Of disease. Pray? Yes, pray without ceasing, pray without words, but let those words be the expression of the prayer in our souls; pray with deeds that the prayer may have more force and be more effective, The mere knowledge of what we ought to do is not a saving power. Once a great scourge of cholera broke out in a certain European city. It was found that most of the cases were confined to, or could be traced to, a particular district of the city. That district derived its water supply from an old distributing system the other part of the city was supplied with water through a new system and the purity of the water was more carefully guarded in the new system than in the old. A capable scientist suspected at once that there must be the intimate relation of cause and effect between the water used in the infected part of the city and the virulent scourge there. He made his examination, made chemical analysis and microscopical tests, and he saw the cholera germs in the water. He developed the germs in cultures, the seed of which was contained in a drop of that infected water; and he gave warning to the people, telling them whence the scourge of the contagion and warning them not to drink any unboiled water. Boiling the water would insure the death of the cholera bacillus, for like other living things, these bacilli are limited in their ability to withstand excessively high temperatures. There were many who had faith in him, not a dead useless faith that amounted to mere curiosity, or at most, mental assent, but a faith that stirred them to action, that made them light their fires and boil the water for domestic use, and they were saved. There were others who possibly thought well of the suggestion, but who had not faith enough or energy enough or common sense enough to apply it. The crisis had passed. The Mormons were given a six-year period of respite. Nature and nature's God smiled a providential bene diction upon the efforts of their hard-earned toil. But the respite was only temporary. It was simply a lull before the military storm that was destined to break in presidential fury on the Mormon people. As the saints were assembled in peaceful and joyful concourse at the head of Big Cottonwood canyon, celebrating the tenth anniversary of their entrance into Salt Lake valley, three horse men, covered with dust and grime, urged their tired steeds into the midst of the gathering, and one of the horsemen, Orrin Porter Rockwell, thrust into the hands of President Brigham Young a message of portentous meaning. It announced the coming of Johnston's army to Utah to wipe the Mormons off the map. Never in all his long and illustrious career were the elements of statesmanship and leadership demonstrated more clearly by Brigham Young than upon this occasion. Quietly, deliberately, methodically Governor Young took hold of this ticklish situation. The people were told what was in store for them. They were ordered to vacate their homes, pile their belongings into covered wagons and hastily move south but President Young told them further that Israel's God would be and abide with his people. Active military preparations were instituted by their titular leader. This time the Mormons were not to give up their homes without a sanguinary struggle. Every one labored with feverish anxiety. The saints did not wait for the army to bring the war to their doors they sauntered bodily forth to meet and harass the enemy. It is the mainstay and dependance of a happy life. It is the grand treasure that we need, the pearl for which no price is too dear. Its value cannot be computed in pounds shillings and pence; yet it is within the reach of everyone of us, without money and without price. In fact, it is a treasure which God has given to every son and daughter of Adam and Eve, and we sometimes make it do service in promoting our happiness. Jews, Christians, heathens, all possess this gift from God, and are more or less contented and happy so long as their lives are passed under its beneficent influ ence; but the trouble is we do not or cannot always exercise a vigorous hope. Some of us are full of hopefulness so long as we are sailing the sea of life in fair weather, but once let storms or disappointments fall to our lot and we send before the winds with fear and worry in our hearts. There are some people, however, who seem to be always full of hope. They see clear through the darkest cloud to the silver lining on the other side of it. There is nothing in this life that does not have something of a bright side to it, and they always keep their eyes fixed on the lighted part. Their's is a hope that does not get threadbare, it does not wear out though day and year in and out it is in con stant service. Time has no power to tarnish it, but it grows brighter and brighter the more it is used as time progresses. Mere immersion in water, and the laying on of hands, would not be, could not be, an ordinance recognizable and acceptable beyond the grave, were it not that these ordinances are prescribed and required; and, therefore, when administered to the prepared and receptive candidate, by the authority given of God, they become effective as means toward salvation and are indispensable to salvation.
