I remembered the advice that had been given me by my mother a week before, and decided to follow it. I locked the door, and for the first time in my life knelt down and began to pray to my Heavenly Father. I had always bowed in prayer with the family, but had never prayed alone. I was thoroughly in earnest. I appealed to the Eternal Father just as a child appeals to his earthly parent, the substance of my prayer being Lord, what wilt thou have me to do I cannot describe what followed all that I can say is this: The Lord convinced me as thoroughly as if he had spoken to me by his own voice that it was his will that I should become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I arose from my knees with a burning desire in my heart to be baptized, a desire which was gratified a few days later - March 2md, 1872. The step cost me my job, but I succeeded in finding another. To the righteous it is a place of rest, a Paradise, indeed; to the unrighteous it is a purgatory 011 hell, where they are punished and corrected and taught and made ready for the resurrection. Jesus went there and the thief went there. But Jesus went to teach and the thief went to be taught. The latter could not be exalted into heavenly glory until he was prepared for it. Better to repent at the eleventh hour than not at all, but heaven is not gained at a single bound. That was Joseph Smith's doctrine. It was the doctrine-of the Saviour. They say we are not Christians. Why, we are nothing if we are not Christians. We believe in Christ more than any church on earth. Joseph Smith had a vision in which he saw the human race and their eternal destiny. He saw the many mansions that the Saviour referred to. He saw the celestial, terrestrial, and telestial kingdoms, and kingdoms that were not kingdoms of glory. It was shown to him that the glorified planets, the stars, are God's kingdoms. They all have a law given unto them, and whichever glory we attain to we must obey the law pertaining to that glory. We did not have wireless telegraphy, or wireless telephones, or anything of that kind, so he felt quite safe in ridiculing me for believing in prayer by saying I could not be heard. But I told him God had answered my prayers, and I knew it, and I proposed to go on praying. He also ridiculed me for believing in the Book of Mormon, because it taught that the forefathers of the American Indians were skillful in the use of cement, and erected cement buildings. Why, they did not know anything about cement in those times, he said. The whole thing is a fraud. I told him God had given me a testimony in my heart and soul that this book was true. I believed it absolutely, and I expected to live to see the day when we would find that the forefathers of the American Indians did understand building with cement. Since that time there has been uncovered a monument down here in Mexico, which is 200 feet high, and as big as this whole block of ten acres I I guess they knew something about cement - with a ten-acre foundation, 200 feet high, built of cement; and from the top of this monument you overlook a valley were you see a mound here and a mound there, all around, and as they are uncovering the mounds, lo and behold they are cement dwellings. The first time I was ever entertained at dinner in a large private home in the great city of London, my host had also invited some newspaper men and some friends. Among others invited was a gentlemen who had been connected with the British legation in Constantinople. He' had traveled extensively, and I spent nearly the entire evening conversing with him, because I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his descriptions of the lands he had visited. Among other things he said: Mr. Grant, the last time I was in Canada, I came across the most inexplicable thing of my life. Away up in the northern wilds of the Dominion, among those heathen Indians, I found woven with beads the exact dupli cate of patterns that I had seen in the Holy Land, woven in fabrics or what is known as oriental Holy Land rugs. I had never in all my travels in different parts of the world seen any of those patterns except in the Holy Land; and the idea of finding, away up among the North American Indians, in the northern part of Canada, the exact duplicates of Holy Land patterns, is the most inexplicable thing of my life. I said Why, that is easy. Why so? These heathens never heard of Jerusalem. I asked, Did you ever read the Book of Mormon? N o. I will send you a copy. The fore fathers of the American Indians came from Jerusalem. What? He exclaimed, that explains the inexplicable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: March 2, 1922 From a wagon in this first Camp of Israel on Sugar Creek on February 17, Brigham Young addressed the company, outlining the journey that lay before them, declaring that order would be preserved, that all who wished to live in peace when the actual march began must toe the mark, and calling for a show of hands by those who wanted to make the move. The vote in favor of going west was unanimous. From that point the feet of the refugees were set upon a pathway from which there was no turning. Naturally the exodus of several hundred people of all ages and both sexes from comfortable homes to a nomad existence in the dead of winter entailed much suffering, and this first move gave the emigrants some premonitory hint of the trials they were fated to undergo. While the company remained in the camp at Sugar Creek the thermometer dropped to twenty degrees below zero and heavy falls of snow occurred. Several children were born in this first Camp of Israel before the actual journey to the West began. The covered wagons and the tents in which they lived proved but a poor protection from the inclement winter weather, and the sufferings of the sick and feeble began while they were still almost within sight of the comfortable homes which they had left. When, for the gratification of their appetites or the promotion of their interests lawyers, bankers, great mer chants and manufacturers and socials leaders, both men and women, disobey and scoff at this law or any other law, they are aiding the cause of anarchy and promoting mob violence, robbery and homicide; they are sowing dragon's teeth and they need not be surprised when they find that no judicial or police authority can save our country or humanity from reaping the harvest.
