He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. The importance of baptism is here set before us in the plainest terms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: January 9, 1913 The prospects of the latter-day work at the Christmas of 1912 are magnificent. Peace prevails in our mountain homes. Order and unity give strength to all our ecclesiastical organizations. In terest in doctrine, in discipline, in spiritual and secular education, in purity of life and character, in the care and culture of the young, in the study of civil government, in science, in art, in music, in literature and in those recreations that elevate as well as enter tain, and the attendance at devotional gatherings, all tend towards the steady building up of the kingdom of the Lord. During the festive season now at hand we think it timely to draw attention to the subject of dancing parties, a diversion permitted to Latter da-y Saints, but under certain rules that ought to be strictly oh served. The indiscriminate association of saints and strangers in public balls, improperly encouraged often for the raising of funds, is not productive of that good and wholesome spirit that is desirable. In all Our settlements such recreations should be in control of appointed committees, and regulations for order and decorum should be strictly maintained. 'intoxicants should be barred entirely from dancing halls and their vicinity. Those dances that require or permit the close embrace and suggestive movements, that are beginning to be condemned in all respectable social parties, ought to be utterly prohibited. Immodesty in dress should be frowned down by parents and all decent people. The shameless exhibitions of the human form purposely presented in modern styles of dress, or rather undress, are indications of that sensuous and debasing tendency toward moral laxity and social corruption which have hurried nations into irretrievable 'ruin. Let not the brilliant prospects of a glorious millennium be clouded with such shadows as are threatened by customs and costumes and diversions of these licentious days. It is not gold, nor silver, nor brass, nor lead, nor iron, which will bring the eternal peace. It is truth, honor and justice. It is Faith, Hope and Love. It is on the virtues of mankind, upon the freedom of mankind, and the gospel of Jesus Christ that the future of mankind is to be builded. Our Puritan fathers, when landing on the bleak New England shore, in 1620, had announced to all future posterity that through the divine grace of God should this country live. Their compact read. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: August 28, 1913 Then followed two months of closest investigation and deepest study. I read the Mormon literature, compared the teachings there with the teachings of the Bible, attended their meetings, and finally, being fully convinced that truth was with the Mormons, I applied for baptism and admission into their Church. The first time I met with the elders, I followed their advice, and prayed to God for a testimony of the truth, and that same night. In answer to earnest prayer, I received the assurance within my soul that the Mormon Church was, indeed, the Church of God. But I would not accept the knowledge, I could not, I fought against it with all my available powers. It could not be, it could not 1 The way to heaven through the Church that was every where spoken against! The Mormons God's chosen people Must I join forces with them, and hear my name spoken in terms of contempt and derision It was too much to ask. I could not do it. And yet within my ears sounded ever the words, What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul, and after all, what should I lose? And would not the salvation of my soul more than compensate? And so the battle was fought, truth conquered, and I became a Mormon. The day I was baptized (and in spite of all the world says in derision to the contrary, the truth was prevailing, for four men were baptized on the same occasion, and one little girl), one of the elders (d. G. Selman), addressing the meeting at night, turned to us who had that day taken our stand for God and truth and said, Don't think that the battle is ended, for you it has only just begun. I, for one, was soon to prove the truth of those words. During the two months investigation I had said nothing to my friends of what was taking place within my mind. I felt it was a matter that rested entirely with my own soul and with God. I realized fully that I had a soul to save, and that none but God could aid me, and so I said no word. But when the battle was won, and I had done that from which there was no returning, then I wrote and told my friends What had taken place. It will add coals to the fire of faith already burning within us. It will add impetus to our zeal and determination to press on. Courage. Is a boon to every man. Courage carries us through storms of persecution and brings us out triumphant; or, as one writer puts it, Courage is naked Right put through the fire and brought out uncracked and unbroken. Christ was a glorious example of courage. Coming into an apostate world He meekly presents Himself as the Messiah - the Son of God. Nothing more blasphemous in the ears of the Jews could have been uttered, yet it was a solemn truth. He traveled about in humility and self-abasement, teaching doctrines appar ently contrary to the law of Moses, facing persecution on every hand, renouncing the pious Scribes and Pharisees, and calling sinners unto repentance. He knew that all this was contrary. To Jewish ideas; but He had come to revise those ideas. One of the crowning events of His earthly life was the beautiful example He set for us in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the intense affliction of His soul, He sought courage from God. He taught us the in fallible source from which we can draw comfort and courage when our hours of trial and despondency appear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: November 20, 1913 We might divide humanity into two classes - they who follow in the footsteps of others and merely exist, and they who act for themselves and We can go in leading-strings throughout our lives, doing certain things simply because someone else did the same, and in this way never accomplish anything praiseworthy. Or we can live a life of individuality, start some truth to rolling, and eventually' attain that Vision which has long been cherished in our hearts. The two courses are optional with us. However, the option is predicated upon certain laws which must be obeyed. In obeying these laws it may necessitate sacrifice of momentary pleasures. But by the use of our inherent reasoning faculties, and by application to the right course, as God reveals it to us, we can surmount most difficulties. Life is no idle dream. Our all-wise Creator has placed us here for a grand and glorious purpose, and it behooves each of as to improve each shining moment. We are not going to achieve any of our high ambitions by procrastination. We can not say, I will begin anew next year, or next month, nor next week; no, not even to-morrow, or in a few moments. We should sense the significance of that maxim of inestimable worth, Do it now, not only saying to our inner self, I will try, but, we can and should, absolutely Do it now. Do not put if off till to-morrow, The present is all thou hast, For the future Will soon be present, And the present will soon be p'ast.
