Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: December 19, 1912 May the Lord bless you, my friends, and comfort your hearts. Bless your souls, What is lacking? What do they need to com fort them? A noble father, a noble mother, both Of whom have been devoted all their lives to the cause Of Zion and Of truth; both Of whom have fought the good fight' and kept the faith, and have set an example before them that is worthy of the imitation of all men, in all ages Of the world. There is no death here; we do not feel the influence Of death, but freedom from the sorrows and pains and anguish Of this mortal career, with the absolute assurance that we shall meet again, that we shall know them as they are, that they will not change into something else, but they will be themselves, and that is the point in Mormonism. It teaches us that. The Bible teaches it and the Book of Mormon teaches it. Not a hair Of the head shall be lost. Read the Book Of Mormon and see what it says. The Book Of Mormon teaches it, and those who believe in Mormonism believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and they must accept these things. And why should we not have joy in the contemplation of meeting our loved ones when we shall have finished this course. When I came to the home Of Brother West, I thought to myself, What a glorious meeting there has been on the other side. Franklin has been waiting for his companion, with others that have passed before. Only a few days ago it was my privilege to be at the funeral of Henry P. Richards, the youngest brother Of Franklin D. Richards. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: December 26, 1912 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has established important and flourishing missions in various parts of the United States, in Great Britain, in Germany and Switzerland, in the N eth erlands, in France, Norway, Denmark and Sweden, in South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Samoa and the Hawaiian Islands. From these countries have been drawn thousands upon thousands of converts, who testify that they have received a knowledge of the truth of the work of God founded by Joseph Smith, the Pro phet. Thus it will be seen that the, prediction of the Savior and His beloved disciple John is being fulfilled to the letter, and a glorious era is opening up to all nations. The force, vitality and influence of the new faith upon the hearts of men is emphasized by the record of its humble, devoted, faithful advocates, some 666 in number, in the European mission during the year 1912 to November 30th (december reports not received), and of which the following is a summary: Tracts dis tributed, gospel conversations, books distributed, meetings held, baptisms, total Millennial Stars published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: November 28, 1912 Upon it let the clouds distil virtue and richness and let the fields smile with plenty. Let the flocks and herds greatly multiply upon the mountains and hills. Let thy great kindness conquer and sub due the unbelief of Thy people, incline them to gather in upon this land according to Thy word. Let the large Ships of nations bring them from the distant isles, etc. Oh, the meaning of that prayer and the humility of the Divinely called man who uttered it! That prayer is recorded in heaven, as well as upon earth, as shown by its fulfillment before the eyes of all nations. That prayer answers every question that can arise concerning the gathering of Judah in this day. It stands as another witness to all the world of the truth of the restored gos pel of Jesus Christ and the Divine commission that rests upon the leaders of God's Church, to which the world in derision gives the name of Mormonism. Despite present unpopularity and persecution, the world will some day come to realize that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been God's instrument for the fulfillment of His purposes in these latter days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: February 8, 1912 God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is at the head of all genuine priesthood, and Jesus now stands accredited as the Apostle and High Priest of our profession. Subordinate priests in the same apostolic order of the Son of God are such as He has put in His Church. These are called apostles, prophets, evangelists, teachers, etc., which officers are For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God. That we henceforth be no more children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive. (eph. 4: 12 St. Paul here plainly gives us to understand that without the properly authorized servants of God in the Church we shall be tossed about by every wind of doctrine. He gives us a sure key to the situation. Why all this uneasiness and unrest in the Christian world? Is God the author of con fusion? Nay. Where there is priesthood there is order and no conflict as to doctrine. The abuses practised by an apostate and uncalled priesthood for the last one thousand and seven hundred years have wrought an honest but misguided prejudice against the true priesthood. Was there ever a time in the world's history when the officers St. Paul spoke of were more necessary than at this day? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: March 28, 1912 We find by reading I. Cor. 1: 12-13, that a similar condition existed in early times to that of to-day. There were divisions among the people. Some were teaching one thing, others another. The Apostle Paul's Opinion of this matter will be of interest. Let us see if he regarded it as a reason for congratu lation. He did not say, Go ahead; you are all aiming for the same place. Understand the doctrines as you please, for it shows an investigating spirit when there is division amongst you. His words lead us to believe that he was far from pleased with their wranglings. He does say, Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. Paul, therefore, believed that the followers of Jesus should be of one mind, and he asks, Is Christ divided? Then, allowing his righteous indignation full sway, he exclaims, I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. The Savior Himself ad vances the idea, that there can only be one true church, when He says, this, gospel of the kingdom (matt. 24: and to Peter, upon this rock I will build my church (matt. 16: That means one church, not several. From these passages we easily see that Christ established but one church, and that He left but one gospel, as the apostle explains, One Lord, one faith, one baptism. (eph. So all of the modern sects cannot be right the one true church will be modelled after the early church and will be the only receptacle of Divine authority. The scriptures tell us how the church was founded and received its authority in the beginning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: November 21, 1912 The Church to-day is expending hundreds of thousands of dollars in the promotion of a system of education which shall meet the future requirements of the people. Such a system of education means more than the temporary advantages of intellectual thrift. It has to do with the permanent well-being of the masses. Much of their intellectual lives in a few years will be quite out of fashion. We shall find that much of that which we called intel lectual was merely a sentiment, a passing public opinion formed at haphazard and out of an incongruous mass of irresponsible, indi vidual conceptions. In years to come, the world will be woefully disappointed in its belief that the exclusive development of the mind would be found sufficient to meet the real great problems of our existence. The spiritual and the temporal must grow together and be harmonious. - president joseph F. Smith in Juvenile Instructor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: April 11, 1912 Today