keeping with the spirit of the Gospel and the philosophy on which it is based. From a small beginning, the Relief Society has grown and developed until it has become national and international in scope and influence. It has branches in forty-three of the forty-eight states of America, in Canada, Mexico, in most of the European countries, in Asia Minor, in South Africa and in the following Pacific Islands: Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga and in New Zealand and Australia. I have personally had an opportunity of observing the excellent work of the Relief Society in many of these foreign countries, and everywhere the same fine service has been found. For its members, it has made provision for educational and wel fare work, and for spiritual development, and has always sought to be a comforting influence and a stabilizer of individual and community morals.
