Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 3, 1923 As Jesus and his disciples reached the well which Jacob had dug eighteen centuries before, and which was situated about a mile and a half east Of the city, he sat down on the edge of the well while his followers went to the town to buy food. It was a place where one might naturally fall into musings on former and present conditions. No doubt Jesus thought of the past glories of Israel, now become but a re ection of the splendor of Rome. Perhaps he thought of the division and the late bitter enmity between the two kingdoms, now handed down as a heritage Of hate to the Jews of the south and the Samaritans of the north. And this train of thought would prepare him well for the re markable conversation in which he was about to take part. A woman from the city came to the well, with a pitcher on her shoulder. As she drew water, she was very much surprised at hearing the man who sat there, apparently a Jew, ask her for a drink. She gave voice to her surprise, asking how he, a Jew, could ask a Samaritan for water, even a conversation between them being contrary to custom. His answer was a most skilful introduction of the subject nearest his heart, - his Messiahship and his mission to bring about the union and brotherhood of man. If she knew who it was that asked for drink, she would ask him for living water, drinking which She would never thirst again. She did not catch the Spiritual meaning of his words; but placing a physical interpretation on them, she asked him for that water, that she should no longer need to make the weary journey to the well and carry I rater to her home. Here was his Opportunity. He desired to teach her that the Spiritual water of which he spoke could be obtained only by acknowledgment and forsaking of sin. Therefore he brought her chief sin to her remembrance by telling her to bring her husband. She told him she had no husband. He quickly answered: Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands, and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. The Lord has revealed himself to his people; both God the Eternal Father and His Son Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith the prophet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 10, 1923 Disaster has come to many members of the Church, he said. Because they failed to heed the counsel to stay out of debt. Some have lost their homes by reason of debt, and have been obliged to move to other climes; and this in some instances has resulted and might yet result in their drifting away from the Church. He said he can find no financial adviser who is willing to predict safety beyond the very near future, and to-day is as good a time as ever to heed the ad vice. It occurs to him that one debt the Latter-day Saints owe is their debt to the Lord, and he admonished the saints to be prompt and fair in the payment of their tithes in the season thereof. The next Speaker called was President Charles A. Callis of the Southern States mission. It is good to live to-day, he said. There have always been those who garnish the sepulchres of the dead prophets, the speaker pointed out, but he believes that if a man is disloyal to the Church leaders to-day he would have been disloyal to the Prophet Joseph Smith if a man is disloyal to the government of the United States to-day he would have been disloyal to George Washington and the other patriots of his day. He told of a conversation he had had with a learned man who said that if the world had been told ten years ago that the great world war was coming it would have laughed the informer to scorn and then would have crucified him. Elder Callis said he told the man that in effect the world did crucify such a man, for the Prophet Joseph Smith foretold the great Civil war and died a martyr to his convictions. It is the call of Latter-day Saints to cry repentance to the world and to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of whom Latter-day Saints are not ashamed. Book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 85 August 30 1923 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 85 August 30 1923 Classic Reprint written by David O. McKay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: August 30, 1923 Many people have asked how it is that Mormonism so func tions; how it is able to work in such a fashion ia behalf of humanity; because I might take anything else, any other activity, sound and good and designed for the welfare of the human race, and show practically the same conditions that apply to the course and the cause of ed u *ation. One man will declare that the reason why these things are so in Mormonism is merely because by some accidental condition, great men have arisen in Mormon dom. Joseph Smith was a tremendously great character; every student, whether of our people or not, will admit the greatness of the man. And so, those who do not understand us will say we had a great man to found our Church and that explains how we are able to show a condition so favorable. Another will say that Brigham Young was such a great man. And so, as I read recently in a book not long since published, all Mormonism may be explained because of the great men that Mormonism has had. Another book declares that the reason why this test of truth, this test of fitness to human conditions, measures up as well as it does, is because Mormonism has been placed under very difficult conditions. It had to light its way in Missouri. It had to fight its way out here in the desert. It has been opposed by men, and as a consequence it has been able, through Opposition, to develop into the great institution that it is to-day. Any such explanation, my brethren and sisters, is insufficient to those of us who have understood the spirit of the remarks that have been made at this conference. There are in this Church great fundamental principles, and reflected from those princi ples are great fundamental practices. The possession of these principles, the use of these practices, lie at the foundation of any explanation of the vitality and the strength and the fitness of Mormonism to serve the human race and that is my testimony to you, as I understand this great Gospel of Jesus Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: January 18, 1923 The contention of the members of this Church is that the Gospel in its fulness and power has been restored to the earth and the fundamental principles of Christianity, many of which have been forgotten or rejected by the world, have again been restored for men's salvation. Mormonism seeks to round out and perfect a fragmentary Christianity. It seeks to bring into accord and union all Christian peoples and to prepare the world for the second advent of Jesus Christ. There have been some who have been unwilling to con cede to the members of this Church the appellation of Christians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 31, 1923 Those familiar with the world's history, explained the Speaker, will realize that since the beginning of history relentless warfare has been waged by the state upon the church, and in turn an even more relentless warfare has been waged by the church upon those who have chosen to disagree with its teachings. The massacre of St. Bartholomew can never be forgotten, said the speaker, and at some time must be atoned for. President Ivins then referred to the persecution which has been heaped upon the Jews since they were taken into bondage, saying that whatever mistakes they may have made, for devotion to an ideal they have no parallel in the world's history. That they have survived and retained the faith is a miracle. The Latter-day Saints believe, the Speaker averred, that the coming of Columbus was part of a divine plan, and that this land had been preserved for a place of refuge to the oppressed and downtrodden. President Ivins said it is also a belief of the Church that the founding of this government and the making of its basic laws were inspired of the Lord. So it is not at all strange that the state and church government should be similar. The difference is, that obedience to the civil law is compulsory, while it is left to the individual to reject or obey the law of the Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: March 29, 1923 No one need take the writer's word on this point. Read the history of the Mormon people from beginning to end, and you will find that no trials could daunt them, no dangers could make them afraid. Driven from their homes in one place, they at once set about building new ones in other places, and when they faced the perils of a march of a thousand miles through trackless desert, they danced and sang their way through to a sage-brush wilder ness which they speedily made to blossom like the rose. It was their religion which sustained them in all their trying ordeals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
