Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: March 6, 1919 Let us take a reference from the writings of the wise man Solomon, as regarding this subject. In Ecclesiastes (12: 7) we read: Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Naturally, we come to the conclusion that for the spirit to return to any place or locality, it is absolutely necessary that it should previously have been there. Hearken to the words of Paul to the Hebrews (12: Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us and we gave them reverence, shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? Do we need anything more plain or distinct than this? You will notice that fathers of our flesh is in the plural, whereas in reference to the Father of spirits, the noun is in the singular. The disciples of Jesus seemed to have understood this teaching of pre-existence, as witness their asking Jesus, Who did sin, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? (john 9: They had no doubt in their minds that a man could sin before coming into this life, for they asked if the blindness was the result of sin on the part of the man, or his parents, and, if it had been on the part of the man, then it must have been committed in his pre-existent state, because he was born blind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: June 12, 1919 Doctrine and Covenants, p. The elements of the body, as well as of the spirit, are eternal. They were not made out of nothing - they were not made at all, in their native integrity and individuality. Every atom is eternal. Now when I say atom I am using the word that conveys the idea of the smallest thing I can think of. The atom itself may be a compound for aught I know. But the original elements of the universe are eternal always were, and always will be; and our bodies are organized out of these elements, in a certain way. It is according to the old way of generation, and always has been. It did not spring out of nonentity. Generation has always brought forth of its own kind, every herb in the season thereof, every fruit in its season; and every seed begets its own kind, and not another. There are of course variations of the kind, but never one bringing forth another. That knocks on the head some of the science of latter days, and we can apply to it the advice of Paul in the second chapter of his epistle to the Colossians; Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Pay no attention to them, for they do not know as much about that subject as you do, who have received the word of the Lord. It is only theory with them, but they call it science. He had been restless during the previous night, rising often and walking about, and in the morn ing was dressed and walked from his bedroom into the adjoining sitting room, where he was telling Dr. S. B. Young how he felt. His wife was sitting near him. He had been, apparently, as near death many times during his illness as on this occasion. The change came suddenly; there were no contortions nor struggles, two long drawn breaths and a straightening up of his body were the only signs that gave his family notice of his departure; his head fell in the arms of his wife; life had fled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: December 11, 1919 Elder Richards referred to the industrial unrest, the strikes on every hand, race riots, crime on every hand. A great world war has been fought and won, said Elder Richards, but the problems that face mankind now are probably even greater than the war itself. The whole world looks to this nation to solve its prob lems and thereby point the way to a solution of the problems of the entire world. It is not putting it too strong to say that great statesmen are unable to fsolve these problems. Man is groping. God has'been left out of consideration; the things that pertain to this life have been made paramount and pre dominate over the things that pertain to the spiritual life. Disregard of law and authority, is the cause of crime, the cause of unrest. The evils in the land are the result of the attitude of men in disregarding the law of man as well as the law of God. Men disregard the rights of others, they disregard the rights of property. They obey no law, only a selfish impulse. The crying need in the land, to-day, is to teach the fundamental principles of citizenship and obedience to law. Elder Richards said he believes any club, fraternity or union that does not make for the interest of all the people and the common good of all will in time become inimical to the government and will be arrayed against each other to the greater discord and unrest of the nation. For his part, the Church is his club, the Church is his fraternity, his union. He is not absolutely opposed to members of the Church joining unions, but let them see to it that they join no unfair or selfish organization that will make for more discord and strife. The leaders of the Church love the Latter-day Saints and if the people will hearken to their teachings they will not and cannot go astray. Here, where the Church is established, is the cradle of liberty; Massachusetts can lay claim to being the cradle of American history but the true cradle of liberty is the place whence goes forth the word of the Lord, for the gospel of truth is the gospel of liberty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: July 24, 1919 Long and earnestly the great leader gazes upon the scene, while the members of the little company await breathlessly the verdict. Then, relaxing his hold upon the shoulders of his supporters. He utters the memorable words: This is the Place! Drive on. This is the Place! The place for what? What objective had led this little company of toil-worn men and women to sacrifice the gentler customs and comforts of civilization, to wend their way out into the heart of the Great American Desert? Ah! It was the witness in their souls that God was about to perform a mar velous work and a wonder. His kingdom was about to come to earth, and it was here, here in the midst of desolations, that the nucleus of His work was to be laid! This had been the warp and the woof of their dreams by night, and the vision that glowed before their spiritual eyes by day, throughout all the long, weary march, characterized by so much physical pain and suffering. This the vision that prompted them t0'new effort when physical strength hung in the balance! The overwhelming conviction that God had not forgotten His people, nor His prophets; the inspira tion of which had heartened them time and time again, while on the pilgrimage, to take up the strains of: Come, come, ye saints. No toil nor labor fear-all is well! All is well! For this, like those of old, they took gladly the Spoiling of their goods, dispossession, exile far from the madding crowd, that they might have the privi lege of worshiping God as their souls desired, and that they might secure for themselves a place of refuge in which to begin the great latter-day work of preparation for the coming of the Great King. And so, down into the valley bottom they wended their way. And there, before the sun had yet declined beyond the western hills, they had already begun the establishment of a civilization in the heart of those vast solitudes. The voice of God had said, through the inspiration of the prophets of old: It shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the tops of the mountains, and Shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it. A house must be builded, then, to the Lord, so that the Christ should not again have it to say that the foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man hath not where to lay His head. On April 6th, 1853, just five years from the time of their entrance into the valley, and while yet the people labored in dire poverty, the foundation stones of the temple of God were laid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: September 4, 1919 Mr. John Dorothy, an influential and wealthy member of the Presbyterian or Congregational church proposed to me that if I would leave my father and pledge myself never to become a Mormon and commence immediately to go to school, he would warrant me seven years education without it costing me a dollar; that he was authorized to assure me that there should be no failure, as the Young Men's Educational Society wished me to study divinity and become a Presbyterian minister. I told him that Mr. Cannon, his minister, had sealed me up unto eternal damnation and I would consequently be unfit for a minister. He replied, that would make no' difference. I told him the reason why it would make no difference was that Mr. Cannon had no authority from God and I would not preach without authority as the Presbyterian ministers did. He then said I might choose my profession and I should have the education anyway, if I would agree never to join the Mormons. I had always desired a liberal education but I told him that my father was sick and that the Fifth Commandment required me to honor my father and mother; and it was my duty to stay and take care of them as I was their only dependence. He replied: Your father and mother have dishonored themselves by becoming Mormons. Take my advice and I will insure you a liberal education, and you may become a member of Congress. I will guarantee that you shall have as good an education as can be got, without it costing you a farthing but your time in getting it, and the wealthiest members of.
