Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: May 5, 1904 I maintain, that it is the absolute duty of each and every member of the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints to so order his life that his ex ample will be worthy of the imitation of all men, thus bringing credit and blessings to himself and his posterity, and also making friends for the work of the Lord, which should bethe loftiest ambition of every Latter-day Saint. In line with the lesson taught in Never Despair, quoted in my last article, I desire to impress upon the minds of the young men that because they have not succeeded in the past, or have failed to live proper lives, they should never feel that there is no hope for them in the future. There is no teaching of our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, which is plainer than that laid down by Him to the effect that there will be none of our past Sins held against us, provided we repent and forsake them, in the future laboring diligently for the right. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: March 27, 1902 God, that we existed before we came here in the flesh, and that Jesus is our 'elder Brother in very deed, as He tried to make the people understand when He lived here. God is His Father and our Father, His Son and our God. He was ln the beginning with God; and by Him and through Him all things were made that were made. All things, as the Apostle says, are Of God, but they are by and through Jesus, who is the Christ. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, as the Apostle John has written. Jesus Christ declared to those who were with Him that. They were His brethren, and He was their Elder Brother. He came from God to earth, to. Mingle among them, and to perform His work; and then He returned to the Father. He tried to make it clear to the people among whom He moved, that God is the Father of the human race. Said He: When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do; for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our' Father which art in heaven. This great truth should be understood by all mankind. It seems to me that if people really understood and believed this, they would be a little kinder than they are to each other. There would be a stronger feeling Of brotherhood between men and women and between nations, if all people understood that the sons and daughters of men who swarm upon the face of this globe which our Father has made for us, are brothers and sisters in spirit, and that we all came from that Eternal Father, no matter what may be our color or condition. We dwell here on the earth for a little time, and we shall have to go'back and give an account to our Father of the manner in which we have spent that time here. He was considered to be in good health and his friends had no suspicion that his useful career was so soon to terminate. For many years he has been a counselor to President Ivins, of the Mexican colonies, and has been a bulwark of strength to the people there. His influence was also extended to the Mexican people who held him in the highest regard, both the humble natives and the government officials, so that his services were of inestimable value to his people in that land and the sense of their loss at this time will be keenly felt among them all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: March 13, 1902 We cannot emphasize too strongly the great need for strict attention to this feature of our most holy faith. By it we manifest our continued willingness to serve the Lord, and make covenant with the Father that we will keep His commandments, and do aught else that may be required at our hands for the upbuilding and advancement of His kingdom upon the earth. Knowing as they do the great importance of this ordinance, the Latter-day Saints should be, among its most firm adherents, never resting satisfied until they can par take Of the Sacrament every Sunday. It is a faith-promoting feature of our worship, and a. Renewer of blessings upon our heads that cannot come in any other way. Besides, the Lord has commanded it, and no true member of His Church can afford to disobey His word, or, in the very least, disregard His instructions. Good times ahead. - The Grimsby Conference, scheduled to take place at Hull on Sunday next, marks the firing of the first gun in a campaign which promises to be both vigorous and beneficial. It means the opening of the season's work by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which, in the British Isles, is represented by a corps of energetic young men and women as missionaries, and not a few honest-hearted souls who have become adherents to that faith. This Church preaches and teaches the pure Gospel of Jesus Christ shorn of all improvements and innovations, and declares Openly and to all the world that herein lies the salvation of humankind; that, as the Scrip tures have it, there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved than the name of our blessed Savior, Jesus Christ. While this work has been going on here for years, the spring Of the year is always the signal for renewed effort, as it gives those engaged in the ministry an opportunity of being heard on the Street corners, as well as in the halls, and paves the way for the introduction of the Gospel into many a home which otherwise might have been left without. From the present state of affairs we have great hopes for a good harvest the coming season, for the day seems fully ripe for splendid accessions to the fold, due to a reawakening through out the la'nd, and an increased desire to serve God in the appointed way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: June 19, 1902 It stands to reason that one who labors under these high convictions will be much more likely to achieve success than one into whose life's labor no such inspiring thoughts enter, and what is true of the individual in this case will be found to be true of a community. Moreover, under the foregoing ideas which have taken possession of him, the Mormon will submit to a severer self - discipline than will a man in whose life no such ideas are present. He is far advanced in the spirit of the ruling principle one sees in the life of Christ, and which is represented in the words, Father, not my will, but thine be done. He is prepared to act with his fellows in the interest of the community, even at the sacrifice of what may be personal to him. There is bound to be in the aggregation of such units a strong community sentiment, resulting in mutual helpfulness that can scarcely fail to make them successful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: September 25, 1902 The sacred volume was originally engraven upon plates of gold, principally by Mormon, a Nephite Prophet, who lived about four hundred years after the birth of the Savior. After finishing the work of his father, Moroni, the son of Mormon, hid the plates in a hill situated in that part of the country now embraced in the western part of the state of New York, near the present town of Palmyra, where the young prophet, Joseph Smith, about fourteen hundred years later, found them, as directed by the same Moroni (now a resurrected being and an angel of the Lord) who deposited them. Joseph Smith trans lated the records by the gift and power of God through the Urim and Thummim found with the plates, and the result was the Book of Mormon. The Elders meet with little or no persecution, and as a rule are treated well. They meet with fair success. A large number of books are sold among the people. The Elders emphasize the truth that God has revealed Himself anew. They feel that it is necessary to dwell on the work which God is doing to-day and not so much on what He did in past ages. They had recently got out an edition of ten thousand of the Book of Mormon. About one-half of the expense Of this work had been sustained by the Elders laboring there. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: May 29, 1902 Theologians have many ways Of explaining this vision. But this is the plain explanation the Lord himself gives, and this is not figurative language. The vision itself was figurative; this is the explanation Of the figure. The resurrection of Israel is to be just as literal as the resurrection of the Saints who came out Of their graves into Jerusalem and appeared unto many. The Apostle Paul speaks very plainly in Romans viii: 11, But if the spirit Of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken (resurrect John v: 21) your mortal bodies by his spirit that dwelleth in you. He also says, We ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption Of our body. This shows clearly that our body, as well as our spirit, is to be redeemed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: January 2, 1902 The Site for the city of Zion was pointed out by the Prophet Joseph Smith as Jackson county, Missouri, and there some of our people settled in 1831, but were subsequently driven from their homes. This event, while it delayed the building of the city, did not change the place of its location. The Latter-day Saints fully expect to return to Jackson county and build up Zion. Their exodus to the Rocky Mountains, and their sojourn in the Stakes of Zion as the places are called which they now inhabit - they regard as preparatory to that return, and as events that had to be in order to fulfil Scripture, notably these words of Isaiah: O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain. And it Shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: December 18, 1902 Joseph Smith was born at a new epoch of the world's history. The United States was but a plucky fledgling, healthy, vigorous, and ardent in hope. A new nation had just been established, a nation that declared for the first time in the world's history, religious liberty for all. Man had learned to res peot himself as man. Old World ideas were of no use in a land where the soil was new, and where nature was inviting the best that was in human nature. A big, broad country was to produce in time a big, broad people, and before many years the world was to have a great many things that men had never dreamed of before. The age of invention was about to dawn, and the hardy pioneer was forcing his way into the wilds of the far west. The ax and the pick, the plow and the horse were his best friends, and with these he was laying a wonderful foundation for future generations. The fundamental law of American life, the law that in time is to judge all religions and all men was fast being developed. With the new age, with the new people came a renewal of the Gospel of Christ. Its progress has only been in keeping with the pro gress of the age.
