This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: January 4, 1906 One striking evidence of the faith of the Saints is their fidelity in the pay ment of tithes, in their offerings for the poor, in the erection of substantial and elegant houses of worship, in the maintenance of missions, and the sup port given generally to all measures for the spread of the work of the Lord. Our people are gradually following the advice given to get out of debt. It is confidently hoped that the Church itself will, before long, be free from the bonded indebtedness which has been a burden upon it for some time. It will be glad tidings to us all, if by the next Christmas day we can declare, truth fully, that we owe no man anything, but to love one another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: March 15, 1906 Let me say to our young men who are here studying different branches of learning: Hunt up your friends; associate with your brethren and sisters. DO not pull away from them; do not keep yourselves aloof from them. GO to their meetings. Go to the presiding authorities and talk with them. Say to them, Here I am. If you can use me for any good, do so. If I have talent and ability to do anything you want me to do to roll on the work of the Lord and to convince the honest in heart of the truth we have received, here I am, ready to be used for the accomplishment of God's purposes whenever it is possible for me to get away from my studies. Now, boys, do this. Remem ber the Old saying, that it is not all of life to live; nor is it all of death to die. There is something more in life than the mere living - eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die. Men will be held accountable before the great Judge Of the quick and the dead for the deeds done in the flesh. You cannot avoid that. You are not here by chance. You came here by the will of God, according to His design, to fulfil His purposes; and you came here without Seeking it yourself, so far as this world is concerned. You are entities; you have living souls within you; and you will be raised' from the dead just as sure as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. As sure as by Adam you die. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: July 19, 1906 On the fact of the inspiration of the prophets and apostles of the Lord, the early fathers were unanimous, and they quoted copiously from their writings in support of their own teachings. But on the question of how God inspired them, they were not clear, and perhaps that is one reason why some of those excellent men fell into the absurd error of regarding the verses of the pagan sibyls as also divinely inspired. Though these sibyls were no better than our gipsy fortune tellers, Justin, Clement of Alexandria, Athenagoras, Theophilus of Antioch, Origin, Tertullian, and even Augustine, quote them so earnestly that the early Christians were derisively called sibyllists. Had they had a clearer appreciation of the nature of divine inspiration, they would perhaps not have fallen in this peculiar error. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: April 5, 1906 This week we present on our front page a picture of the conference house at Christiania, Norway. This house is of more than usual interest, as it is the first building of its kind which the Church owned in the European mission, and for many years the only one. The first building was erected in 1870-1. It was a three story structure, containing basement rooms, apartments to let on the first and second floors, and a large and commodious hall for meeting purposes on the third. There were also living rooms for the Elders on this floor. The building served the large and prosperous Christiania branch for about thirty years, when because of the sinking of some of the walls, it was thought best to tear it down and erect a new building. This new structure was dedicated on the 24th of July, 1903, by President Francis M. Lyman. At the services there were about one hundred and forty-five Elders from various parts of the European mission, and a most glorious time was had. Our cut represents this new building. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: January 11, 1934 It is obvious that these changed conditions should have little, if any, effect upon the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its members have always stood for temper ance, they still stand for temperance, and should unitedly use their influence for the enactment of rational laws which will hold the liquor traffic in proper restraint, that we may never return to the golden age of the bootlegger, or the intolerable conditions which preceded him. Without reserve we endorse the attitude of the President of the United States when he says: To take the life of a person without due process of law is murder. It has always been, and still continues to be a fundamental doctrine of the Church that: The murderer has not eternal life abiding in him. Notwithstanding the vexatious delays of the law, the 11n certainty of the verdict to be pronounced by judge or jury, by which violators of the law who are obviously guilty are too frequently acquitted and turned loose 011 the community, to again kill, kidnap, or rob, we admonish members of the Church to refrain from participation in acts of lawlessness, and to advise others to refrain from all association with mobs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 99: January 21, 1937 To all such parents and to their children, may we suggest a few of the many opportunities offered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Perhaps one of the most unusual features of the Church is the wide participation in all forms of activity by the individual members. There being no paid ministry, the members carry on the work themselves, and every one, young and old, has many opportunities to take part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: January 9, 1902 The Prophet's ancestors for several generations were native Americans. The humble town of Sharon, Windsor county, Vermont, witnessed his birth. There, on the 23rd day of December, 1805, came be into the world. He was but ten years Old when his parents - honest farm folk in lowly circumstances - moved with their family of seven sons and three daughters, Joseph being the fourth child, into the back-woods Of western New York; and it was in that then modest and retired corner of the world - a world that now rings with his fame, told by both good and evil tongues - that the curtain arose upon the great drama Of the latter days. When about mid-way between fourteen and fifteen years Of age, he received his first miraculous manifestation - that glorious and unspeakable appearing of the Father and the Son, which has been for so many years the theme of so many tongues and pens, of so much comment, favorable and unfavorable; to the Gentiles foolishness, and to some Latter-day Saints, skeptically inclined, a stumbling stone. It was a period of great religious excitement in the neighborhood of Joseph's home, the little village of Manchester. Revivals were ln progress, camp meetings were being held by ministers of various denominations, and it was to sol a question in his mind as to which of all the Christian churches was the true Church of Christ, that he went one spring morning into the woods near his father's home, to ask for wisdom, for spiritual light and guid ance, Of that God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, as testified James the Apostle. Goodbye 1924 Welcome 1925! We shall be the wiser and better if we make the history of the Old Year a guide to the New. TO this end we shall do well to remember the past. Only through cumulative experiences can we grow and develop in wisdom. Events Of deep significance and immeasurable importance are following one another with bewildering rapidity. We say time is flying swiftly in this age; though everybody knows that the units are just as long as they ever have been. But with many great occurrences crowded into a year, we are thoughtlessly prone to think that the time is too Short for them all. Nevertheless, it is a fact that history is being made more rapidly than in times bygone; that is to say, more Of the really great occurrences, such as shall have enduring place in recorded annals, come to pass within a given period now than aforetime.