there are some two thousand elders in the various parts of the world, preaching a re-discovery of God, together with the restoration of the everlasting gospel of Christ Jesus. They present to the people the gospel in its fulness, with the same keys, gifts, powers and blessings that characterized the true gospel of Christ during His personal ministry on the earth. They preach with authority; they have knowledge and light and power emanating from God, and because they have received freely, they are willing and glad to give freely to all men. On the other hand, the Christian world to-day are groping about in darkness, in fulfillment of the words of Amos: Behold the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread nor a thirst of water, but of hearing the word of the Lord and they shall wander from sea to sea and from the north, even to the east, they shall run to and fro and seek the word of the Lord and shall not find it. (amos 8: 11 They are seeking the word of the Lord they are calling upon Him for light and knowledge, yet they refuse to accept it from the mouths of His latter-day servants. They refuse to live up to the requirements of the truth, because it comes from an unpopular sect. They are seeking a re-discovery of God; they need more power, more light and more truth, and yet, as the elders carry what they desire to their very doors, they will not accept it, because of pre judice. They display that lack of spiritual discernment, which has made Christendom what it is, by refusing to accept truth, light and knowledge when carried to their very thresholds; They have been brought, up to believe in a Godhead which is three in one and one in three. Their minds are never permitted to broaden beyond the belief of their respective churches; their ministers preach three in one from the pulpits and in the homes, and at the same time are crying for more light from the God whom they admit is so distant, so unreal, so dimly seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: May 16, 1912 True it is recorded in John 3: 16, that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. That statement of the Savior certainly does not exclude 'the necessity of works. The use of the word believeth implies the doing of the works suggested. The man who believes in education always works for it by striving to educate himself or his children, or using his means and influence along educational lines. If he said he believed in learning, and did not exert himself in that direction, his statement could be justly doubted. There is no reason for misunderstanding what the Savior meant when He used the word believe, for He emphatically explained Himself in John 14: 12, when He said Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these Shall he do; because I go unto my Father. We are all more or less acquainted with the works of the Savior, but it should be borne in mind that, besides living a life that has set a moral example which He wished men to follow, He also obeyed the laws of the gospel which He established by going down into the waters of baptism, declaring thus it be cometh us to fulfill all righteousness. The Savior's life and teach ings plainly indicate the necessity of obedience to all His teach ings and sayings. They were given in order that man might conform his life to them, and thus prepare himself to inherit eternal life. Nowhere does the Savior justify men in selecting a few of His commandments and obeying them, and rejecting as unnecessary all the rest. He tells us, Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock. And everyone that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand. The rich young man was impressed with the necessity of complete obedience when, after telling how he had obeyed the laws from his youth up, he found that it was still required of him that he should sell all he had and follow Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: September 26, 1912 Many testimonies are given by the ancient prophets that there will be a resurrection from the dead. Not only have we the assur ance of the ancients, but also of our beloved Redeemer and His apostles. He said, I am the resurrection, and the life (john making clear the fact that it was through Him that the resurrection is brought about, and that mankind must look to Him as the Author of their salvation. On one occasion He said unto His enemies, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. (john 2: Through Him all will be raised from the grave. He redeemed fallen man with His precious blood. Through Adam's transgression all his posterity were doomed to die. It required some sinless being, upon whom death had no claim, to redeem Adam's posterity. Through his transgression death came, and through Christ we are redeemed. Jesus drank the bitter cup to the dregs. He became the first fruits of them that slept. He broke the bands of death and hell and gained a victory over the grave. Through the great sacrifice that He made He became the Author of our salvation, for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: January 18, 1912 Brother Taylor has given me some credit here, in his remarks, that I do not claim to merit, referring to a condition of which I cannot of myself boast; for I am under the necessity of acknow ledging, and I do most cheerfully acknowledge, that I owe my success so far in family life largely to those whom God has favored me with to help me care for and rear and train my children. For years together, I have been away from home on missions, leaving my little ones with their mothers; and yet, during all my absence from home, I have felt the assurance in my soul that my boys and girls were under the care, protection and guidance of faithful, true Latter-day Saints. Whatever credit may attach to me, is due largely to those whom God has given me to be my helpmates in life. I want to acknowledge it before the world, because it is true. I do not mean to say, by this, that we are without blemish, that we are perfect, that we know it all, and that we, ourselves, know just what to do and how to do it, in order to accomplish the results that we desire; but I mean to say this, that in the home where there is union, where there is love, where there is faith in God, where the father and the mother, when together, and the children are united in prayer and in sup plication to God - that there is a providence over that home that will shape the course of those that are entrusted with the training and care of that home, that will be most pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God. We must, therefore, give not only credit to our wives for their faithfulness and love of the truth, for the important part they act, for the good work they do in the sacred duty of rearing the family, and their union with their husbands in the family discipline; but we must acknowledge, where this spirit and union prevails in the hearts of the family, that the hand of God is there, and the providence of the Lord is over them and their home, and blessings will come and the right spirit and feeling will be inspired within the hearts of our children. They may be properly regarded as the discipline of life, appointed by a wise Providence, with an ulterior purpose. When we show mercy to the poor, the guilty, and the wretched, we are growing like God, one of whose great attributes is mercy. Every blessing we enjoy is a proof of this fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: July 11, 1912 The second principle of the gospel of Christ, as taught by the Latter-day Saints, is repentance. True repentance is a godly sor row for sin, For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of, but the sorrow of the world worketh death. (ii. Cor. 7 Sincere repentance will cause a man to forsake his sins and turn away from his evil ways. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
